Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about not playing European teams in the friendly matches in March.

Lionel Scaloni spoke at a press conference on Thursday about the team, the young players and Lionel Messi not being with the team. He also commented on playing against El Salvador and not playing any European teams. Here is what he had to say:

“El Salvador is a good team with a clear idea. Our idea of the game is going to be similar to the one that we have had.

“Initially, we had signed with China, that was for two important opponents (Nigeria and Ivory Coast). They didn’t happen due to reasons that I don’t know and I don’t get involved.

“Under no circumstances do I disrespect the opponents we are going to face now (El Salvador and Costa Rica). They are good for us, they have their difficulties.

“We became World champions almost without competing against any European opponents. Football has this: If you compete against the best, it does not guarantee that you will reach the competitions well and if you play with rivals from another entity, it does not guarantee anything either. The important thing is the idea and what we want to work on.”

“We are all strong and eager to continue. The most important thing was to reinforce and for the team to know what we want from them.

“We have to keep working the same way. This job and this place does not allow you to be even 90 percent, I talked to everyone I had to talk to.

“We are clear about the path to take. It’s not even to compete again after winning everything.

“We came to compete, with our guard up, always when playing with this shirt, the games are important.

“We continue to evolve and try that the best play. There are many players and the final choice is never easy. All the boys who are here have a chance to play at the Copa.”

Scaloni also spoke about Lionel Messi:

“During this trip, I spoke to Leo (Messi), I went to his house and he received me very well. I spoke to a lot of players who have been with us for a long time and with whom I thought I had to talk to. I trust them a lot and I love them a lot.

“Now that Leo (Messi) is not here with us, we have to be a team more than ever because there is no player to replace him, it’s the truth.”

About Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Buonanotte:

“They are here because they have a chance to be at the Copa America, that is obvious. They are playing at a good level in an important competition like the Premier League.”
