Former Argentina man Matias ALMEYDA has been named as the new coach of MLS club San Jose Earthquakes.

As we reported on Monday, there were strong rumors that ALMEYDA was set to become the new manager at San Jose Earthquakes. The club made it official posting the announcement on their website and social media. Jesse FIORANELLI, the general manager of the Earthquakes had this to say in regards to ALMEYDA:

“What we saw in Matias was a coach that brought success by creating a culture we strive to emulate. He has demonstrated leadership qualities in Argentina with River Plate and Banfield, as well as in Mexico with Chivas. He has always had a winning mentality, both as a player and a coach, and most importantly, he is someone that knows how to redirect a team in a difficult situation with a commitment to a distinct style of play and youth development.

“Matias came here because he welcomes the challenge of helping our organization open a new chapter after a grueling season. He had several other opportunities available to him from clubs and national teams around the world but made it very clear the Earthquakes were the one he wanted to lead.”

Good luck to ALMEYDA in the MLS!

Sergio ROMERO of Manchester United to start for Argentina vs. Iraq, Brazil

Sergio ROMERO is set to start both of Argentina’s friendly matches this month.

The Manchester United goalkeeper is set to start in his first match for Argentina since sustaining an injury in their 6-1 friendly loss against Spain back in March. ROMERO, who was dropped by previous Argentina coach Jorge SAMPAOLI for the World Cup due to injury, will reportedly start for his country when they play Iraq and Brazil in their tour of Saudi Arabia.

With River Plate goalkeeper Franco ARMANI having to opt out of the squad along with Geronimo RULLI not being in proper form and back-up goalkeeper to Franco ARMANI Guido HERRERA never having been selected for Argentina before, ROMERO will start for Argentina.

Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI talks injuries ahead of friendly matches

Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI spoke about the number of injuries which have hit his squad and the fitness of players.

As Argentina are set to play two friendly matches against Iraq and Brazil in Saudi Arabia, coach SCALONI will be missing a few players due to injury. Speaking to the media ahead of the match against Iraq, here is what he had to say:

“The travel is a killer. It’s 28 hours of flying to get there (Saudi Arabia) one day before the match to be evaluated. With that, I lost the chance to call-up other players. The decision was that they wouldn’t come and I believe it’s the best decision.

“The decision since we have been here is not to risk anyone, above all those who were injured recently and the risk is higher. We have fully confidence in them, that they want to be here and that’s the most important thing.

“It doesn’t bother me as a coach because I prefer that they come healthy. If they themselves let me know that they aren’t well, there’s nothing more for me to add.

“I got involved and I spoke personally. I have no doubt at all. It’s logical that it (the matches) being in between the Copa Libertadores is one more talking point for people.”

As mentioned in previous posts, Exequiel PALACIOS, Gonzalo MARTINEZ, Alan FRANCO, Cristian PAVON and Franco ARMANI will all miss the two matches.

Matias ALMEYDA is set to become the new coach of MLS club San Jose Earthquakes.

Several reports are emerging that the former Guadalajara coach will take over San Jose. The club’s official Twitter account even teased his appointment with the following tweet.

This would take the former Argentina man off the managerial market as he was linked with three different national teams. Mexico, Costa Rica and even the Argentina national team were all rumored at one point in the past few months to get him on board to manahe their team.

San Jose Earthquakes would be ALMEYDA’s fourth club he’ll have coached. He began his coaching career at his boy hood club River Plate. After that came Banfield before he went to Mexico to coach Guadalajara.
