Gabriel BATISTUTA: “The good thing is that there are 60 days left (for Argentina)”

16

Gabriel BATISTUTA spoke about Argentina’s recent friendly loss to Spain, the Argentina National Team, the strikers and more.

Speaking in a recent interview, the Argentina legend stated that the players chosen for his country’s World Cup squad should be picked based off of form and not the popularity of their name. An interview translated by Juan G. Arango, here’s what Gabriel BATISTUTA had to say:

Gabriel BATISTUTA on Argentina’s loss to Spain:

“I am worried that there is not a solid base in place. I hope that the coach has realized that he has 70-80 percent of the players he’s taking. What we’ve been able to see up to now is rather disconcerting, especially when it comes to the results.

“The good thing is that there are 60 days left. They will have a prudent amount of time together. They will have about 20-25 days together, working. That is a great thing.”

Gabriel BATISTUTA on the Argentina National Team:

“I think that they the Argentine footballers are great. There is a need to work in the back and there needs to be preparation prior to the World Cup. If they do, they can have a great World Cup and be in fine form.

“If I were to separate all the lines, they don’t play at a horrible level but they are not at their maximum level. I think they can all give more individually and collectively.

“What worried me most against Spain was that there was no collective, there were no ideas. There was nothing. I am hopeful that that match was just a one-off thing. It was poor preparation for a friendly match that required maximum seriousness from all.

“From the outside, it seemed to me that match vs. Spain was like, ‘This is just a commitment we have to tend to. Let’s get it over with. In the end we conceded six goals and the repercussions were huge.

“And right now, we are still stunned after what happened. Outside of that result, I don’t think that it takes us away from the expectations we have. Our expectations are lesser or greater based on that match.”

Gabriel BATISTUTA on striker partnership:

“I am convinced that I could have played with CRESPO without any problems and there would have been more positives than negatives, but that was my situation. You are asking me about HIGUAIN and AGUERO and I honestly have no idea how they get along on the pitch.

“I believe that out of it, they get along well. One thing is to be friends off the pitch, another is to understand each other on it. I also don’t know what the coach wants out of them.”

Gabriel BATISTUTA on Lautaro MARTINEZ:

“Lautaro is very good, but he might be coming to this level a little late. He is good, but he is not better than many that are on the team already. When he goes to Europe, he will learn more, he will acquire certain characteristics. There are several things that depend on him.

“It’s up to him to take advantage of the situation. We all admire him. He is a player worthy of being on the national team, I am not sure there is space for him on this team based on who else is on the squad.”

Gabriel BATISTUTA on Argentina’s forwards:

“Argentina’s forwards are like when you open your closet and you only have one shirt. That’s what you wear. When you have more money and get four shirts, you can now choose which shirt to wear. I always prefer to have four shirts.”

Gabriel BATISTUTA on Paulo DYBALA:

“I didn’t condemn Dybala for what he said, it’s something he felt. He shouldn’t have said it because it caused exactly what it did. To hear a guy say that it is difficult to play with Messi is very difficult to understand. That is difficult for anyone that didn’t play football.

“Those that did know that there are teammates that you get along with and others you don’t regardless if they want to or if they are supreme footballers. For me it was an unfortunate comment. I don’t think he’s not on the national team because of that he’s not on the team because there is not enough room for everyone. He was struggling at Juventus, but in this last period where his form improved.

“But when he was taken out of the national team it was because he deserve be there. His form was average. Even if you look at that time, Dybala was a sub. So there is little to talk about.”

Gabriel BATISTUTA on taking in form players:

“The players that should play on the national team are the ones in the best form, not the names. We are going to a World Cup that lasts a month, three weeks. We can’t play with just names. If that were the case, Maradona would still be playing.

“If it were based on names, KEMPES and FILLOL would still be playing. As far as MASCHERANO, that is something the coach has to worry about. What I can tell you is that we can’t go to the World Cup with just names. We won’t do anything if we do. If the names are in form, great. If not, let’s set up a team.”

Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI is reportedly following Santiago ASCACIBAR.

With Lucas BIGLIA being injured and out for overa month, Argentina coach Jorge SAMPAOLI is apparently following the progression of Stuttgart midfielder Santaigo ASCACIBAR. Per journalist Esteban EDUL, SAMPAOLI is monitoring the status of the German based player.

With the number of injuries slowly climbing for Argentine players, it’s good to see that the Argentina coach is keeping an eye out on some players.

Mauro ICARDI, LO CELSO, SALVIO score, PIATTI hattrick, more

It was a weekend full of goals with Mauro ICARDI, Giovani LO CELSO, Eduardo SALVIO, Lucas OCAMPOS and Ignacio PIATTI all scoring.

Mauro ICARDI just can’t stop scoring. After netting goal number 25 of the season against Cagliari, he scored once more this time in a 2-1 win against Chievo. ICARDI scored a tap in and after initially being ruled off for offside, VAR showed that D’AMBROSIO (the player who passed it to ICARDI) was not offside.

As we reported, Argentina coach Jorge SAMPAOLI was set to speak with ICARDI on Friday.

Another player fighting for his chance in Argentina’s World Cup squad, Eduardo SALVIO scored two minutes into stoppage time in Benfica’s 2-1 win against Estoril Praia. SALVIO’s Benfica are now one point ahead of FC Porto but SALVIO’s men have played one more match than their counter parts.

Giovani LO CELSO scored for PSG in their 1-0 win against Girondins de Bordeaux. LO CELSO’s goal came from the edge of the area and meant that the newly crowned Ligue 1 champions have a 20 point gap ahead of second place Monaco.

Former River Plate star Lucas OCAMPOS registered a goal and an assist in Marseille’s 5-1 win versus Lille. The win for Marseille means they are only one point behind second place Monaco and are tied on 69 points with Lyon.

Moving over to MLS in North America, Ignacio PIATTI scored three times for the Montreal Impact but it wasn’t enough as they fell to a 5-3 loss against LAFC. PIATTI scored twice in the first 16 minutes to establish a 2-0 lead and completed his first half hattrick in the 43rd minute as Montreal went into half time with a 3-1 score. However, a red card in the 31st minute meant that LAFC were able to get back in and steal the victory.

Lionel MESSI wins Copa del Rey, Leandro PAREDES scores “Olympic” goal

Lionel MESSI made history once more on Saturday as FC Barcelona won the Copa del Rey while Leandro PAREDES scored a direct goal from a corner kick.

It was an eventful Saturday for Lionel MESSI as he scored and assisted twice in FC Barcelona’s 5-0 win against Sevilla. MESSI scored goal number two of the match and assisted goals three and four while giving COUTINHO the penalty kick for goal number five.

After great link-up play between Jordi ALBA and Andres INIESTA, ALBA back heeled the ball in the area to MESSI who fired the ball into the net. MESSI then got his first assist of the match after delivering a perfect eye of the needle pass to Luis SUAREZ. MESSI’s second assist came to Andres INIESTA. Lionel could have had the chance to add a second goal to his name after the club were awarded a penalty kick but he gave it to COUTINHO to take instead.

Per Opta, MESSI is the second player in Copa del Rey history to score in five different finals. Telmo ZARRA accomplished that between 1942 and 1950 scoring eight goals.

Also an incredible piece of statistic, MESSI has now scored 40+ goals in all competitions for the 9th consecutive season.

For Sevilla, it meant another heartbreak for Ever BANEGA, Gabriel MERCADO, Joaquin CORREA, Franco VAZQUEZ and Nicolas PAREJA (who didn’t play in the final due to injury).

Moving over to Russia, Leandro PAREDES had a goal and an assist in Zenit St. Petersburg’s 3-3 draw versus Arsenal Tula. With the score 1-0 in favor of Arsenal Tula, Zenit were awarded a corner kick which was taken by PAREDES. However, to everyone’s surprise, PAREDES aimed at goal and scored directly from the corner kick!

With the latest news of Lucas BIGLIA’s injury breaking over the weekend, Leandro PAREDES could possibly have a spot in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

Lucas BIGLIA out for six weeks, World Cup spot in jeapordy

12

Lucas BIGLIA is expected to miss five to six weeks following an injury he picked up on Saturday.

AC Milan gave an update on the latest developments pertaining to Lucas BIGLIA’s condition after he was withdrawn in their match against Benevento on Saturday. It appears he has suffered a slight lumbar fracture in his back and should be sidelined for around five to six weeks.

Argentine journalist Hernan CASTILLO has earlier tweeted that with the World Cup just eight weeks away, Jorge SAMPAOLI and Dr. MARTINEZ will need to seriously assess his condition on whether he makes the cut for Russia.

If BIGLIA isn’t fit enough to the World Cup, the door for Matias KRANEVITTER is now wide open. Both SAMPAOLI and Dr. MARTINEZ are now in Europe and will only make a decision at the end of their trip.
