Eleven years ago, Argentina 6 – 0 Serbia and Montenegro

Argentina 6 – 0 Serbia Montenegro was the score at the 2006 World Cup.

Eleven years ago. June 16, 2006, it’s been eleven years since that magical day in Gelsenkirchen. A day where Jose PEKERMAN’s Argentina played Serbia and Montenegro off the pitch. It was men against boys out there and the men were lead by Juan Roman RIQUELME.

The biggest scoreline at the 2006 World Cup, five different goalscorers for Argentina, three goals from all three substitutes, one goal of the tournament candidate and a ten out of ten performance.

What more can you say from a match which made a fans dream. A match which put the ghosts of the 2002 World Cup behind us.

Maxi RODRIGUEZ twice, Esteban CAMBIASSO with that goal, Hernan CRESPO with his second goal in his second match, Carlos TEVEZ with his solo goal and Lionel MESSI with his first World Cup goal.

The team was Roberto ABBONDANZIERI; Nicolas BURDISSO, Roberto AYALA, Gabriel HEINZE, Juan Pablo SORIN; Javier MASCHERANO; Luis GONZALEZ, Juan Roman RIQUELME, Maxi RODRIGUEZ; Javier SAVIOLA and Hernan CRESPO

The substitutes? Esteban CAMBIASSO with a goal, Carlos TEVEZ with a goal and Lionel MESSI with a goal.

Here are the match highlights and one RIQUELME compilation. Regarding RIQUELME, my favorite moments are at 5:40, 6:05, 7:23 and 8:40 in the compilation.

Javier PASTORE: “We depend a lot on MESSI”

16

Javier PASTORE has come out and talked about the Argentina National Team and Lionel MESSI.

Despite not being selected for the National Team, PASTORE has come out and stated that there’s no group of friends and that the team must help Lionel MESSI. Here’s what he had to say:

Javier PASTORE on the Argentina National Team:

“Those who go (to the Argentina National Team) are the best, there’s no group of friends in the National Team. That’s a big lie, it’s something they have created and we hope it will end quickly because what it does is just anger the players. The one’s who are always there are there because they are at the best teams in the world, not because they are friends with another player.”

Javier PASTORE on Lionel MESSI:

“He’s the best in the World. You have to build a team that plays football and one that facilitates his job, you can’t hope he does everything because him against 11 players, he won’t win.”

“We depend a lot on MESSI and we want him to solve everything which is wrong. Everyone has to try and help him out. Playing with him is the most beautiful thing because you give him a pass that is more or less good, just a normal pass, and you value it because it ends as a goal.”

Jorge SAMPAOLI press conference ahead of Singapore match

Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI held a press conference ahead of his team’s match against Singapore on Tuesday.

With Lionel MESSI not playing and SAMPAOLI going with fresh faces for the match against Singapore, Lucas BIGLIA has been named captain. SAMPAOLI also spoke about a number of topics. The coach commented on Mauro ICARDI, the goalkeepers and more. Here’s what he had to say:

Jorge SAMPAOLI on the match against Singapore:

“We’re going to go for it from the start of the match, the way we always will. We’ll need that for the four World Cup Qualifying matches, not just for tomorrow. The team is well, we’re still in the preparation stage after a complicated match on Friday against Brazil. We’re convinced that we’ll win.”

Jorge SAMPAOLI on the goalkeeping situation:

“The decision to play GUZMAN is to have the possibility of seeing him in action, of communicating with the back line. ROMERO has been working very well and this will give us the chance to see GUZMAN, beyond just his good performances for his club. One can’t say who will be the starting goalkeeper for the WOrld Cup Qualifiers. They’re all very good. Looking forward, it’s going to be tough to decide who starts on the pitch and not just the goalkeepers.”

Jorge SAMPAOLI on Mauro ICARDI:

“We’ve had a lot of doubts about Mauro’s participation but we are excited about him having the chance to play a match. Not just for what he can bring from an individual point of view but for the group. Even though he couldn’t play, him staying with us has given us the chance to speak with him, for him to know what we need from him. This contribution of his speaks very well of how much of a professional he is, knowing very well that he probably wouldn’t be able to play, he could have been enjoying his vacation.”

The match is at 8:00am Eastern (New York), 1:00pm in the UK on Tuesday.
