Argentina national team Lionel Scaloni has most of his players set for the starting eleven against Australia in the Round of 16 at the World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni is not expected to make many changes to the starting eleven for Saturday’s match. Per reports out of Argentina, it will be Rodrigo de Paul, Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister who will start, the same players which started in the 2-0 win vs. Poland.

Julián Álvarez will replace Lautaro Martínez, just as he did against Poland. It will be Lionel Messi and Álvarez up front and with no Ángel Di María, it will be one of Ángel Correa, Papu Gómez or Paulo Dybala replacing Di María in attack.

Nicolás Otamendi and Nahuel Molina will start. Per a report by ESPN, the coaching staff has not yet decided on Lisandro Martínez or Cristian Romero to start as they are worried about possible fatigue on Romero’s part. This would be the rumored eleven:

Emiliano Martínez; Molina, Otamendi, Romero, Acuña, De Paul, Enzo, Mac Allister; Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez, Ángel Correa or Papu Gómez or Paulo Dybala

Ángel Di María will not start for Argentina vs. Australia in the Round of 16 on Saturday.

Di María will not be in the starting eleven for Argentina as coach Lionel Scaloni is set to go with another attacker. According to several reports out of the Argentine media, it will be Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez starting with another attacker.

The 34 year old started all three of Argentina’s group games at the World Cup but was substituted out due to discomfort against Poland. Tests revealed that he has a muscle overload with Lionel Scaloni also commenting on the situation.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni is expected to go with one of Ángel Correa or Papu Gómez to start in the Argentina attack. Paulo Dybala also has a chance to start.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni held a training on Friday with Ángel Di María training separately from the team.

Lionel Scaloni tried out two players up front alongside Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez in training. Papu Gómez and Ángel Correa were the two players in attack.

Scaloni tried both Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel with Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi and Marcos Acuña. Scaloni also repeated the same three in midfield. According to TyC Sports, here were the players from training:

Emiliano Martínez; Molina/Montiel, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Marcos Acuña; Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez and Papu Gómez/Ángel Correa.

Ángel Di María trained separately from the team. It remains to be seen if he will be able to start the match.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke at a press conference on Friday about the team’s match vs. Australia, VAR at the World Cup and the support of fans from Bangladesh.

Lionel Scaloni was at the press conference on Friday where he had spoken about Ángel Di María but also about the Round of 16 match and the use of VAR so far. Speaking about Australia, here is what he had to say:

“Australia is a good team, it’s 11 against 11 like they said yesterday. You have to put aside the theoretical favoritism and play the game. Our idea is to play like we did in the last games.

“Their form doesn’t surprise me, they are a good team with a tradition in World Cups and that makes it difficult.”

In regards to VAR:

“We lived it and it’s really difficult to digest, especially because it’s a very new thing and it’s implemented in a World Cup. It’s like that for everyone.”
