World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 38, Javier SAVIOLA

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 38 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 38th place we have Javier SAVIOLA scoring in the 38th minute versus the Ivory Coast at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

It was Argentina’s opening match of the tournament in Germany 2006 and it was against World Cup debutant, Didier DROGBA’s Ivory Coast. A star studded Argentina team coached by Jose PEKERMAN who had managed many of the players from youth level. Argentina picked up a 2-1 win with Hernan CRESPO scoring the first, Javier SAVIOLA the second and Juan Roman RIQUELME assisting both.

Roberto AYALA had a goal disallowed early in the 14th minute after his header appeared (or not) to have crossed the line. Luckily for Argentina, a foul on Hernan CRESPO lead to an Argentina free kick. Up stepped RIQUELME who sent one into the Ivorian area and CRESPO was the first to pounce on the ball. Just like that it was 1-0 for the Albiceleste.

The second goal was pure genius by Juan Roman RIQUELME. An absolutely deadly pass in from Argentina’s number 10 lead SAVIOLA in one on one with the goalkeeper and SAVIOLA with the lightest of touches scored the second.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:

1. Roberto ABBONDANZIERI
2. Roberto AYALA
3. Juan Pablo SORIN
5. Esteban CAMBIASSO
6. Gabriel HEINZE
7. Javier SAVIOLA

Report: Bayern Munich ready to pay €100m for Paulo DYBALA of Juventus

8

In what would be a blockbuster move, Bavarian giants Bayern Munich have are reportedly ready to make a €100m bid for Paulo DYBALA.

BILD of Germany and Corriere Torino in Italy are both reporting that Bayern have already made enquiries about signing the little jewel from Juventus. DYBALA’s lack of playing time and rumored problems with Juventus coach ALLEGRI are not a secret and while there is still the World Cup to play, this has the potential of being the biggest move of the summer.

While the 24 year old is constantly being linked to a move outside of Italy, this appears to be the first genuine interest from a giant club.

DYBALA scored on the weekend in Juve’s 3-1 win against Bologna.

Mauro ICARDI scores, Cristian PAVON assists twice for Boca

Mauro ICARDI struck again while Christian PAVON added two assists to his name.

Despite being absolutely on fire, Mauro ICARDI has reportedly been told that he will not be going to the World Cup with Argentina. Yet that hasn’t stopped the Inter man from scoring. This time ICARDI added a third goal for Inter in their 4-0 win away to Udinese.

The number 9 scored in first half injury time which all but sealed the victory and the three points for his club. It was goal number 28 for Mauro ICARDI in Serie A this season which makes him Inter’s highest goalscorer in a single season since Antonio ANGELILO in 1959!

From someone who will not be going to the World Cup to someone who is very likely going to be on the plane with Argentina, Cristian PAVON continues to add to his impressive run of form. The Boca Juniors man had two assists in Boca’s 2-0 win against Union.

Two different style passes from PAVON. The first a pass sent in from out wide which went across the back line and onto the feet of Ramon “Wanchope” ABILA. The second a run across the edge of the area and a pass in to ABILA once more.
