It’s shameful for them to concede 3 goals in 11 minutes, there were 11 vs 11 players to defend 02 goal lead, lack of experience and Messi & team desire / will, to win changed the game outcome. Referring since first day of football have been somewhat debatable, calls had been in favor or against the teams
Its true that we have many holes to fix, a couple of them are pretty big as well. Its also true that we have been growing after each game. In the group stage, the teams we faced were slightly weaker (compared to those in the KO) and they also didnt play for the win, which made our job easier as Messi was able to cover the holes.
Romero, Paredes, Enzo, Alvarez, Lautaro, Tagliafico have all started contributing which will hopefully boost their confidence.
The players that concern me are:
Emi (worst goals conceded to saves ratio in this wc and by far?)
DePaul – Still has energy, but lots of missed passes and not much defensive effectiveness either.
Molina/Montiel (Pretty poor both in defense and attack)
Licha (Had a great game in attacking perspective against CV, but pretty poor in defense in the last game – European teams will be way tougher)
Macca – nowhere near to his level, thought with Paredes at CDM, he would excel in his LCM role, but it was not seen against Egypt.
Would want some of them replaced against Swiss while the others back to form.

Ufff!! so many hours after our match and after watching so many highlights and analysis, I am able to think properly. First thing.. whatever happened was emotionally and physically draining but good that it happened within 90 mins, we were looking tired as the game was also played after three days from the 120 min gruelling game that we played. Good we did not need to do that again and also have 1 more day to rest this time.

I think we can treat this match like the Netherlands match of 2022. Would start Otamendi and Romero if we are playing 4-4-2 and instead of RDP may be palacious. RDP can come in after 65 mins against tired legs. Also like against Netherlands a 5-3-2 might work with Nico and Molina/Simione. Lets see what they decide.

Most people seemed to neglect a pretty significant advantage so to speak, in which our next opponent Switzerland has played in 120min and PK’s in their previous game against Colombia, while we did a grueling one but only in 90min. That has to take a toll or two on the Swiss.

Argentina dominate the game and if Argentina scored all the chances they could have won by 5 or 6 goals. When you couldn’t hold up 2 goal lead with just 15 minutes to go you should look into your own team rather than blaming others.
For me Leonardo Parades was the best player of the match.

It was Molina, Enzo, and Paredes vs Salah and they couldn’t stop him nor intercept the pass to number 12. Molina and Enzo were beaten easily and let them cross in. There, Licha was completely played by Egypt’s forward. It was completely chaotic. I feel like had Cuti or Otamendi was involved they would command the defense much better to neutralize the situation. So disappointed with Enzo and Paredes.

So the anti-Argentina hate is at its absolute peak. Messi haters and Cristina fangirls simply cannot accept what Argentina has achieved over the last 6–7 years. With Portugal crashing out in the R16 and cristina’s international career finally coming to an end, the bitterness and hate has gone into overdrive. Yesterday, they were already planning the celebrations after Egypt went 2–0 up, only to watch Argentina turn the game around in 13 minutes and leave them with a miserable week to remember! On top of that what’s even more pathetic is seeing football dragged into completely unrelated geopolitical conflicts. I have seen people trying to link Argentina, Messi and this squad to the Israel & Palestine war, as if Messi or the Argentina national team are somehow responsible for the suffering and deaths of Palestinian civilians. As for Egypt’s manager and coaching staff, all the whining, finger-pointing and accusing FIFA of rigging the tournament in favor of Argentina, it does looks like an attempt to distract their pissed off fans and shift the conversation away from what actually happened on the pitch instead of taking responsibility for blowing a 2 -0 lead in just 13 minutes through his poor tactical decisions and game management. To be honest, that was one of the few matches where I thought the referee and VAR got virtually every major decision right. If you take away the 2 goals we conceded, Argentina absolutely dominated the game. Also, those two goals came from our own poor play rather than Egypt producing anything exceptional or outplaying us. If the Egypt manager was managing an EPL team and blew a 2-0 lead like he did yeterday, he would be crucified by the english media and the fans!!

He has never been great in commanding the box. He’s known for great reflection. We conceded many goals from the benign crosses, you name it: The Netherlands, Ecuador, Jordan, and now Egypt. Unfortunately, both of our reserved goalies are not great in this either. Looking back, perhaps only Sergio Romero was the one confident with going out to catch the ball from crosses.
I have followed Mundo for ages but never commented here. But here’s my take on so far and interested to hear what you’all think. Scaloni’s blueprint hasn’t changed in my opinion, but the reality on the pitch has clearly. In Qatar, we won because of a flawless execution where a hungry, younger midfield acted as a physical shield, letting Messi dominate. Fast forward four years, and we are running the exact same play with a core that is older, slower, and heavily scouted by every opponent. The strategy isn’t failing because it’s bad; it’s stalling because you can’t ask the same aging legs to execute a high-intensity blueprint forever without injecting fresh, young blood into the engine room.
But more importantly, there could be a much deeper, unspoken psychological drag at play here, and it’s the elephant in the locker room. In 2022, the guys were ready to die on the pitch just to give Messi his missing crown. But now that the mission is accomplished, does that same 100% selfless hunger exist? If Argentina wins a consecutive World Cup, the global media narrative is already written: It’s Messi’s ultimate legacy. Subconsciously, it is incredibly hard for elite, world-class players to maintain that absolute, self-sacrificing “bodyguard” mindset when they know the individual glory will never be distributed equally. We have the quality to go all the way, but are we emotionally in the same headspace as four years ago, or has the hunger evolved?
In case of Portugal, I think this subtle/subconscious resentment was at play as well where the elite superstars all looking great in paper felt that if they did win the world cup, the ultimate reward and historical glory will be disproportionately handed to one individual regardless of collective effort.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the psychological thing you mentioned about the team already having reaching the summit and winning the World Cup already maybe lead to them not having the same drive to go all over again.
I have written a lot about the Argentina NT and football in general on Reddit and in 2022, one thing I mentioned was that Scaloni had to take lessons from what Joachim Low did wrong after they won the tournament in 2014 and actually look to infuse new blood after 2022. I foresaw a world where the players may not have the drive to go again and it’s very natural. Now in the last 4 years, a lot of people have been whispering about another golden generation of young Argentine talents potentially breaking out. We had Prestianni, Echeverri and Mastantuono being hyped up. The Boca trio of Alan Varela, Almendra, Medina, Equi Fernandez. Soule, Barrenchea, Perrone, Julio Soler at Bournemouth, etc. So many young talents hyped to the moon in the years after 2022 and I haven’t even come close to listing them all out. And there were the old newer, younger talents lurking in and around the national team yet to be fully integrated – – NICO CAPALDO, EMI BUENDIA, NEHUEN PEREZ, ALAN VARELA… SO MANY. There was a time you couldn’t go on Twitter without seeing Tweets talking about how stacked Argentina were going into the World Cup with so many options to choose from and Scaloni had so many options to try out and see who would be best for the NT and infusing the newer guard into the team and moving on from deadweight players who really weren’t that good during the Scaloni era. We were convinced a golden generation was coming through… just like Germany pre-2018.
Unfortunately, over the last four years, Scaloni has looked more and more like he went down the Joachim Low route settling on the old guard from 2022 and keeping the exact same players. I’ve felt the way we’ve been run as a NT over the past 4 years have had hints of arrogance and cockiness. For the whole 2 years after the World Cup win, every international break where the Argentina NT felt less like we were building strong connections nor building for the next World Cup but more a tribute act to Messi and the old guard for winning the World Cup before. Just being thankful Messi was even playing. That’s all well and good, but there was a refusal to move on. It felt like they just wanted to celebrate the World Cup win forever instead of looking forward.
Slowly over the years, we were becoming visibly worse and worse as a team on the pitch. The central combinations and beautiful attacking passing sequences we had pre-2022 were becoming less and less frequent. We were becoming sloppier with our passing visibly on the pitch. Before it seemed like God willed every pass to reach its target, but more often we were underhitting passes, sending them in slightly off directions, getting them intercepted, etc. Those beautiful passing moves weren’t coming off. Soon our goals would primarily come from random moments of chaos and mistakes from the opposition or Messi just playing a ball over the top and someone running in behind. Our old method of playing beautiful interchanges and quick passing was no longer working the way it did.
I wrote in the Aregntina vs Ecuador game in Copa America 2024, “Our passing used to be laser accurate even when playing at 90mph, clean, quick and crisp. Nowadays it’s more sloppy and there are too many turnovers.” The signs were there.
Our original level in 2022 was so high and dominant however, that even with the amount we regressed in the 2 years after the World Cup win, we were still the best team in the competition… but beatable. We lost to Bielsa’s Uruguay, absolutely woeful that day (never imagined I’d ever see the group like that and should have triggered the renewal of new faces, but alas). We struggled against Ecuador and Colombia. But still won the title.
And in the 2 years after that, we slowly regressed more and more and went from one of the favourites to win the World Cup in 2026 to an outside shout once more.
On top of that we were getting sloppier defensively. Before if we lost the ball, we’d hound the opposition with our hungry midfield and win the ball back. Now we’re more lackadaisacal and slower and we don’t recover the ball as fast as we used to. Our midfielders are still young and entering their prime years for the most part, none other than De Paul are over 30. And yet the drive and hunger to press and win the ball back as we used to isn’t there as it was before. We used to be clean with it, but now we give away more fouls. HOWEVER, they’ve defo upped the intensity during the World Cup so I have to give credit where credit is due.
Instead, over the years with every single call up sheet you’d wait hoping for a new name to get called up like Matias Soule, but it would ALWAYS be the same guys with a random throwaway Primeria Liga dude who’s name you’d hear in the team once and then never again. No intention WHATSOEVER to try out new names for ages.
The biggest slap in the face was in March this year when reports came out that Scaloni said “”Alright guys, the honeymoon is over. It’s great that we’re World Champions, but you need to be in peak form for the next World Cup.” and that he made it clear that nobody’s spot is safe, and some names might get cut from the squad. This mindset was needed 2 YEARS before… NOT 3 months before the actual tournament for God’s sake.
In spite of this, he STILL wasn’t trying out new names. We were receiving reports that he was putting out a “known team” in the friendlies that followed – what new thing would you uncover on a random Wednesday about the same players you’ve played since 2021?? Absolutely nothing!
What was Tomas Palacios doing called up to the NT in March when we could have used it to try and test someone who could actually be involved in 2022??
However, I will cut him some slack. You can only pick the players in the pool available to you. If they don’t develop correctly, that’s not Scaloni’s fault. They have to put the work in. Equi Fernandez should be in the team now and a worldwide known young talent, but he got derailed by the move to Saudi Arabia. That Federico Redondo kid was also hyped but threw himself away to go to Inter Miami. If the pool isn’t as good and you genuinely can’t pick them since they won’t improve your team… Scaloni can’t really pick them. Prestianni and Echeverri are too small and would get bullied off the ball and feel more like creative winger types only and not really quick enough nor got the athleticism to beat full backs in both directions – Di Maria could do both for reference. Julio Soler didn’t develop at Bournemouth. Neither of the Carboni brothers could put a stamp down and secure their place. If Barco and Paz only break out in the last year before the World Cup 2022 and no one else is in form nor actually done anything meaningful to warrant a call-up (like Echeverri before this and many others, there isn’t really any reason to call them up).
Now why Varela, Buendia, Paz nor Barco were called up before the recent friendlies (or even in years gone past in the cases of Soule and Varela) idk and that’s entirely on Scaloni. He didn’t refresh the squad at all but not many presented themselves as good choices to be part of the refresh. However, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been opportunities to bring new players into the team and he has rejected them all.
Reaching the quarter finals has papered over many cracks in Scaloni’s approach to this team in the last 4 years. Just because he won the World Cup in 2022 doesn’t make him ineligible to be criticised. I still think we can win this World Cup if he drops Mac Allister for Paz with his game model and the identity we play. But I do believe we could have approached these last 4 years MUCH more differently so we wouldn’t lose the drive to win.
I doing understand how Paz can replace Macca. Macca is a box to box, Paz is completely different type of player. He can only replace Messi in this squad imo.
I agree that newer players souls have been tried, but again I don’t see any new players came through but were not tried. Lisandro Martinez proved himself and he was inducted in the team. Simeone is not even regular at Atletico Maddy. Garnacho was promising and tried. I really can’t Scaloni hold responsible here.

If everything goes as expectedly, Argentina from here on will only face european teams. Teams that have players taller than ours. Aerial threats will be a concern. We will see a lot of crosses come for xaka, haland, kane. I hope scaloni has a plan for that. We have been leaking goals. If we can manage our defense we will score, we will win.

That is a worrying statement from your No1 goalkeeper and our second best player of 2022. If that’s genuinely how Dibu feels, then maybe it’s time to hand the gloves over to Musso, who had an outstanding Champions league campaign with Atletico. Argentina is about to play the QF of the world cup, confidence and decisiveness are everything. The national team has to come first, and no player should be guaranteed a starting spot if they don’t feel mentally ready before a WC QF match.
You guys never talk about how good Leandro Paredes is. What a player! That tackle will be iconic. The way he passes the ball is a joy to watch, so elegant. His long cross-field pass to Tagliafico and the cut-back to Álvarez, and the Egyptian goalie made a great save. If it had gone in, it would have been one of the best goals in the World Cup. This is an appreciation comment for Leandro Paredes.
He had an excellent game and deserves a spot over Depaul but Paredes’s problem is inconsistancy. He is good for a game or two and then he has a stretch of very poor perfomances which is why he no longer playing at the highest level in Europe.
Also, MacAllister is getting a lot of flak here but he also has been very good when pushing forward in the last 2 matches. He has just been unlucky otherwise he could easily have couple goals and assists. Yes he has sturuggled when breaking up opposition play and holding the ball which is why I think he needs to play closer to the oppostion goal than our own! For me it is Enzo who has been the worst of the lot despite his winning goal followed closely by Depaul.
I agree about Paredes; after Messi, he was the best player on the pitch for me. His range of passing is unmatched and a genuine joy to watch.
On that tackle in the 90th minute, it was sublime, a lifesaver, and in many ways reminded me of Mascherano’s tackle against Robben in 2014. But the question I want to ask: should Paredes have gone for it at all? He was the last man, and most coaches would tell you to keep dropping, stay goal-side, and wait for cover, never commit and risk being beaten completely. Had he missed that interception, he would have been completely out of the play with no chance to recover.
My reading is that he actually suddenly stopped from dropping to either tackle or committing a foul. You can see he took a quick look around, realized he was on the edge of the penalty box with a few Argentine players nearby, and calculated that even a foul there was unlikely to be a red card. But when he stopped running, the striker played the pass, and Paredes read it perfectly and intercepted.
So was it reckless or brilliant? Probably both.

If you go back and watch the clip, the Egyptian player to Paredes’ right side was more open and could have received the ball and run inside the box before crossing it off to Salah. Paredes anticipated that and Marmoush made the predictable pass to the left (Paredes’s right) and he was able to stop the counter.He read Marmoush and Egypt’s counterattack perfectly.
Paredes is our trump card for the upcoming matches.If he can just stay calm and composed with out unnecessary yellow cards,we will be champions.
The first goal was clearly a misjudgement on your part. You should have come forward and prevented the header. So you could have done, at least, that much. The second goal was not for you to save. I think you might pick up a few pages from how the English, Colombian and Swiss goalkeepers fared in the matches so far. But no need to lose your heart. You did your bit against Cabo Verde. You saved a scorcher in the dying minutes.
I think it was kinda far for him to come out for the first goal. Licha needed not to lose his bearing, who had time and space just like Enzo’s goal. If an attacker is able to head a ball from the box like that, it will be a goal at this level.
That Jordan goal is I raise my hand the highest. Those are goals best goalkeepers saves, or almost saves.

Agreed about De Paul though, he should come in as a sub at best. Scaloni should start Palacios or even better Barco in his place.
I back Paz over Lo Celso since he’s more dynamic. It would be a different role to the one in Jordan where he was on the right. He would play more on the left in between the lines to combine with Messi. Paredes is great because he can be the finder to break the lines (could also be Barco) and Paz the receiver.
We play in a really congested central part of the pitch that gets clogged. You need someone with a little creativity, being decent enough to carry the ball as well as good at riding contact which Nico Paz was really good at against Jordan, especially in the first half. Lo Celso’s older and less dynamic than Paz and smaller so rides contact a little worse. I don’t mind the Lo Celso shout tbf and think he should be Paz’s first sub.
