Emiliano Martínez: “We will play against Brazil as we did against Peru and Bolivia”

Emiliano Martínez spoke about Argentina’s 1-0 win against Uruguay in the World Cup qualifiers and the match against Brazil on Tuesday.

Martínez reached 50 matches and 36 clean sheets with the Argentina national team in the World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay. The Argentine spoke to the media after the match. Here is what he had to say:

“The pitch did not help either for us or for them, it was a very difficult match. They were intense and so were we, and that’s why we were able to pull the game out.

“Whoever plays we always have the same mentality, this group wants to continue to grow and achieve things. We are proud of this moment.

“We will play against Brazil as we did against Peru and Bolivia, with the same respect and responsibility as always.”

  1. Whew! Now *that* was a hard fought match, a match that got better and better as the 2nd half wore off.
I have to say that I was (pleasantly) surprised with Scaloni’s selection, I wanted to see Almada on the left side and I got my wish and the kid did not disappoint (what a golazo that was!).
The defense handled itself quite well and managed to reduce Uruguay’s attempts to (mostly) half chances.
The team overall played their heart out and won a difficult away game against an ancient adversary (who beat them last year) and are now in a very good spot in the standings. In addition some of the younger gen like Almada and Simeone got chance to start and both acquitted themselves rather well, the former with a golazo and the latter with tireless effort and a nice through ball to Mac in the 2nd half, which was sadly a bit too tight for Alexis.

Btw I got to see 40 mins from the senior B squad vs U20 squad and it was kind of enjoyable. I have to say that even though the senior squad was mostly in control (unsurprisingly) the U20 boys had few spells where their passing and overall game was superior to that of the senior squad, so one must say kudos to Placente for the excellent job he’s been doing with the Jrs and hopefully it will translate into success in the U20 world cup because it’s been a hella long while since an U20 Argentina team have performed to an acceptable standard, let alone win the cup itself.

  2. Well said, Emi. In the Conmebol qualifiers no body knows which team would sting which team and when. Otherwise, we would have easily won against Paraguay. But we didn’t. Brazil match would be as intense as any other. If De Paul returns who would be replace? Paredes played his heart out and shut the doors for the pressing Uruguay. Other than a widely off-target shot he played a solid game. Almada was good. So was MacAllister. Enzo and Simeone did not have a great game, but they played their part in the overall strategy.
