Julio OLARTICOECHEA: “There’s a lot of work to do”

14

Argentina U20 and Olympic coach Julio OLARTICOECHEA spoke about the Olympic team and the work the AFA have to do.

OLARTICOECHEA commented about the team’s early exit at the Olympics, money and the current state of the AFA. Here’s what he had to say:

“To all those who say that we only think about money… You’re all wrong. When one reaches this level, money isn’t of interest, the shirt yes. When you lose, you cry a lot. I know how every player is feeling right now.”

“We are not used to getting eliminated this early at a tournament. When I first came in I said I wouldn’t make any excuses. The team which went to the Olympics is a good one. The truth is that the smaller countries have grown a lot. This whole situation should serve as an example for the leaders (at the AFA) to understand that there’s a lot of work to do for a long time.”

“CALDERA, my assistant, does a thousand things. He earns 18,000 pesos per month and for three month’s now he hasn’t gotten paid. He organized everything for the guys, he’s helped us a lot.”

“Yesterday, I called my wife and told her to take money from my daughter, who is a baker and earns good money. I spoke to the higher up’s (AFA leaders) that we needed money. And I’m taking money from my daughter. It’s something to cry about but it’s reality”.

BAUZA meets with MESSI & MASCHERANO

57

New national team coach Edgardo Bauza has finally met with Lionel MESSI and Javier MASCHERANO in Barcelona today. Neither Messi nor Mascherano have made any comments to the press after the meeting, which lasted for more than an hour.

Bauza stated after speaking with the Argentine newspaper Ole as: “We didn’t speak about his return. We just had a little talk about football…I’ll be calling him in a few days.” He then said… “Let’s see if this chat has helped.”

He also stated: “I am naturally an optimist because in my life I am like that, but it’s a personal decision and I don’t want to interfere.”

Bauza is expected to return to Argentina on Friday.  The deadline to submit squads for the September World Cup 2018 qualifying matches is next Friday August 16. Argentina’s first match is at home against Uruguay on September 1st and then on the 6th of September they will play their second qualifier against host Venezuela. There’s also a possibility that Messi does not play the qualifiers in September but instead returns for the two October qualifiers against Peru and Paraguay.

What do you guys think? Will he be back? Would you prefer him to come back in October after taking a longer period off? What’s better for the team?

Match Highlights: Lionel MESSI steals the show in Gamper match

24

Lionel MESSI absolutely stole the show for Barcelona in their 3-2 win against Sampdoria.

Lionel MESSI scored two fantastic goals and had an incredible assist in Barcelona’s first pre-season match at the Camp Nou this season. A dribble around the goalkeeper for his first goal and a typical Lionel MESSI free kick goal for the second. His assist? Just your every day bicycle kick cross to Luis SUAREZ (Oh if only he was born on the other side of the river plate) to score.

For Barcelona, Javier MASCHERANO came on as a substitute and for Sampdoria, Ricardo ALVAREZ was also a substitute.

Argentina knocked out of Rio 2016 Olympics

The two time champions of the tournament have been knocked out of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Argentina, back to back winners in 2004 and 2008 drew 1-1 against Honduras and were not able to make it out of the group. The team is eliminated due to goal difference with Honduras and group leaders Portugal making it to the next round. Without team captain Victor CUESTA, the team missed a few chances in front of goal, most notably the new West Ham player Jonathan CALLERI.

With the score at 0-0, goalkeeper Geronimo RULLI made a fantastic save which was later overshadowed by a penalty kick save just moments afterwards. Still at 0-0, it was Angel CORREA’s chance to give Argentina the lead as they were awarded a penalty kick but his shot did not go in.

Honduras took the lead (ironically enough through a penalty) but a deflected free kick by Mauricio MARTINEZ tied it at 1-1. However, they couldn’t score the second goal and the team got eliminated.
