Independiente win Copa Sudamericana!

Hey guys, Independiente have won the Copa Sudamericana last night!

The “Rey de Copas” or the “King of Cups” deservedly won 3-2 last night on aggregate. It was their second Copa Sudamericana title.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Argentina last week and with support from more than 54,000 fans in an overflowing Maracana, Flamengo striker Lucas Paqueta opened the scoring in the 29th minute from a low cross by defender Rever. Just minutes later, a disputed penalty allowed midfielder Ezequiel BARCO to equalize.

Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan issued seven yellow cards, four of them to Independiente players, all in the last 17 minutes of regulation time. Flamengo have had to play without striker Paolo Guerrero, who has been suspended by FIFA after failing an anti-doping test.

Independiente midfielder Ezequiel BARCO said the Copa Sudamericana opens a new era for the club. They are the biggest winner of the Copa Libertadores with seven titles, but the last one was in distant 1984. No side has lifted the Sudamericana on more occasions than Independiente, though Boca Juniors have also triumphed twice, while the Avellaneda (of Buenos Aires) based club’s seven Copa Libertadores titles are unparalleled.

On their way to the title, the Sudamericana champions eliminated Argentina’s Atletico Tucuman and Paraguay’s Nacional and Libertad until they met Flamengo in the final.

Barco, one of the best players of the tournament, is leaving the club to play in MLS for Atlanta. He is likely to have played his last match for Independiente at the Maracana.

BARCO of Independiente

“I never imagined I could leave Independiente, but now all I want to do is to celebrate this title and thank fans for their support all those years.”

Franco DI SANTO and Sergio AGUERO both found the back of the net for their clubs on Tuesday night.

Schalke’s number 9 and Argentina international Franco DI SANTO scored his second goal of the season in his club’s 3-2 win against Augsburg. The win sends Schalke into second place in the German Bundesliga table. DI SANTO’s goal came on the stroke of half time in the 44th minute with a lovely back heel flick passed the goalkeeper. Per the Bundesliga’s report, this match marked DI SANTO’s 100th appearance in the Bundesliga.

As a throwback Thursday side note, Franco’s goal came in the same stadium as Argentina’s 2-1 victory against the Ivory Coast at the 2006 FIFA World Cup when Hernan CRESPO and Javier SAVIOLA netted for Argentina.

In the Premier League, Sergio AGUERO scored a goal himself in City’s 4-0 victory way to Swansea. AGUERO scored City’s fourth of the match. Manchester City maintain their lead at the top of the league. The goal takes AGUERO into third place in the Premier League goal scorers list for the season. Here are the top four:

Mohamed SALAH (Liverpool), 13 goals
Harry KANE (Tottenham), 12 goals
Sergio AGUERO (Manchester City), 10 goals
Wayne ROONEY (Everton), 9 goals

Lionel MESSI: “I hope football pays its debt to me”

18

Argentina captain Lionel MESSI spoke to FIFA.com about the World Cup, football and much more.

Lionel MESSI sat down with FIFA’s official website to discuss the disaster (which would have been) of missing out on the 2018 World Cup, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, whether football owes him and more. Here’s the full interview:

Lionel MESSI talks football with FIFA.com

Looking ahead to Russia, where are Argentina in relation to teams like Germany and Brazil?

Lionel Messi: We’ll be in good shape when we get there because we’re still growing. We had to go through something that we didn’t expect or deserve, because we had earlier matches against Venezuela and Peru that we could have won easily. If we had, then we wouldn’t have had to go through what we did at the end. We’ve had four competitive matches with a new coach, but the national team’s going to change now that the Ecuador game’s behind us. It’s going to grow and it’s going to get rid of all the tension and fear it felt because of that match and because of the risk of not achieving our objective. The national team’s going to change a lot.

Were you surprised Chile failed to qualify?

Yes, like everyone else. After all, Chile won the last two Copas America and they’re a side that’s grown used to winning. They’re a great team with very good players. But it just goes to show you how difficult the South American qualifiers are, because nobody gives you anything. It’s not easy to go and play away in Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and all the other places where you have to go, not least Brazil. There’s less and less of a gap between teams and it’s getting more and more difficult to reach the World Cup.

Have the wounds of Brazil 2014 healed?

No! I don’t know if they’re ever going to heal. We’re just going to have to live with it. It’s going to be there forever. The World Cup is a very happy memory and a bitter one too because of how it ended, how it all worked out. But it’s always going to be there.

How are you feeling now you’ve turned 30? Are you where you thought you’d be?

To tell you the truth, I never thought about how I’d be feeling when I got here. But I’m very happy with both my personal life and football. I’d say I’m in good shape on and off the pitch. I’m very pleased with where I am right now.

Lots of things change as time goes by. Has your football changed too?

Yes, of course. You grow, and as time goes by you improve as well, picking up new things along the way. As I’ve grown older I’ve grown on the pitch too.

Argentina’s national team can see that for itself. Where would you rank the qualifying match against Ecuador in your international career?

It was very important because missing out on the World Cup would have been a huge blow, firstly for the squad as a whole and then for me on a personal level. I don’t know how I would have taken it. The same goes for the people of Argentina. Failing to make Russia would have been an all-time low for the country.

Given the importance of the match, was it a performance that you think you had to give?

No, I don’t know if I had to give it. I’ve had some really good games with the national team. What I can say is that with the way things turned out it was a very important and special moment for me.

After Argentina qualified for Russia 2018, coach Jorge Sampaoli said that football owes Messi a World Cup. Did you hear that and what do you make of it?

Yes, I did hear it, and he said it to me too. I hope football does end up paying me! (laughs)

Talking of the World Cup, we have a little challenge for you. Can you complete the following sentence? In 2018, Lionel Messi will be…

(Thinks) I’ll be a father for the third time!

Nicolas OTAMENDI scores in Manchester derby

Nicolas OTAMENDI scored for Manchester City in their 2-1 win of the Manchester derby.

It was his fourth league goal of the season (fifth overall) as he scored the second goal, which proved to be decisive, for Pep GUARDIOLA’s team. OTAMENDI has scored more Premier League goals this season than any other defender. The win takes Manchester City 11 points clear in the league and away from their neighbors in red following a Premier League record of a 14th consecutive victory.
