Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni announced his team for the World Cup and there are nine players with a chance to make it that have been cut.
Marcos Senesi of Bournemouth and Emiliano Buendía of Aston Villa both did not make the Argentina national team for the World Cup. Marcos Acuña, who won the World Cup in 2022 does not make it because of fitness issues.
Franco Mastantuono of Real Madrid, Gianluca Prestianni of Benfica, Matías Soulé of AS Roma, Agustín Giay of Palmeiras, Máximo Perrone of Como and Nicolás Capaldo of Hamburger SV also did not make the World Cup.
This one is no exception, and there are some things about this squad I like, and some I absolutely hate. Here are my thoughts…..
There are three players i don’t like such as overreted Taglafico.Montiel and lopez..i dont think they will play wel in upcoming world cup.. those guys dont desarve this team..
Not happy with the team Messi selected. It can’t have been Scaloni, he surely wouldn’t have picked Almada over Buendia and Medina(!!!) over Senesi. Not feeling optimistic…
Scaloni has rolled the dice & loyalty/ team chemistry is the theme as expected from him. Finally if Flaco gets a couple of xtra time header goals, GLC does another knockout round assist , Medina controls some of the world’s best wingers & Montiel scores another pressure penalty, this can be hailed as a masterstroke selection! Btw i have not seen a single WC in last 3+ decades where 3-4 spots are always a debate. So nothing new this time.
Senesi misses as coach decides on an extra attacker. The positive is that it is an indicator that the backline injuries are looking manageable. GLC over Buendia is very unfortunate. But it is what it is & the role is anyway a substitute role. Maybe GLC after missing last WC will come out with some strong cameos & stay fit throughout tournament.
The key now is how does Messi, Dibu, Romero, Molina, Montiel, Almada, Paz, NicoG arrive at WC by being 100% fit. Excited to see Barco , Flaco, Medina play in the friendlies.
Dropping senesi from squad is sad but his performance with arg is not that good. We cant trust him in big match , not solid every time. As a team player he might be a risk compared to balerdi. Balerdi shows more understanding with team.
Medina case i think we don’t have any left footed experienced left back than tagliafico.
Lo celso – I believe in him, he knows the team very well. Can make unpredictable through passes which others in arg player cant see. Brilliant connection with messi . Rely as defensively and creative midfield. Can be a brilliant sub.
Buendia was brilliant this season but I think he took too much time to do his best performance and settle in aston villa after norwich city brilliant season long way back. Better not take risk.
Otamendi is brilliant player still we cantrust h relay on.no doubt about that, still playing in top ,No mistake good on ball , experience ota will give a energy to l martinez or cuti in back line.
Palacios- perfect for our team style . The percentage of leverkusen wins or draws when he plays is high.
Perrone was also brilliant this season same como we could have try but physicaly palacios superior.
I trust scaloni and the coaching staff, they work as a team , their decision and scouting style of players have certain kind of traits and characteristics.So
If they took certain players in a team means they have a plan, trust the coach
ing staffs and scaloni.
What about Montiel?
Montel had a good season except his injuries, back and forth movement is better than giay , more experience.
Giay is risk, when i watched his matches he take too much risk in attacking and defensively as a player . If we have no montiel we can try capaldo or giay.
His physical is good but control over the ball and understanding i doubt for now.
I’m overall satisfied with this squad except 2 spots.
1)GLC : Buendia is better option than GLC because of current form. Moreover Buendia can play in wings and we lack left winger. Most importantly Buendia don’t have fitness issues like GLC.
2)Montiel : I understand Foyth is injured but I still believe we have better player Montiel. Even Augustin giay is better option. Most importantly Montiel have fitness issues currently.
Otherwise I’m convinced.
The world cup is upon us and I hope all the old Mundo members come back with their opinions and we have a lot of discussions in the coming weeks. This is probably the first time I will be a little less tensed while watching Argentina play, as we have won all in the recent past. But I think if we start well , there is a possibility to go deep. Just hoping, everyone arrives at their full fitness at the start of the wc and lets enjoy this champion team fight for it one more time.
Me too, I will be watching this World Cup without too much pressure. Insha Allah
Before people come here crying with all the negativity and saying we should have taken the u17 team to the world cup 😄, let me say.. its a good balanced squad. Again, the best players do not make the best squad, but the best combinations do. Case in point, Lo celso and Messi. They understand each other and Lo celso if fit, is a very smart player for 60 mins especially in the NT jersey. Also as mentioned by Soumya, the average age is perfect for this squad. A lot of the squad are familiar with each others play and the connections would be really imp on and off the field.
Having said that, the only change I would have liked is Buendia instead of Flaco lopez. I really like Senesi but we know that the coaching staff was preparing Medina as the backup for Tagliafico for a long time..and thats why he was picked up over Senesi.

And Locelso is in? Locelso being injured is one of the reasons we won the last cup. The guy is an omen, and I’m hope I’m wrong. I hope lo celso does well, but I’m not convinced …he doesn’t gel with our style. He has had a few good games with us. Again I hope I’m wrong.
I would rather have Mastantuano- not much of a year either but I can say same about lo celso. Mastan at least is young and has something to prove.
I can’t criticize scaloni as he knows best, but I think we need one more defender and we have him in SENESI.
Lol… Otamendi over Senesi, GLC RDP over Buendia??? Personal relationship had to overcome playing skills and current forms…
Kindly asking a few questions- have you actually seen Senesi’ performance in Argetine jersey? Otamendi was never a doubt he is one of the first names that comes in the defence of the team and based on his last season performance as well. RDP was never a doubt but I would have loved to see someone else in place of GLC but I can understand the choice as he plays well for Argentina and adds some creativity in the squad. Buendia would have been good but how many appearance does Buendia have for Argentina? He has been very good for club but national team and club is not always same.
How many appearances had Enzo Fernandez made for Argentina before being selected? Talking of Senesi, you are judging him on one game. What about Balerdi vs Ecuador? You forgot how bad Macalister performed during qualifiers only to prove everyone wrong. Stop contradicting yourself.
