Argentina U20 coach Javier Mascherano announces preliminary team for Sudamericano

Argentina U20 coach Javier Mascherano has announced the preliminary team for the Sudamericano which will be played in January and February.

While the senior national team, the entire country and fans worldwide celebrate the Argentina national team winning their third World Cup, Javier Mascherano and his coaching staff are at work.

The Argentina U20 team will take part in the U20 Sudamericano tournament which will take place between January 19 and February 12 in Colombia. The team has been drawn in Group A along with hosts Colombia, Brazil, Paraguay and Peru.

The top four teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2023 U20 World Cup in Indonesia while the top three will qualify for next year’s Pan American games, along with that tournament’s host Chile.

Javier Mascherano has announced his preliminary list of players for the tournament and training has already started for the tournament. Goalkeeper Federico Gomes Gerth was the sparring player with the Argentina national team at the World Cup. Some of these players have also been part of previous youth tournaments.

There is one call up to a Premier League signed player, Facundo Buonanotte, although he is still playing in Argentina. Benjamin Cremaschi of Inter Miami is also on the team. Here are the players that have been called up:

Mascherano’s team plays Paraguay on January 21 in their first match. After that they will play against Brazil on January which is followed by another match on January 25 vs. Pery. The last group match is on January 27 vs. Colombia.

Lionel Messi has a PSG return date set as he will be back in January after winning the World Cup.

Messi is still in Argentina with his family, having celebrated Christmas on Sunday. The World Cup winner will not return to Paris until January 3, meaning he will miss two of PSG’s league matches and one French Cup match.

The Argentine would make his return for their match on Wednesday, January 11 vs. Angers.

The man who provided an assist in the World Cup final turns 24 years old today. An absolute gem of a midfielder, Mac Allsiter found himself in the starting eleven due to injuries in the Argentina midfield but once in the eleven, he never lost his spot.

He was Argentina’s best player in the first half vs. Mexico and scored the opening goal of the match in the 2-0 win vs. Poland. In the knockout stages, he was instrumental in shielding the ball, moving it forward and connecting with the attack.

The former World Cup winning coach gave an interview to Radio Marca, in which he spoke about Lionel Messi, stating that he is the best player he has ever seen:

“Of all the players I have known throughout the years in football, for me Messi, for his consistency and his quality as a player, has been impressive. He has had fantastic seasons and has always lifted his team forward.”
