Lionel Messi wins Pichichi award with Barcelona, beats previous record

With his 25 goals this season in La Liga, Lionel Messi has won the Pichichi trophy for the most goals in the league, beating the previous record.

Lionel Messi continues to win awards. At the age 33, there’s no individual award the Argentine hasn’t won. Finishing the season with a league high 21 assists wasn’t enough for Messi.

Following his two goal performance for Barcelona on Saturday, that tally brought him up to 25 goals and with no games remaining in the league, Messi finished as the leading scorer for a record 7th time.

Messi has now won the award for a 4th time in a row and has surpassed Telmo Zarra as the player with the most Pichichi awards in history.

West Ham United being linked with Gonzalo Montiel of River Plate

Argentina and River Plate defender Gonzalo Montiel is being linked once more with a move to West Ham United.

London could be calling for the River Plate right back as West Ham are reportedly back in the running to sign him. Per a report by TyC Sports, West Ham would be willing to offer $10 million for the player which would be half of his $20 million release clause.

Gonzalo Montiel would need a work visa should he join the London based club.

Rodrigo de Paul scored for Udinese in their 2-1 loss vs. Napoli.

The Argentina man was on the scoresheet and brought his season tally up to 7 goals and 5 assists. De Paul received the ball at the edge of the penalty area and his right footed finish was enough to give Udiese the 1-0 lead.

He has been linked with a move away to Udinese all season and it remains to be seen if he will be staying or not.

Lionel Messi scored twice and assisted in FC Barcelona’s 5-0 win vs. Alaves.

Messi assisted the first goal of the match, a little dink pass into Ansu Fati who would give Barcelona the 1-0 lead. The Barcelona captain would score the second, a lovely little dribble inside the penalty area to double their lead.

The Argentina man would also scored the last goal of the match, a cross sent in found Messi who would score from inside the penalty area. He is now the leading goal scorer and could win the Pichichi award as he is on 25 goals with Madrid’s Karim Benzema on 21 goals with the Frenchman having just one game left to play.

He also leads La Liga with 21 assists.

Former Argentina, Boca Juniors left back Silvio Marzolini passes away

Former Argentina national team and Boca Juniors legend Silvio Marzolini has passed away at 79 years of age.

Regarded by many as the greatest left back Argentina has ever produced, Marzolini took part in two World Cup tournaments. The first being in 1962 and the second in 1966 in England where he was elected as the best left back of that tournament and part of the team of the tournament. From 1960-1969 he was part of the Argentina national team played 28 matches.

He made his league debut with Ferro Carril Oeste in 1959 where he played on year with the club. He went on to join Boca Juniors where he played with them from 1960-1972, winning 6 titles. As a coach, he won one title with Boca, in 1981, the Metropolitano.

Marzolini suffered a stroke last year in addition to being diagnosed with a tumor.

Rest in peace to a great man and an Argentina legend.
