Javier MASCHERANO says Santiago ASCACIBAR will be important to Argentina team

30

Javier MASCHERANO has come out in support of Stuttgart midfielder Santiago ASCACIBAR stating that he will be important to the Argentina National Team.

The former FC Barcelona midfielder turned defender knows a thing or two about being successful. Winning five La Liga titles, two Champions League titles and many more trophies to his name, MASCHERANO is one of the best of his generation when it comes to his position.

Retiring from the Argentina National Team as the country’s most all time capped player with 147 matches, a replacement is needed. And Stuttgart may have that replacement for Argentina in the form of Santiago ASCACIBAR. Only just 21 years old, ASCACIBAR joined from Estudiantes and has received praise from MASCHERANO himself.

Speaking with the Bundesliga’s official website, here’s what MASCHERANO had to say:

“I’ve always identified with this type of player. I really like his style of play. Ascacibar seems to me to be a great player. If he keeps improving he’ll end up being a very important player in European football and also for the Argentina national team.”

The Stuttgart midfielder has commented saying he still has a long way to go in achieving what MASCHERANO did.

“I’m still a long way from achieving what [MASCHERANO] did. You have to start from the ground floor and work your way up.”

Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI on Lionel MESSI, the future and more

27

Interim Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI spoke in length about Lionel MESSI, the future of the Argentina National Team and much more.

In an interview with Infobae, the former Argentina international went in depth discussing the future and what the kids mean to the National Team. However, he also commented on Lionel MESSI as well as Walter SAMUEL possibly joining the coaching staff. Here’s what he had to say:
Lionel SCALONI on his conversation with Lionel MESSI:

“I spoke with him and from that conversation he has not been called-up for the two (upcoming friendly) matches. We didn’t talk about the future, we all know what he represents to us and we will see what happens. I have a really good relationship with him and we were very clear: He would not be in this call-up, we will see for the future but everything ended well.”

Lionel SCALONI on calling up Franco VAZQUEZ:

“Like everyone knows, I took over as coach just a few days ago and we were in the middle of the U20 tournament in Valencia. Once we got here, we started putting together the list and last week we decided that Franco would be called-up. We sent out the papers to FIFA to authorize it (since VAZQUEZ has played for Italy); we are optimistic that they will give us the okay and that Franco would be able to play with the Argentina National Team. But there are things that don’t depend on us.”

On Walter SAMUEL possibly being included in the Argentina coaching staff:

“It’s a possibility that we are looking at. Still no decision has been taken. It’s obvious that we know each other, he’s a friend, but there’s nothing completely decided.”

On Sergio ROMERO:

“He’s in the list and we are looking at the possibility of him playing this weekend or at the least be available for Manchester United. We still have a week to be able to call-up another goalkeeper if he doesn’t recover. We are in contact with him, he is training but the idea is that if he’s not well, we will call-up another goalkeeper.”

What it means to coach the Argentina National Team:

“It’s a challenge, a big illusion and in these six or what ever matches we get, we will try to bring in the most number of players possible for the next coach to be able to decide and say if these matches really served for something, beyond the results. It’s a moment for these kids to be able to put on the shirt.”

On certain players:

“No player opted out or said that they did not want to come with the Argentina National Team. Everything that was decided was for the best of the National Team and to be able to bring something for the future. We know that we have to call people up for these matches. I spoke with many of the players, not all of them and they were available. We know that we need these players because we believe that we have an enormous potential. Most of them are in good form and it’s the time to call them up, looking past their ages because these kids are young.”

On future call-ups:

“It’s obvious that there are still players that I’d like to see and we have up until this week to call up more. We are convinced of what we have to prove. It’s obvious that the result counts because Argentina has to win but it’s the time for these kids to put on the shirt and convince that they can play with the National Team. We are trying to instill the idea that those who put the shirt on for the first time, don’t take it off.”

Why he decided to stay with the team after Jorge SAMPAOLI’s exit:

“I had already taken the decision to continue with the AFA and if it wasn’t possible, I would have had no problem parting ways. The possibility to continue here arose and I know the AFA and I’m here. They offered me to stay with the U20 team and after that the senior team and I am very grateful to the president because he was the person who called me to offer me this chance which I couldn’t say no to and I am happy.”

On continuing after these matches:

“I would have liked to have Pablo (AIMAR) here because we think the same way: For these six matches, we want to be able to bring in the most players possible. What will happen in the future, I don’t know. I’m here to give a hand, I’m here during an important time in Argentine football. After that, we will see what happens. I am only thinking in the National Team, in what is happening now.”

On the experience of the 2018 FIFA World Cup:

“I lived Russia like most or like all Argentine’s. A big dream to be able to get reach as far as we can and heart break for being eliminated, against the world champions. That also played a little against us because we finished second in the group and we were left with the most difficult road. It was a big experience for me as a coach but a big heart break for how it ended.”

On why he counts on young players:

“In football, you can win a match but if in the long run things aren’t done properly, it all falls apart. I think it’ll be a long road and surely it’s something which can be achieved. There’s potential, there are players in the U15, U17 levels… They are doing things well and why not think that in the future, Argentina can go back to being world champions. It’s what we want to transmit to these kids at the U20 level that at the next World Cup they will be 22 or 23 years old and that World Cup will be decided by that group age.”

Angel CORREA scores for Atletico, Alejandro GOMEZ nets twice for Atalanta, more

Angel CORREA scored for Atletico Madrid, Alejandro GOMEZ netted twice for Atalanta, Jonathan SILVA scored for Leganes and Rodrigo DE PAUL was on the mark as well.

The fine form of Angel CORREA finally resulted in a deserved goal as Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 against Valencia. The goal was Atletico’s first of the season with an assist by Antoine GRIEZMANN. Ezequiel GARAY had to be substituted off with a knock in the second half.

Fellow Argentina international Alejandro GOMEZ scored twice and had two assists for Atalanta in their 4-0 win against Frosinone. The Atalanta captain, who finished last season with nine goals in total is already on two goals in Serie A for the campaign.

Jonathan SILVA opened his account in La Liga for Leganes in their 2-1 loss to Athletic Bilbao. The former Sporting man joined Leganes on a loan deal. Both teams were coached by Argentine’s as Leganes had Mauricio PELLEGRINO on the touch line while Eduardo BERIZZO managed Athletic Bilbao.

Rodrigo DE PAUL scored and was a star figure for Udinese in their 2-2 draw against Parma. DE PAUL’s goal came off a penalty and was Udinese’s first of the match. The former Racing Club and Valencia man received positive reviews for his work rate and performance during the match.

Walter KANNEMANN of Gremio on being called to Argentina team: “I am happy”

13

Walter KANNEMANN has been excellent for Brazilian club Gremio lately and has finally received a call-up to the Argentina National Team.

Now 27, the former San Lorenzo and Atlas man has been included in interim Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI’s list for next month’s matches against Guatemala and Colombia. Speaking with Sportia, here’s what he had to say:

“I am happy for having this opportunity. I hope to be as good as possible for it. I never really thought about if this should have happened before. If it didn’t happen, I would have been another fan of the Argentina National Team.

“I try to be my bst, to contribute what I can and to help out my team mates. I’ve always played as a center back in Brazil but if I have to play as a full back, I have no problem.”

KANNEMANN won the Copa Libertadores twice, the first time in 2014 with San Lorenzo and the second coming in 2017 with Gremio.

Five draws on Saturday, Sunday in Argentina Superliga including an Olympic goal

Out of the nine matches which took place on Saturday and Sunday in the Argentina Superliga, five of them finished in draws.

Defensa y Justicia vs. Atletico Tucuman was the first match on Saturday and it finished in similar fashion to that of Newell’s and Independiente. A goal less first half meant we were treated to two goals and a red card in the second half. Ricardo NOIR scored an Olympic goal, that is to say directly from a corner kick. Alexander BARBOSA equalized for the home team from the spot with six minutes left. Guillermo ACOSTA later lost his head and was sent off in injury time for Atletico Tucuman.

Former Ajax and Nice man Dario CVITANICH scored the lone goal of the match, also from the spot, for Banfield in their 1-0 win against Gimnasia de la Plata. It was a big win for Banfield as they had lost their opening match last weekend against Rosario Central.

The second draw on Saturday came between Argentinos Juniors and Godoy Cruz. A 0-0 draw haltered Godoy Cruz’s chances of going top of the table after they won their opening match of the season. Argentinos Juniors find themselves in the bottom half of the standings in 21st position with only one point.

A frustrating start to the season continues for both River Plate and Belgrano as they drew 0-0 which means a second consecutive draw for both teams. They are now four points behind league leaders Rosario Central who picked up two wins out of two.

San Martin picked up their first win of the season and find themselves on four points following a 1-0 win against Patronato. The latter are in 22nd position with a lonely point.

In a back and forth match, Colon drew 2-2 against Tigre. Diego VIERA opened the scoring for the visitors to give Tigre a 1-0 lead. Former Argentina international and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Clemente RODRIGUEZ equalized for Colon. Just one minute later, Juan CAVALLARO restored Tigre’s lead. Javier CORREA drew Colon level for the second time in the match.

Aldosivi came from behind to win 2-1 against Huracan. Diego MENDOZA scored early on in the match for Huracan to give them a 1-0 lead. The second half saw Ivan COLMAN score for Aldosivi before Matias PISANO left it late by scoring the match winner in the 88th minute.

Former Inter man Ruben BOTTA scored in the 26th minute for San Lorenzo and Nicolas BLANDI doubled their lead against Lanus. However, Sebastian RIBAS cut San Lorenzo’s lead in half right before half time. Nicolas THALLER made it 2-2 in the 46th minute which ended up being the final score.

Lisandro LOPEZ has made it two goals in two games as he scored in Racing Club’s 2-0 win against Velez. Guillermo FERNANDEZ sealed the win late in the 83rd minute.

Monday’s matches are Boca away to Estudiantes while San Martin de Tucuman host Union. The reports for both of those matches will be up on Monday evening.
