Lautaro Martínez: “I didn’t do the World Cup I wanted”

Lautaro Martínez spoke at a press conference in Italy prior to Inter’s match vs. Napoli on Wednesday. He commented on Argentina winning the World Cup and his performance in the
tournament.

When asked about the moment when Gonzalo Montiel scored the last penalty, giving Argentina the title, el Toro” expressed the following:

“It was truly unique. I didn’t think it could be so beautiful. It’s indescribable, a dream come true. Winning the title was always the goal.”

He mentioned that “the strength of a group is essential”, and that he will try to convey that to his clubmates.

Martínez also talked about his performance in the World Cup and did a harsh self-evaluation. In addition, he praised Julián Álvarez on how well he replaced him in the attack:

“I didn’t do the World Cup I wanted. I didn’t arrive as expected, I was playing with my ankle injected with painkillers. Then a colleague came in who did better than me and I’m very happy. I gave everything, even from the outside. It’s nice when you have a partner in attack who does things so well.”

The World Cup champions are back with their club. Paredes and Di María are the latest Argentine players, along with Alexis Mac Allister, are back.

Juventus did not appear to do a special World Cup return to the players.

Nico Paz is in the Real Madrid team for their Copa del Rey match.

Paz has been called up to the Real Madrid first team for Tuesday’s Copa del Rey match vs. Cacereno. The 18 year old is the number 10 for the Argentina U20 national team.

He is set to be called up for the U20 Sudamericano tournament beginning later this month.

Alexis Mac Allister received a big World Cup welcome as he returned to his club Brighton.

Mac Allister is back with his club Brighton after winning the World Cup with Argentina and was greeted by the players and staff as he returned. The 24 year old is the latest Argentina return to his club after winning the trophy and Brighton have received videos of his return.

Emiliano Buendía scored the first Premier League goal of 2023 in ASton Villa’s 2-0 win vs. Tottenham Hotspur.

Buendía started the match for Villa and woulkd score the first goal of the match. A shot onto Hugo Lloris was saved by the goalkeeper but he would give the rebound and the ball would eventually fall to Buendía who would score. Here are Buendía’s numbers, via Statman Dave:
