Erik LAMELA, Manuel LANZINI and Lucas ALARIO all score twice

Erik LAMELA, Manuel LANZINI (with LANZINI scoring an absolute beauty) and Lucas ALARIO all scored twice.

It was a day of goals in the English Premier League as Erik LAMELA scored twice (forced a third off a deflection) in Tottenham’s 5-4 win against Leicester City. The first goal coming in the 49th minute, a tap in from close range. The second goal (while not given to LAMELA) was a massively deflected goal. The third being very similar to the first as it also came from close range.

Manuel LANZINI also scored twice for his club West Ham in a 3-1 win against Everton. LANZINI’s first goal coming from the edge of the area. The second goal was a curler of a striker. From the goalkeeper’s right on the edge of the area, LANZINI curled one in for West Ham’s third.

Lucas ALARIO scored two times on Saturday, two very different goals. The first coming from a nearly impossible angle, from the right side of the goalkeeper into the top net. A fabulous strike by the former River Plate man. The second goal saw ALARIO pounce on a bad back pass as he rounded the goalkeeper and scored.

Jorge VALDANO: “MESSI is being asked for things you ask a team and not a single man”

One of the most intelligent people in Argentine football and World Cup hero Jorge VALDANO has spoken about what it was like winning the World Cup in 1986, what went wrong in 1982, Lionel MESSI and this World Cup.

In an interview with El Pais, VALDANO stated that what is being asked of from MESSI is not fair, he discussed how he cried like a child in a park after having won the World Cup and much more. Here’s what he had to say:

Does it benefit Argentina that their biggest stars are without any official matches?

“If I were MESSI, I would start the preseason for the World Cup in Russia right now, taking into account that Barcelona no longer play big games. I would concentrate on reaching the World Cup physically impeccable. There are many ways to go up against competition and also you can do a more demanding job during the week and play games with a bigger workload in order to get there (to the World Cup) in the best possible way.”

How do you see the Argentina National Team and MESSI at the 2018 World Cup?

“MESSI is being asked for things you ask a team and not a single man. He is the great captain of this team and now we have to find a team that is capable of understanding the genius. It is not always easy to play with a genius and that is why it is very important for everyone to know how to strengthen that weapon (MESSI) that distinguishes the Argentina National Team. The competitiveness of the Argentine players is seen every week in hundreds of different cases around the world, we are going to trust Argentina’s race and genetics.”

What expectations do you have for the World Cup?

“I generate expectations out of those who play well. Once more Spain, in a methodical way has become an example; I expect things from Germany, I expect things from Brazil because Tite is doing a great job. Argentina are among the favorites and let’s not forget that this generation are runners-up of a World Cup.”

Why wasn’t Argentina able to get past the second round of Spain in 1982 after being champions in 1978?

“I don’t have a theory that explains why the best players of 1978 and some of the best ones of 1986 were unable to have a better tournament in 1982. MARADONA was very young and [Mario] KEMPES was beginning to decline. This finally became a problem when it was time for the tournament. Also, there was a big distraction that was the Malvinas/Falklands war and that put football secondary and in a way, it interfered.”

What did you first think of when you scored a goal in the final of Mexico 1986?

“The first thing that came to my mind was “this is not happening to me.” I think happiness has some sort of limit and that exceeded that limit. I didn’t think it was real. When I got to the dressing room I was sitting on the floor, one arm holding [Ricardo] GIUSTI and the other [Julio] OLARTICOECHEA. Both of them crying and me trying not to cry. After that, when I arrived in Madrid, my brother had sent me tapes with songs and messages from Argentina.

“One morning I put on my walkman and went for a run and in the middle of the messages was recorded my goal in the World Cup, commentated by Jose Maria MUNOZ. Right then I started crying like a kid. I had to hide in the middle of the park in order to cry.”

World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 32, Hernan CRESPO

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 32 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 32nd place we have Hernan CRESPO scoring his 32nd goal for Argentina against Mexico at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Perhaps a match that is mostly remembered for an absolute dream goal by Maxi RODRIGUEZ, there were still two others which were scored prior to that goal by Maxi. A repeat of the 2005 Confederations Cup semi-final match, Argentina took on Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Rafa MARQUEZ opened the scoring for Mexico early in the match but the lead didn’t last long. A corner kick by Juan Roman RIQUELME landed onto the edge of the foot of Hernan CRESPO and just like that, Argentina’s number 9 had scored his 32nd goal for his country.

The match needed extra time (although it shouldn’t have gone that far as Lionel MESSI had a goal which was wrongly disallowed for offside) and in those extra 30 minutes, we saw one of the best goals in the history of that competition.

Lionel MESSI to Juan Pablo SORIN who sent in a cross to Maxi RODRIGUEZ and well, we all know the rest.

Here was the starting XI for the match:

1. Roberto ABBONDANZIERI
2. Roberto AYALA
3. Juan Pablo SORIN
5. Esteban CAMBIASSO
6. Gabriel HEINZE
7. Javier SAVIOLA
8. Javier MASCHERANO
9. Hernan CRESPO
10. Juan ROman RIQUELME
13. Lionel SCALONI
18. Maxi RODRIGUEZ

Gabriel MERCADO suffers muscle injury, substituted off for Sevilla

Hernan CRESPO on Mauro ICARDI: “Argentina really need a striker like him”

Hernan CRESPO has come out and stated that it is possible that Mauro ICARDI is currently not in the Argentina team because ICARDI isn’t friends with Lionel MESSI.

Some big words coming from Argentina legend Hernan CRESPO in regards to Inter captain and number 9 Mauro ICARDI. Speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, CRESPO had this to say:

“If I were Inter, I’d never, ever sell ICARDI. What sign would it give to the fans if their most representative, most talented player, the captain of the team, was sold? I don’t know of teams who reinforce by selling their best player. If anything, it’s important to build on the top player, finding a group that can support him and let him perform to his best.

“Inside the penalty area, Icardi has no equal on a global scale. When a cross arrives, he is deadly. If you want to build moves with central passing, then Gonzalo HIGUAIN or Sergio AGUERO are more suited, but if you do like Inter with tons of crosses flung into the box, where are you going to get anyone better than ICARDI?

“He has such quick thinking and then executes it, he is physically like a bull, shoots well with his right or left foot, gets almost everything in the air.

“After Cristiano RONALDO and MESSI, who are on another planet, there are many strikers challenging for the third step on that podium and I put ICARDI in there.

“As far as I can see, it’s because he is no friend of MESSI, or am I wrong? My beloved Seleccion is now built around a magic circle, understand? ICARDI is not in that circle and therefore, unfortunately, won’t go to the World Cup in Russia.

“I believe this is a terrible mistake. Argentina really need a striker like him.”
