Argentina beat Brazil at the Olympics, 15 years later

On this day in 2008, Argentina defeated Brazil in the semi finals of the Olympics.

It has already been 15 years since Argentina eliminated Brazil in Beijing with two goals from Sergio Agüero and one by Juan Román Riquelme. Argentina Olympic coach Sergio Batista started the following eleven players:

Sergio Romero, Ezequiel Garay, Fabián Monzón, Pablo Zabaleta, Nicolás Pareja, Fernando Gago, Javier Mascherano, Ángel Di María, Juan Román Riquelme, Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero.

It was Sergio Romero’s first start at the Olympics as he was substituted on for Oscar Ustari against the Netherlands. Romero would keep a clean sheet at the Olympics.

The first goal came through an Angel Di Maria assist as he crossed the ball inside the penalty area and Agüero would hit it with his chest and score to give Argentina the 1-0 lead.

Lionel Messi would play a part in the second goal as he would play a pass to Ezequiel Garay and he would pass it into the penalty area and Agüero would score from close range.

Agüero would play a role in the third goal as he was taken down inside the penalty area and Argentina were awarded a penalty kick. It was Riquelme who took it and he would aim towards the middle and score to make it 3-0 for Argentina.

Alexis Mac Allister red carded in Liverpool win vs. Bournemouth

Alexis Mac Allister was red carded for Liverpool in their 3-1 win vs. Bournemouth.

Mac Allister received his first red card of his career and one that is controversial. The 24 year old went in on a challenge to win the ball but missed it and got Christie’s foot instead.

The referee deemed it a red card but one which got people talking. Gary Lineker took to Twitter/X and wrote that the red was “nonsense” and that the “referee and VAR at Anfield having a poor day.”

England FA contacting AFA for friendly vs. Argentina national team

The England FA have reportedly contacted the AFA for a friendly against the Argentina national team.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, we could have England against Argentina. According to Mark Ogden of ESPN, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham stated that setting up a match between the two countries is not a problem of money but more of a schedule problem. Bullingham was quoted as saying the following:

“There are various conversations we have had with lots of countries about friendlies against them.

“They [Argentina] are one of the countries we have spoken to at some point, but there is nothing in the pipeline for them at this stage.”

Argentina have six matches remaining this year, all of which are World Cup qualifiers. For next year, there is a FIFA window in March with no matches yet but there is the 2024 Copa America in June and July which is followed by World Cup qualifying matches in September, October and November.

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola confirms Julián Álvarez discomfort

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Julián Álvarez has some discomfort.

Guardiola spoke on Friday and revealed that the 23 year old is not fully fit and that is why he did not play more in their UEFA Cup match against Sevilla. With quotes courtesy of City_Xtra via ManCityMEN, here is what Guardiola had to say:

“Julián [Álvarez] had a problem, discomfort, otherwise he would’ve played [vs Sevilla]. He’s becoming so important and only managed to play in Greece for 15/20 minutes. Incredible penalty-taker. In terms of personality, that’s why he played…”

Álvarez was brought on for the last five minutes of their match against Sevilla on Wednesday and did play the entire match against Burlney in the Premier League.

AC Milan reportedly in advanced talks for Marco Pellegrino from Platense

AC Milan are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Marco Pellegrino from Platense.

Marco Pellegrino is wanted by AC Milan. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Italian club are in advanced talks to sign the 21 year old central defender.

A separate report by Matteo Moretto of Revelo states that Pellegrino is the defender that Milan have chosen. They will try to reach an agreement with Platense this weekend.
