Lionel Messi recently gave an interview to where he discussed the Argentina national team, the Copa America and much more.

The best player in the world has stated that his priority this season is to win the league and the Champions League with Barcelona and the Copa America with Argentina. Speaking with FIFA.com, here’s what he had to say:

The Argentinian national team are undergoing a major transformation too. Have any of your team-mates surprised you in particular?

“I wouldn’t say they’ve surprised me because I knew them already and I know what they’re capable of. I see them with their clubs and I knew about the new breed coming through. Where they have surprised me, though, is as people. There were a lot of them that I didn’t know personally, and it was a lovely surprise to be able to share a Copa America with them and see that aside from being great players they’re very normal and down-to-earth people too.”

Lionel Scaloni has just been given the Argentina job on a permanent basis. How would you describe him?

“He’s a coach who has things clear in his head, who knows how to watch football and is very good at getting things across. He’s easy to understand, he’s good at his job and he knows how to handle the players. I think they got it right in giving him the job permanently and the space and time he needs to work with the national team.”

La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa America: what is Lionel Messi’s main objective this season?

“All of them. It’s been four years since we’ve won the Champions League and we really want to win it again. We know, though, that if we don’t do the job day in day out, then we won’t make it. And as for the Copa America, I’m really looking forward to having the opportunity to go for it yet again. I’m really excited about this year’s Copa.”

On being coached by Gabriel Heinze:

“He convinces you that you are the best and he keeps everyone at 100%. I’m very thankful for him. He told me there is always time to f*ck and for women but now is the time to work in football because it is what will make me triumph.

Emiliano Martinez of Arsenal and Matias Vargas are one of a few players who are expected to get a chance with the Argentina national team.

As reported, Lionel Scaloni’s team will play against both Germany and Ecuador in October. It’s already been confirmed that no players from either Boca Juniors or River Plate will take part in the games due to their Copa Libertadores clash.

This opens a number of spots for players which might normally not get a chance. Per a report by TyC Sports, Agustin Marchesin of FC Porto is likely the only one who was part of the September squad which will be part of the October team. With no Franco Armani and Esteban Andrada due to the aforementioned Superclasico, Emiliano Martinez of Arsenal is rumored to get called.

Emiliano Martinez recently gave an interview where he mentioned that he wanted to be part of the Argentina team for the 2020 Copa America. He might get his chance to debut with the team in October. The other goalkeeping spot could go to Udinese man Juan Musso, who was the third goalkeeper at the 2019 Copa America.

Matias Vargas is the other which will get an opportunity in the Argentina team. Newly signed with Espanyol, Vargas has been scoring and assisting with his performances finally getting him in the Argentina team.

Nicolas Gonzalez of Stuttgart, who was part of the Argentina U23 team is rumored to make the senior squad this time around while Lisandro Martinez would remain with the youth team.

Walter Kannemann, who missed the Copa America due to injury is likely to make the team.

Sergio Aguero is likely to miss the October games as well but is reported to make the November matches.

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino: “The dream is to coach Argentina”

26

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino has stated that he would like to coach the Argentine national team one day.

Speaking in an interview with Canal 7 from Mendoza, the former Argentina international spoke about coaching Argentina, the current coach and the future.

Here’s what he had to say:

“The dream is to one day be able to coach the Argentina national team. As an Argentina, that’s non-negotiable. Your country, your shirt, your flag… That is always a priority. What is clear is that the circumstances have to come naturally for it to be able to succeed. Today, it’s difficult because my future and my circumstances has it that I’m in England.

“But personally, it will always be a dream or one will always wait for the moment to get the chance to train their national team.”

On his name being thrown around along with Diego Simeone’s name and Marcelo Gallardo’s name as one of the candidates to coach Argentina after last year’s World Cup.

“They are two great coaches but Argentina have other great coaches as well and they could be up to the level to coach the national team.

“Myself, no one ever called me. I saw it in the press because logically I follow what is being said in Argentina and at times my name is there but no one communicated with me.

“It wasn’t an easy situation for the AFA, taking decisions is not something easy and even more so in football to be able to find that leader that could carry the job and allow Argentina to recover and be where it deserves to be.

“The current coaching staff, which is now confirmed, could bring Argentina back to their winning ways.”
