Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni on Argentina’s World Cup draw vs. Mexico, Poland, Saudi Arabia

8

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni commented on Argentina’s World Cup draw where they are in the same grup as Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia.

Lionel Scaloni was in Doha, Qatar for the 2022 World Cup draw. Argentina have been drawn in Group C against Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland. Speaking after the draw to TyC Sports, here is what he had to say:

“We have to accept what has been drawn for us. It’s a group with difficult teams. Mexico is an opponent that we know, difficult. Poland played well and won against Sweden and Saudi Arabia had a very good qualifying campaign. We respect everyone. We believe we can do well, we could have a good group stage but it’s maximum respect.”

Scaloni also spoke about Mexico, a team they were set to play in a friendly match in September:

“It was the team with which we were pretty sure about and now we have to look elsewhere. But there is no doubt that it’s not an important thing about friendlies, it’s not an important thing to play against European rivals. We know very well how we want to play.

“Logically, I would have liked to prepare for the World Cup by playing and if it’s not possible against opponents of that level, we will look for others.

“Historically, they have been a difficult opponent for us at World Cups. I suffered in 2006 as a player, they played a great match and we won in extra time with the goal by Maxi Rodriguez. It was a complicated match and they are a complicated opponent.”

Regaring Poland:

“They are a national team with good players, known and world class.”

In regards to the fans:

“For them to be calm and to enjoy the World Cup, which is the most important, because it’s played every four years. Hopefully it will be with Argentina until the final. That they enjoy this national team and the kids that play for this shirt. Every one together, surely we will be stronger.”

Emiliano Dibu Martínez comments on Argentina’s World Cup group draw

Emiliano Dibu Martínez spoke about Argentina’s World Cup group draw for Qatar.

Dibu Martínez and the Argentina national team have been drawn in Group C at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. They will play their opening match against Saudi Arabia and their second against Mexico with their third match against Poland.

Martínez stated what the players of the Argentina national team think of the draw. Speaking in an interview with Ole, here is what he had to say:

“Everyone in the group is happy. It’s nice to think of what is to come. Still, we are taking it one match at a time.

“There comes a moment where you don’t know if the rival picked is good or bad. I got more nervous than in a game. There is a lot of anxiety about it being my first World Cup. It’s going to be a f****d up group but a nice one.

“I don’t remember watching Saudi Arabia, so maybe I can watch them now. The other day I saw Poland and we might play Mexico in a friendly match.

“If you don’t win the first match, you’re full of questions. Some raise their level in the group stage. At a World Cup, you have to beat them all. We have to finish first in the group.”

He was also asked about a Whatsapp group and mentioned what Ángel Di María told him during the Copa America:

“It happened after the Copa, we were all sending each other pictures of where each one of us was, if we were having a barbecue with the family or those things. The group on Whatsapp is called Copa America, we put it for the group and it stayed like that. Paredes put it together for a barbecue and it stayed.

“Di María told me I was sick after the match against Colombia. Ángel didn’t understand how I could be talking to a Colombian player while he was shooting, hehe.”

Sergio Agüero won’t join Argentina national team for World Cup, Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez

17

Sergio Agüero will not remain with the Argentina national team for the 2022 Qatar World Cup as he spoke about Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez.

Agüero was set to be part of the Argentina national team coaching staff for the World Cup. He, along with Lionel Scaloni and AFA president Chiqui Tapia had spoken about it. However, speaking in an interview with ESPN on Thursday, Agüero stated that will not be happening. Here is what he had to say:

“I spoke to Chiqui (AFA president Tapia), I was clear. My idea is to come (to the World Cup) to enjoy it, as a fan. I have a good relationship with everyone but I don’t see myself being with the coch staff and the boys on a day-to-day basis.

“I get along very well with my team mates and I want to continue like this. What they ask for is a different role and I’m not here to do that.:

He was also asked about Lionel Messi and winning the Copa America:

“The title we were all waiting for but above all, him. It gave an extra joy to everyone. Especially to him. He took that weight off him that he had for so many years of wanting to win a title with the national team. It shows on the pitch, the joy, the people… He enjoys it much more.”

In regards to Julián Álvarez:

“He is mature because he is playing at River. I mean… I think that over time he will continue to learn things, like his finishing, why he didn’t kick before or why he didn’t touch it before… That’s going to happen to him all the time.

“The player learns in matches. But it’s already noticeable that he has a maturity and is learning a little more each time. City bought him for a reason.”
