Argentina Team of the Year 2025: the starting XI based on club and National Team form

2

Based on their performances throughout 2025 at both club and international level, Roy Nemer and Osvaldo Godoy of Mundo Albiceleste selected an Argentina National Team Best XI that reflects form, consistency, and impact rather than reputation alone. The team is set up in a traditional 4-4-2 formation and includes a mix of established leaders and players who stood out over the calendar year.

In goal, the choice is Agustín Rossi, whose season with Flamengo was one of the strongest among Argentine goalkeepers. Rossi played a key role in Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores triumph and delivered several decisive performances in high-stakes matches. While Emiliano Martínez remains the undisputed starter for Argentina, Rossi’s 2025 form at club level earned him this selection.

The back line begins on the left with Nicolás Tagliafico, who continued to provide reliability and consistency with Lyon and the national team. His tactical discipline and experience made him the clear choice at left back. At center back, Leonardo Balerdi was selected after a strong year as captain of Marseille, where he established himself as a defensive leader while also earning more minutes with Argentina during periods of rotation and injuries. Alongside him is Cristian Romero, whose level remained elite throughout 2025. Romero continued to perform at a high standard for Tottenham and Argentina, reinforcing his status as one of the country’s most dependable defenders.

At right back, the selection is Agustín Giay, who impressed with Palmeiras in Brazil. Despite strong competition historically at the position, Giay stood out due to the inconsistent seasons of other options. His regular involvement in key matches and steady performances earned him a place in the XI.

The midfield reflects the depth Argentina enjoyed in 2025. Sitting deeper is Alexis Mac Allister, who enjoyed another successful year with Liverpool, winning the Premier League and maintaining his importance under Lionel Scaloni. His balance, passing, and positional intelligence made him the most consistent option in that role. To his right is Enzo Fernández, arguably the most in-form Argentine midfielder of the year. Fernández was a central figure for Chelsea, wore the captain’s armband on several occasions, and delivered strong performances with Argentina, confirming his status as a midfield cornerstone.

On the opposite side, Valentín Barco was chosen for his evolution into a midfield role. Barco had a standout year with Strasbourg, contributing assists, creativity, and versatility, and becoming one of the most influential players in his team’s rise in Ligue 1. Operating ahead of the midfield line is Nico Paz, who continued to grow in importance at club level and added goals to his game. His intelligence in the final third and increasing involvement with the national team made him one of the most promising Argentine players of 2025.

Up front, no Argentine Best XI would be complete without Lionel Messi. Messi continued to make a decisive impact with Inter Miami, contributing goals, assists, and leadership, while also remaining influential with Argentina. Even in a different league environment, his level throughout the year justified his inclusion once again.

Partnering him is Julián Álvarez, who enjoyed a productive season with Atlético Madrid. Álvarez’s versatility, work rate, and ability to score and assist in different contexts gave him the edge over other attacking options. His performances for Argentina, including in high-profile matches, reinforced his standing as one of the country’s most complete forwards.

Several notable names narrowly missed out on the XI, highlighting Argentina’s depth in 2025. Players such as Lautaro Martínez, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, Rodrigo De Paul, Paulo Dybala, and Franco Mastantuono all had strong moments across the year, but competition for places was intense. The selection reflects a snapshot of form rather than a projection for future tournaments.

AFA to exclude from youth national teams players who leave Argentina before turning professional

The recent case of Luca Scarlato, who left River Plate without signing a professional contract to move abroad under the legal mechanism of “patria potestad,” has led the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to implement a new restriction affecting youth national teams. Under Argentine law, this mechanism allows minors to leave their clubs with parental authorization before signing a professional contract. According to the federation, players who choose this route will no longer be considered for call-ups to Argentina’s youth selections, with the stated goal of protecting the investment made by domestic clubs in player development.

The decision applies to all youth players who leave Argentine clubs using this legal framework. Javier Méndez Cartier, president of Excursionistas and an AFA official involved with the Under-20 and Under-23 teams, explained that the measure was approved by AFA president Claudio Tapia together with the Executive Committee. He stated that defending the interests of training clubs is a priority and that players who leave in this manner will not be eligible for youth national teams.

AFA officials argue that youth development involves long-term investment beyond football training, including education, housing, medical care, nutrition, and social support. When a player departs before signing a professional deal, clubs lose both a potential first-team player and any possibility of recovering their investment.

In Scarlato’s case, River Plate confirmed that it contacted European clubs to which the player had been offered, requesting that no transfer be completed. Among them, AC Milan formally informed River that it would not pursue the signing, a position also adopted by AS Roma and several other European clubs.

The federation’s stance is not unprecedented. In September 2025, Ian Subiabre was advised that participation in the Under-20 World Cup would depend on finalizing his professional contract with River Plate. After reaching an agreement, he went on to represent Argentina in the tournament.

According to official information, the restriction will come into effect in upcoming youth national team cycles and will apply to all players who leave Argentine clubs through this legal mechanism.

River Plate youth football coordinator Gabriel Rodríguez confirmed that Scarlato, 16, would leave the club after failing to agree on his first professional contract. A regular youth international and captain of his age group, Scarlato is expected to continue his career in Italy, with initial interest reported from Parma and previous contact with Inter.

Rodríguez described the situation as part of a growing trend in which European clubs recruit Argentine talents before they reach adulthood. He added that negotiations with Scarlato’s family had been ongoing for several months, including direct involvement from club president Jorge Brito, but ultimately did not result in an agreement.

Scarlato captained River’s youth teams for four consecutive years and was part of the squad that won the UC Under-16 Cup in Chile. His departure adds to a list of young players leaving Argentine academies, as the AFA seeks to reinforce protections for domestic player development through new regulatory measures.

Enzo Fernández scores, Alejandro Garnacho assists for Chelsea in 2-2 draw vs. Bournemouth

Enzo Fernández was on the scoresheet as Chelsea FC drew 2–2 at home against AFC Bournemouth on Matchday 19 of the Premier League.

The Argentine midfielder found the net after receiving an assist from Alejandro Garnacho, completing a move that ended with a precise finish inside the box.

For Bournemouth, Argentine center back Marcos Senesi was named in the starting lineup and completed the match in defense, continuing his regular role in the Premier League side.

With this result, Chelsea reached 30 points and sit fifth in the league standings. Bournemouth remain 15th with 23 points after 19 matches.

River Plate, Roma and Lyon interested in Benjamín Domínguez of Bologna

River Plate, AS Roma and Olympique Lyon are all interested in Argentine winger Benjamín Domínguez, per reports. The 22-year-old, who currently plays for Bologna, has re-emerged as an option as River look for attacking options ahead of the 2026 season.

River’s board, led by Stefano Di Carlo, is searching for a winger at the request of head coach Marcelo Gallardo. While Santino Andino from Godoy Cruz remains the main target, negotiations have become difficult after a change in the player’s representation and a push for a move to Europe. Because of this situation, River have started to explore other alternatives.

Domínguez is not a new name for River. The club showed interest in him during his time at Gimnasia, but a deal did not move forward in 2024 due to financial demands. His current situation in Italy has reopened the door for a possible transfer.

Although Domínguez was called up to the Argentina national team by Lionel Scaloni earlier this year, he has struggled for playing time at Bologna. His lack of regular minutes has limited his continuity, which could make a move possible in the coming months.

River will face competition from Roma and Lyon, both of whom are also following the player’s situation. The Argentine club hopes to resolve the winger position before the start of 2026 so the coaching staff can plan the preseason with clarity. Any deal will likely depend on Domínguez’s desire to leave Europe in search of more consistent playing time.

Nicolás Otamendi scores for Benfica in 2-2 draw vs. Sporting Braga

Nicolás Otamendi scored for Benfica in a 2–2 draw away to Sporting Braga in the Primeira Liga. The Argentine center back opened the scoring in the 29th minute at the Estádio Municipal de Braga, rising inside the box to head home from a free kick delivery by Georgiy Sudakov and give his team the early lead.

The match later finished level, with the result leaving Benfica in third place in the standings with 36 points after 16 rounds. Leaders Porto (43 points) and second-placed Sporting Lisboa (38) could extend their advantage at the top by the end of the round. Sporting Braga remain fifth with 26 points, behind Gil Vicente, who have 27 despite a recent winless run.

Approaching his 38th birthday, Otamendi continues to be a regular contributor for Benfica. The World Cup winner with Argentina in Qatar 2022 has recorded four goals and four assists in 33 appearances across all competitions this season, including the Club World Cup. Since joining the club in 2020, the former Vélez, Porto, Atlético Mineiro, Valencia and Manchester City defender has surpassed 250 appearances and lifted four trophies, establishing himself as one of the leaders of the squad.

Otamendi is also the captain and a key figure for Benfica under head coach José Mourinho, who recently addressed speculation about the defender’s future amid reports linking him with Barcelona. “I have a great relationship with him. We haven’t spoken about any possible departure and there is nothing to worry about,” Mourinho said.

The coach has repeatedly highlighted Otamendi’s experience and influence. “He is a world champion and has a lot of experience,” Mourinho noted, adding: “One thing is real age and another is what we see on the pitch, even in training. There are 20-year-old players who are already veterans, and players of 38 or 40 who are young. Nico is young.” Mourinho has also expressed his desire for Otamendi to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the current season.
