Lionel Messi wins record eighth Ballon d’Or award

Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for a record eighth time.

Messi continues to make and break his own records. The Best player in the world lifted the award on Monday in Paris for last year’s incredible season, most notably at the World Cup.

At 36 years of age, Messi lifted the Ballon d’Or becoming the oldest player to do so. He also becomes the first player to win a Ballon d’Or in three different decades.

Having won it in 2009, he went on to win it three years in a row from 2011 to 2013 before winning it in 2016, 2019 and the last time in 2021 after winning the Copa America. While he won Ligue 1 with PSG, his greatest achievement came at the World Cup.

Messi scored seven goals at the 2022 World Cup while being named the best player in Qatar and winning the World Cup with the Argentina national team.

Emiliano Martinez wins Yashin award for best goalkeeper in the world

Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin award for the best goalkeeper in the world at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Martinez won the trophy which honors him as the best goalkeeper in world football. The Best goalkeeper in the world had this to say:

“I’m full of emotion to have won this. Without my teammates at Aston Villa and in the Argentina national team, this wouldn’t have been possible – this moment in my career.”

The Argentine won the award with Ederson of Brazil in second place and Yassine Bono of Morocco in third. Here are the rankings:

Argentine players set to be at the Ballon d’Or ceremony

Four Argentine players are set to be at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Lionel Messi is expected to win his eighth Ballon d’Or trophy on Monday and there are four Argentine players who will also be at the ceremony in Paris.

Emiliano Martínez will also be in attendance as he is nominated for the Yashin award. Julián Álvarez is expected to be in attendance, having won the World Cup with the Argentina national team and the treble with Manchester City.

Lautaro Martínez won the World Cup with the Argentina national team. With Inter, he won the Coppa Italia while also making the Champions League final.

Matías Soulé scored two goals for Frosinone in their 4-3 loss vs. Cagliari.

Soulé had two early goals to give Frosinone the 2-0 lead in a match with saw Cagliari score twice in injury time to win. Soule intercepted a pass near Cagliari’s penalty area and would score from close range to give them the 1-0 lead.

The Argentine would receive the ball outside of the penalty area and dribble passed a defender and score to give them the 2-0 lead going into half time. Frosinone would take a 3-0 lead but eventually lose 4-3 late in the match.

The 20 year old has five goals and one assist in eight Serie A matches with four of his goals coming in the last three matches.

Facundo Medina scored his first goal for Lens in their 4-0 win vs. Nantes.

Medina was part of the entire build up to his goal, playing a one-two before scoring from the edge of the penalty area to give Lens the 2-0 lead. The 24 year old has taken part in nine of the 10 matches in Ligue 1 for Lens, having missed one due to a yellow card suspension.

The Argentine made headlines on social media with a clip where he was jokingly telling a reporter that “the French have been broken since the World Cup final”.
