The Argentine confirmed that he will not play against Ecuador in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier. Speaking to the media in the mixed zone after the match, Messi was asked about if he would play in the next World Cup qualifiers. Here is what he had to say:

“It’s a natural question. Due to my age, my time is running out. There’s still a long way to go before the next qualifiers. I can confirm that I won’t be there. Now I’m taking each day as it comes. I hope to have a good preseason.

“I never said whether or not I would make it to the World Cup, I simply said that I was going to take each day as it came. I always said that, given my age, the most logical or natural thing was that I wouldn’t make it.”
