Lionel Messi becomes all time leading goal scorer at World Cup

Lionel Messi is the all time leading goal scorer at the World Cup.

Messi scored three goals against Algeria and two goals for Argentina against Austria to make it 18 goals at a World Cup, the most for any player. The 38 year old had one goal in 2006, four goals in 2014, one goal in 2018, seven goals in 2022 and has five at this World Cup in two matches.

  1. Great to see the great man taking him to towering heights. But I’m concerned about others not converting chances into goals. Knockouts will not play out like this. We cannot just hope Messi would do something about it. Of course Messi will be a big factor in the equation. But we have been there in 2010, 2014, 2018. We need someone else to be on the scoresheet like alvarez, enza, macca did in 22.

  2. My Thoughts on Today’s Match: Argentina vs. Austria

Argentina secured a 2-0 win over Austria, but the performance raised serious concerns.

Austria’s height advantage (winning 62% of aerial duels) and relentless pressing consistently disrupted Argentina’s buildup, forcing Dibu Martínez into four saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Scaloni responded by slowing the tempo and congesting central areas to break Austria’s momentum, but this came at the cost of attacking fluency…Argentina created just 1.2 xG and failed to score from open play aside from Messi’s individual brilliance, with Lautaro Martínez (0 shots on target, 2/9 duels won) and Thiago Almada (38% duels won, 11 possessions lost) proving largely ineffective.

The late introductions of Nico González and Julián Álvarez arrived too late to change the game’s rhythm, while Cristian Romero’s knee injury in the same area that ended his Premier League season…looms as a major worry, potentially forcing 36-year-old Nicolás Otamendi into a starting role.

Ultimately, Argentina must “pull their socks up” urgently; the clean sheet and three points are valuable, but their over-reliance on Messi, physical frailties, and now Romero’s fitness concerns leave serious questions about their knockout-stage readiness against taller, more clinical sides like France or England.

    • Mostly agree. Overall, not a convincing performance at all and so many weak points are visible that any capable opponent will capitalize on. Passing is still not sharp and creative enough. We don’t produce any threats from wings. Defense looks shaky. Midfield is playing well but still X-factor is missing. Really concerned that none other than Messi could pose any goal-scoring threats at all; whenever they got a chance, missed it painfully.

  3. When Messi missed the penalty, the Pendulum fans were celebrating and jumping with joy. But after he scored 2 goals, they’re probably thinking the penalty miss was actually a blessing. Otherwise, a back-to-back hat-trick might have sent them straight into a coma!😂😂
