Argentina suffer first ever home defeat to Paraguay

In what can only be described as a disastrous result, Argentina lost 1-0 to Paraguay at home.

One win, two draws and one defeat are what Argentina have accumulated as results under Edgardo BAUZA and the worst is yet to come. Fielding what can only be described as a massively unbalanced team, BAUZA’s lack of tactical awareness cost him and team. The lines were too far and wide between the midfielders and attackers which was a problem that haunted Argentina the entire match.

The goal came through a massive mess-up in the midfield which left GONZALEZ free on the ball with 35 year old Martin DEMICHELIS trying to play catch up. The result? Sergio ROMERO beatin at his near post and Paraguay picked up all three points.

Sergio AGUERO had a penalty saved minutes into the second half and Marcos ROJO had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside. But that was it. At one point, BAUZA threw in everything including the kitchen sink. Paulo DYBALA, Lucas PRATTO, Gonzalo HIGUAIN, Angel DI MARIA and Sergio AGUERO all on at the same time. But nothing to show for it.

In what was supposed to be Argentina’s easiest match (on paper) in a while turned out to be a disaster. Next up? A match away to Brazil and after that at home to Colombia.

Argentina look for important 3 points at home

Argentina host Paraguay on Tuesday night in Cordoba in what is a must win match for them.

It’s 5th place Argentina against 6th place Paraguay on Tuesday. Argentina are currently on 16 points (tied with 3rd and 4th place Ecuador and Colombia) while Paraguay are on 12 points. A win for the home team on Tuesday would certainly start to create some distance between them and the team behind.

Make sure to visit our World Cup Qualifiers page for full match fixtures, results and more. The team has drawn their last two matches 2-2 and will need these 3 points going into the November fixtures when they are away to Brazil and home to Colombia. Edgardo BAUZA confirmed the line-up as following:

ROMERO; MERCADO, DEMICHELIS, MUSACCHIO, ROJO; BANEGA, MASCHERANO; GAITAN, AGUERO, DI MARIA; HIGUAIN

The CB partnership for Argentina is an absolute new one, with veteran Martin DEMICHELIS partnering alongside Mateo MUSACCHIO, who will be earning his 3rd cap (DEMICHELIS is on 49 caps himself). DEMICHELIS last played for Argentina earlier this year (also in Cordoba) when Argentina picked up a 2-0 victory against Bolivia in a World Cup Qualifier. MUSACCHIO has not played a match for Argentina since March 2015 in a 2-0 friendly against El Salvador.

Argentina’s joint top scorer in these qualifiers Gabriel MERCADO (2 goals) returns to the line-up in place of the suspended Pablo ZABALETA. In midfield, Ever BANEGA replaces Matias KRANEVITTER. And up front, Nicolas GAITAN comes in for Cordoba’s own Paulo DYBALA.

Argentina are undefeated in these World Cup Qualifiers in the year 2016. Here are the results (click on match for full line-ups and more).

Paulo DYBALA’s Argentina message

21

The kid from Córdoba will be playing his first match in his hometown of Córdoba while playing for the Argentina National Team on Tuesday night and he’s posted a message on Instagram.

DYBALA took to Instagram to post a picture and write a message to everyone about his dreams and what the match on Tuesday means to him. Here’s the translated version of what he wrote:

“When a kid starts his adventure in the youth teams, he’s full of dreams: The first is to play at the biggest stadium in the city he’s from, with the shirt of his favorite team. The second is to play at the same stadium but this time with the shirt of the National Team. Tomorrow’s going to be difficult to say hi to everyone in the stands but I know everyone’s going to remember the kid who played for Instituto. Córdoba, my third dream is to win and be able to score a goal at the Kempes stadium with the shirt of the National Team. Tomorrow, I want everyone together cheering for me and my team mates.”

Paulo DYBALA will start the match on the bench for Argentina but we all do sure hope he gets to play and score in an Argentina victory on Tuesday night!

Edgardo BAUZA confirms starting eleven in press conference

Edgardo BAUZA held a press conference on Monday night and took the chance to confirm the starting line-up for the match against Paraguay on Tuesday night.

BAUZA confirmed the line-up and spoke about the team, the fans and more. Here’s what he had to say:

“The team will be: ROMERO; MERCADO, DEMICHELIS, MUSHACCHIO, ROJO; BANEGA, MASCHERANO, DI MARIA; AGUERO, GAITAN; HIGUAIN”

“This group always goes out to give it their all. But there are situations where the result just isn’t there. There’s self-criticism, we’ve analyzed things that we did well and the things we didn’t do so well. It’s going to be a tough match, your typical World Cup Qualifier but we’ll do the things to win.”

“It’s always good to have a full stadium, the full support of the fans, like we’re going to have, it’s added motivation for us. I think it’s great that the people have the chance to watch the National Team and a World Cup Qualifier at that.”

“We have to possess the ball, we can’t afford to lose it in the middle of the pitch. We chose to stay here so that the players can get a proper night’s sleep. The changes were a must and those coming in have the capabilities of having a good match. We have confidence in them.”
