Lanús defeated Flamengo 3–2 at the Maracanã to win the 2026 Recopa Sudamericana, completing a comeback in extra time and securing the club’s first title in the competition. The Argentine side closed the series with a 4–2 aggregate victory after a hard-fought final played under heavy rain in Rio de Janeiro.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s team took the lead after a mistake by Argentine goalkeeper Agustín Rossi allowed striker Rodrigo Castillo to score the opening goal. Flamengo responded quickly and controlled large parts of the match, equalizing through two penalties converted by Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Jorginho, sending the game into extra time.
Despite the physical effort and difficult conditions, Lanús found the decisive moments late in the match. Defender José Canale Domínguez scored with a header in the 118th minute to give the visitors hope, and shortly after, substitute Dylan Aquino finished a counterattack by dribbling past the goalkeeper to score the winning goal.
After the final whistle, captain Carlos Izquierdoz spoke about the achievement. “I can’t run anymore. I’m 37 years old, don’t make me run again,” he said with a smile. He then added: “We wanted to lift the trophy at the Maracanã. Today we made history.”
Castillo, who scored on his birthday and in both legs of the series, highlighted the importance of the win. “It’s a birthday I’ll never forget. We made history. They have a great squad, but we showed again that we like these matches,” the striker said.
Canale also pointed to the team’s unity as the key factor. “It’s because of the group. We’re not afraid of anyone,” he explained, adding that scoring at the Maracanã had been a dream since childhood.
Lanús lifted its fourth international trophy and once again defeated a Brazilian team in a continental final
