Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni on team, Lionel Messi, Switzerland at World Cup

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about the team, Lionel Messi and Switzerland at the World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni spoke at a press conference where he commented on people wanting Argentina to lose and the match against Egypt. At the same press conference, Scaloni spoke about the team. Here is what he had to say:

“I think we’re doing well, beyond the match against Cabo Verde, where we played 120 minutes. But the team generated a ton of chances. With Egypt, we created even more and had some specific errors. But I think the team is doing well.

“For all of us, they’re playing one of the games of their lives and that counts because if the opponent plays well, it’s twice as difficult. We’ve gotten used to that and the team rebels and competes. It’s not easy to play the way we played in Qatar.

“Lautaro and Julián have done more than they have to do. Generally one plays but like the other day, it can happen that we have the option for them to play together sometimes. The assessment is positive with both.”

Scaloni also spoke about Lionel Messi:

“Leo runs about the same in the matches. He’s decisive and the team helps him. He’s done a great preparation and he’s giving everything he’s got. When he senses that he can create danger, he’s a machine. It doesn’t surprise us.

“As long as he wants to, he’s going to be the best. That’s what those of us who know him and see him train think. I don’t even want to imagine what it must have been like for him at 23-24 years old at Barcelona. It doesn’t surprise me.”

He also spoke about Switzerland:

“There is no easy opponent, we all already know that. Switzerland is a very good team that competes with the best national teams and comes out on top. It has a World Cup tradition and experienced players. It will be a tough opponent, one we respect.”

  1. Very excited to watch ARG play yet another WC game and hopefully not the last.
This is the knock out stage and anything is possible because nothing is for certain, including the winner between Spain and France.
Great news about tonight’s game is that it’s going to be played at night in a stadium where they won their first game, no sun beaming down on them like we have other nations play under.

and damnit, AS ALWAYS, LET’S GO ARGENTINA ….LET’S GO

  2. The biggest positive from the last match is the comeback. A result like that can do wonders for a team’s confidence, and confidence is exactly what Argentina needs right now!!

Colombia aren’t the tallest team at the World Cup, yet the Swiss still needed a penalty shootout to eliminate them. That shows just being tall isn’t enough.

Argentina’s biggest issues obviously have been the lack of width and the inability to control possession. As a result, opponents are enjoying far too much time on the ball. They are able to
string multiple passes together and run through our painfully slow midfield like a hot knife through butter, carrying the ball entire length of the pitch into our defensive third where they meet our defenders with poor positional awareness exposing our statue goalkeeper.

If Argentina can stop opponents from stringing multiple passes together and prevent those direct runs through midfield, we will control the game because I have no doubt we will create more chances than the swiss team.

If Scaloni sticks with the same formation, Messi will drift wider to the right often to provide more width and creativity. Tagliafico was far better in creating chances than Medina even with his limited offensive skills from left. Team management’s number one priority should be stopping teams from playing through our midfield. Scoring first is important too, of course, but controlling the game by keeping possession of the ball has to come first. Otherwise opponent’s will keep coming back like Cape Verde! In football, the team that makes fewer mistakes and forces the opposition into making more usually wins!

  3. Hopefully, Scaloni gets the combination right somehow. Usually, opponents like Switzerland would be considered an easy quarterfinal opponent in the World Cup, but the way we’re playing makes it difficult to consider us favourites against anyone. As of now, France, Spain, and England are the favourites.

Is that good for us? In a way, yes, because we can play under the radar. It’s better to be seen as the underdog.

So Spain and France are going to muscle it out. One team that can suffocate the life out of France is Spain. They’ve done it recently too. If they can knock France out, that would be really cool.

As for us, we have bigger headaches like England, Switzerland, or even Norway to get past. Let’s hope for the best.

For some reason, Spain’s matches are kind of snoozefests, man. They’re such a boring team. Even with great players, they still play their usual boring style. They don’t even try to shoot at goal, even when they’re inside the box. Finally, they did—and they scored too.

    • After Saudi and Australia match..nobody told we were favourite to win 2022.

      Something happening..this time also…

Match by match we will improve…

Our best tactics and player selection will be in final…!

I am confident..we will beat Switzerland and Norway/England…

      2026 WC trophy is just 3 matches..away..!

    • Argentina won all the matches they played in this world cup…

Scaloni is the world’s best coach in WC averaging 2.73 points per match…

And we outplayed France in 2022 completely..even though the scoreline won’t show that…

  5. In other news, there looks to be links between Matias Soule moving from Roma to either Sunderland or Fulham.

Quite left field if we’re gonna be honest. I’m not entirely sure on how well Alvaro Arbeloa is as a coach. Fulham last season finished 11th so were pretty much firmly midtable, though they do have some nice talents in there: Jimenez, Smith Rowe, King, Robinson, Bassey, Diop, Berge, Kevin etc. They signed Oscar Bobb from Man City so he’d have to compete with him for minutes.

Sunderland finished 7th and have European football and their RW I believe is Trai Hume so would be easier for him to slot into their XI if need be.

      • Yeah seen he’s tryna bring Franco on a loan with Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia on permanent deals. He did decent with what he had at Real Madrid – showed a fair bit of tactical nous in their game against Man City earlier in the season too.

But I view Mastantuono as a #10 tbh and they’ve already got Josh King and Emile Smith-Rowe for that position. Would it be a smart move for him? Idk. He’s not a winger so I wouldn’t shift him to the right like he did at Real Madrid.

  6. Scaloni I believe is well aware that we have pretty mid wingers and that none of them have developed enough to warrant replacing Di Maria and including wingers in the lineup – Giuliano Simeone and Nico Gonzalez are pretty mid in the grand scheme of things.

(Let’s not talk about Matias Soule – travesty he was never given a fair chance at least)

So he’s tryna maximise what we’re good at – that is playing with the ball. His idea is that we dominate the ball and keeping the distances between our players short so we can quickly press immediately after losing the ball. Our physicality and athleticism amongst the best Argentinian footballers has fallen off a cliff since 2022. Age in the form of De Paul who has the most legs in this team (and he will continue starting no doubt because of that), Enzo bulking up since going to the Prem and Mac Allister just being physically shot under Slot. As a result, in terms of pressing, generally we are worse off and Scaloni has recognised that in past reports – yet we are still very strong in the counterpress immediately after losing the ball. Extensive periods of pressing is a weakness. As a result, Scaloni is trying to maximise our counterpress. For that he has to keep the distances between our players short so we can easily lock onto the opposition after losing the ball without having to cover large distances with our slower legs.

Wingers mean there’s larger gaps between our players which is why Scaloni hasn’t opted for it. No winger has been deemed good enough to sacrifice our counterpress – which is fair enough. I’d rather see that than have to rely on Giuliano Simeone to beat a full back 1v1 or watch Nico Gonzalez fluff his lines. Keep them as outlets for the end of the game to run into space if necessary.

We just need 1 change to improve this lineup under Scaloni’s system and that’s Nico Paz for Alexis. Paredes is better at dictating play than Enzo so he stays. Barco could do Paredes’s role of passing between the lines while offering a bit more dynamism but Paredes has the longer legs so can cover ground better. I’m PRAYING Scaloni doesn’t go all in on the same lineup because his words were saying that he COULD make a change but he also COULD keep the starting lineup. He’s not dead set nor decided yet. I’m praying he leans towards the one change of bringing Paz in.

    • He wont say in press
So even if change is there everyone will know it during the official lineup before the game
I dont know whether giu simeone is too mid, he is the only argentine player in Atm who was consistent and improved
But maybe he is average for scaloni

      • Yh I do hope Scaloni is keeping a tight lid on things. It’s very good he didn’t confirm anything. Even Gaston Edul said he’s not sure about what he will end up picking. I hope he stays tight lipped but falls into swapping Mac Allister out for Paz.

Giuliano Simeone is a VERY hard worker, great runner and presses the hell out of the opposition. So he’s a very useful tool, especially if you need someone to run into space and behind the opposition.

As a traditional winger though… I keep saying this but in the 3 years I’ve been watching him I have never seen him beat a full back 1v1 with the ball at this feet lol. It’s not his game. His frame is just too wide so he’s not particularly agile and because he’s a little small full backs can easily overpower him so he’s pretty limited in that sense.

As a defensive winger though, he’s the best in the world without a doubt. He runs and recovers the ball, hounding the opposition better than anyone else.

You kinda want him more so for the end of the games when there’s more space to run into. I was kinda hoping to see something similar to the goal he scored against Honduras more often where we had a lovely passing move and Simeone finished it off, so there’s some utility there if needed. But in terms of dribbling and beating his man, Simeone leaves much to be desired.

  7. I think we are getting carried away too. We haven’t faced any lesser team than the one we are supposed to face. they qualified for RO32/16 because they deserved it. This tournament had small teams giving big teams a run even for a short phase in every single match.

Of course we would have liked a better dominant win. Some momentary lapses resulted in goals conceded for us. I am hopeful that we will play two more matches.

    • I’m not sure about momentary lapses. We had weaknesses exploited if anything. Lisandro’s box defending isn’t his best attribute by any means and that was shown in the first goal we conceded.

The second goal came because we kept pushing more people up to attack and left our defence light because we were chasing the game. Because we kept committing more men forward (FBs pushed high and Lisandro stepping into midfield) we were sometimes only leaving Cuti and Paredes back to defend which pacier teams would exploit. We’re known for being weak in defensive transition and out wide anyway, so it didn’t help the fact we were chasing. It’s fine given the nature of the game and how Scaloni took that gamble of unbalancing the team as a whole just to attack and chase goals.

We need to dominate the ball and score first from here on out. Giving it up exposes us.

  8. Lionel scaloni is bullshit manger. He world cup won was a fluke, all of Argentina 3 wc is scandal.1978 they use general power,1986 handball,2022 penalty. Bye bye Argentina hahahhaha, they gonna out of the world cup tomorrow, bye bye hahahhaha

    • I like , when people said argentina are underdogs, we just enjoy messi playing football, argentina already won in 2022, so no worries just enjoy, we are happy with whatever result, and for u my friend, please watch football properly, not in social media, you are fear, and coward person, who don’t accept reality, cry hard argentina achieved everything, we don’t care, i believe that last 13 min., change everything, also mindset of argentina squad and scaloni,

  9. Scaloni is too obsessed with his friends eleven….I mean come on man it is high time to see wing play from the beginning not after going down 2 nil….At least start nico gonzalez from the beginning to force opposition defenders to guard their left side and getting free roaming spaces in the middle for MESSI

  10. I completely understand the pride in how this group rallied to produce something extraordinary in the final 15 minutes. That fighting spirit is one of the hallmarks of this Argentina side.

But tournaments are rarely won by relying on extraordinary last-quarter comebacks. They are won by controlling games long before they reach that stage.

Think back to 2022. We controlled Australia for over 80 minutes. We dictated large phases of that nerve-wracking quarter-final against the Netherlands. Croatia barely laid a glove on us for 90 minutes. Even in the final, we were the better side for around 80 minutes before the game suddenly exploded.

This time, however, it feels as though we are constantly chasing control instead of imposing it. Every match becomes a rescue mission rather than a demonstration of authority.

If Scaloni believes this is the level of football we should be satisfied with, then I hope he is also studying how France and Spain are approaching this tournament. Their defensive organization begins high up the pitch, not just inside their own box. They close passing lanes in microseconds, recover possession almost instantly, and press relentlessly as a collective.

Argentina undoubtedly have the character to survive difficult moments. The question is whether we can rediscover the control that made us champions. Character wins matches; control wins tournaments.

    • Very good post. You hit the point. The reason we have less confidence this time is because of lack of control on the proceedings. We are reacting and heroics are saving us. To some extent a lot of luck too. We are not the main protagonists of the game. We are the reactors. This luck or last minute heroics are going to run away at some point.

    • I’ve always felt for the last 4 years Scaloni was channeling how Joachim Low managed the German NT in the lead up to the 2018 World Cup. Kept largely the same core and did a poor job of incorporating youth because the German youth coming through at the time weren’t really bonafide (similar to the Argentina situation and how the young players emerged without really being of the highest quality)

  11. Why scaloni is so stubborn ,has the success got on his head?
Anyone can find out we lack width on the pitch , it’s easy to defend in the crowded central area for the opponent , even against Egypt we started making clear chances when Messi drifted wide on the right side. Plz start Simeone ,he is the best winger we have 🙏

        • Haha sampaoli. Scaloni is a decent coach and his tactics vary per opponent.Basic structure remains the same with a couple of changes as per the situation of the game. When we were under that baldy sampaoli we were highly clueless. But now ,though we may sound outplayed the fighting spirit to win the game is unparable.Irrespective of the opponent, did any champion team made a comeback after a 2 goal deficit which Argentina did. So,Argentina is playing as a system and many of the fans here may not like that but that’s the way it is played now.We will definitely improve in the upcoming matches.A couple of tweaks here and there should bring great results.

      • If won’t happen any time soon as the verbal contract stays alive till 2030.He may be changed after the next world cup .What about us winning a hattrick of world cups 😎💪 and then both lionel’s retiring😇

        • Yeah. Post Messi, I woukd rely on this group of coaches to bring in the changes to the national team. Placente, Aimar all of them know the player from u17 and u20, they know tge strength and weakness of each young talent.
