Alejandro Garnacho scores twice for Chelsea in 3-2 loss vs. Arsenal

Alejandro Garnacho scored both goals for Chelsea in their 3–2 loss to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the EFL Cup semifinals.

Garnacho was Chelsea’s main attacking threat on the night. After Arsenal took a two-goal lead through Ben White in the 7th minute and Viktor Gyökeres shortly after halftime, the Argentine winger pulled one back in the 57th minute, finishing a quick attacking move to keep the hosts in the tie.

The game became tense as Chelsea tried to push forward, and Enzo Fernández, wearing the captain’s armband, was heavily involved in midfield battles. Following Arsenal’s third goal, scored by Martín Zubimendi in the 71st minute, Fernández showed clear anger toward the Spanish midfielder after a challenge. New head coach Liam Rosenior was seen stepping in to calm the Argentine captain.

Garnacho gave Chelsea renewed hope by scoring again late in the match, reducing the deficit to 3–2 and completing his brace.

Chelsea, captained by Enzo Fernández, will now look to overturn the result in the second leg on February 3 at the Emirates Stadium.

Franco Mastantuono scores for Real Madrid in 3-2 loss vs. Albacete

Franco Mastantuono scored for Real Madrid on Wednesday, but his goal was not enough as the team was eliminated from the Copa del Rey following a 3–2 loss to Albacete in the Round of 16. The match was also the first in charge for new head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

The Argentine winger started the match and equalized just before halftime. In the 48th minute, Mastantuono reacted quickly inside the box to finish a rebound and make it 1–1. The goal marked his second for Real Madrid and ended a scoring drought that dated back to September 2025, when he had scored against Levante shortly after joining the club.

Mastantuono was substituted in the 77th minute and watched the closing stages from the bench. After late goals at both ends, Albacete secured a 3–2 win with a stoppage-time strike, sealing Madrid’s elimination.

While the result was a setback for Arbeloa in his debut, Mastantuono’s goal provided a positive note, coming after a period with limited minutes following his early run of starts under former coach Xabi Alonso.

Enzo Fernández speaks about the 2026 World Cup and Lionel Messi

Enzo Fernández spoke about Argentina’s desire to keep winning and what it means to play alongside Lionel Messi as the national team looks ahead to the 2026 World Cup. Despite recent success, the midfielder made it clear that the group remains focused on competing at the highest level.

While fully committed to his role at Chelsea, Fernández also reflected on the mindset inside the Argentina squad. He explained that winning the World Cup in 2022 did not change the team’s standards or expectations. “Anything can happen, but we’re doing very well. We have to keep winning. What happened, happened,” he said in an interview with Por el Mundo, showing that the team continues to look forward rather than back.

Fernández stressed that the team’s strength goes beyond results. According to him, the unity within the squad has been key to Argentina’s consistency. “We’re an incredible group. From the first day I arrived, I always felt very supported. The group is united and you can feel it,” he said.

The midfielder also remembered his early days with the national team, when he joined with little international experience and just before a World Cup. “I was very young and everything was new to me. I really respect the guys because they’re incredible people,” Fernández said, pointing to how the more experienced players helped him settle in quickly.

There was also time to talk about Messi, a teammate Fernández continues to admire. Speaking naturally about the captain, he explained how special it is to share the pitch with him. “I used to play with him on PlayStation, watch his matches, and suddenly I was training with him. It’s incredible, a dream,” he said, putting into words what Messi represents to many players of his generation.

Argentina arrives at this new stage after winning the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the Copa América 2024, but Fernández made it clear that those titles are not enough to satisfy the group. With the 2026 World Cup getting closer, the message from inside the squad is clear: the team wants to keep competing, keep improving, and keep winning.
