Maxi Rodríguez testimonial: Lionel Messi, Gabriel Batistuta, Lionel Scaloni

Maxi Rodríguez held his testimonial match on Saturday with many invitees.

Arguably the biggest icon at the club, it was the Newell’s Legends against the Argentina Legends and even though Argentina took an early lead, it was a 7-5 win for Newell’s.

Lionel Messi made his return to the club for the first time in 14 years and scored a hat trick. It took him just four minutes to score the first goal of the match.

Messi scored three for Argentina, Maxi himself scored one for Argentina and Martín Posse all scored. For Newell’s, Gabriel Batistuta scored a penalty, Maxi scored two, Ignacio Scocco scored two, Denis Rodríguez, who is Maxi’s cousin scored one and one of Maxi’s daughters scored.

Some funny and highlighted moments of the match include Lionel Scaloni with a slide tackle and Ever Banega fouling the referee with Maxi himself giving Banega the yellow card.

Lionel Messi is back at the Newell’s Old Boys stadium and received a standing ovation.

Messi returned to Rosario and is part of the farewell match for Maxi Rodriguez at the Newell’s Old Boys stadium. This marked the first time that Messi was back in 14 years.

His status for the match was unknown as it takes place on his birthday, but as the players were in the locker room, it was announced that Messi was on his way to the stadium. Messi got out of the car holding his boots.

Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, David Beckham and many in the football world wished Lionel Messi a happy birthday on Saturday.

June 24 is a day that is remembered for many reasons in Argentina. Diego Maradona, Claudio Caniggia and Argentina eliminated Brazil from the 1990 World Cup on this date.

Maxi Rodriguez scored one of the greatest World Cup goals ever in Argentina’s win against Mexico at the 2006 World Cup. It’s the birthday of an Argentine genius, one who wore the number 10 shirt and before Lionel Messi. It’s Juan Roman Riquelme’s birthday.

And they are all worth celebrating. But June 24 is also Lionel Messi’s birthday. The birthday of the World Cup winner. The man who completed football. And many in football wished the Best player in the world a happy birthday.

The city of Rosario in Argentina which is Lionel Messi’s hometown also wished him a happy birthday. Messi replied, thanking them on Instagram.

Mbappé took to Instagram to wish Messi a happy birthday. He posted a picture of them both from the World Cup final. Here is what he posted:

“Happy birthday legend. Lionel Messi.
Wishing you the best day possible with your family and friends.
Thank you for these 2 years together in Paris, I learned a lot from you as a player, partner, opponent and man.
For that alone I am thankful.

Another one of Messi’s former team mates wished him a happy birthday. Neymar posed a picture of them both at PSG with the caption “Feliz cumple amigo”.

David Beckham, part owner of Inter Miami, Messi’s next club, posted on Instagram writing “Happy birthday my friend, special year ahead”.

Manchester United’s Spanish Twitter page even tweeted out a picture of Lisandro Martinez and Lionel Messi writing:

“Licha and the birthday boy”.

Lionel Messi spoke about what has changed since winning the World Cup and the World Cup itself.

Messi has completed football. There isn’t a trophy with the Argentina national team or in European football he has not won. And the best player got his crowning moment on December 18, 2022 when he lifted the World Cup trophy.

The Argentine gave an interview to Bein Sports and a snippet of it was released on Friday. On Saturday, the interview was released. Here is what he had to say when asked about the World Cup itself and the match against Saudi Arabia:

“Starting off the first match that way was one of the keys. It was a hard hit for us. From there, we started to play in a different way because we knew that any mistake could result in us being out.

“We all believed that it was going to be the easiest match in the group and it was the opposite. Seeing it today with everythnig that happened, it was a blow at the right time and it suited us well.”

“In my day to day, my life or training, absolutely nothing has changed for me being a world champion. The only thing I can say is that we have one more star in the history of World Cups. Nothing is missing. I got everything.”

Lionel Messi spoke about his time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi gave an interview to Bein Sports which is set to be released on Saturday but a snippet of the interview has been released. Messi commented about his time in Paris with Paris Saint-Germain and the relationship with the fans. Here is what he had to say:

“At first, my arrival to Paris was great. I received a lot of support as I have said many times, but then people started to treat me differently.

“There was a break with a good part of the public. Of course it was not my intention. But these are things that have already happened with Mbappe and Ney, too.

“I keep the memory of all of those people who respected me and I respected them since I arrived. I keep the memory of Neymar and Kylian who supported me from the beginning…”

The full interview is expected to be released on Saturday.
