Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga has joined Fulham on a free transfer.

Paulo Gazzaniga will be playing in the EFL Championship for the 2021-2022 season as his time with Tottenham comes to an end. Gazzaniga, who spent the 2021 season on loan with Elche in Spain, joins on a two year contract.

The 29 year old goalkeeper has represented the Argentina national team one, back in 2018 in a 2-0 win vs. Mexico. He has spent most of his playing career in England, having played for Gillingham, Southampton and Tottenham.

Facundo Medina scores for Argentina in 1-0 win vs. Egypt at Tokyo Olympics

Facundo Medina gave Argentina a life line at the Olympics as he scored in their 1-0 win vs. Egypt.

Having lost their opening match at the Olympics 2-0 vs. Australia, Fernando Batista’s team knew they had to bounce back with a win. A loss would have meant a possible elimination from the tournament before even playing their third group stage match.

Fernando Batista went with the following eleven:

Ledesma
De La Fuente
Perez
Medina
Bravo
Payero
Vera
De La Vega
Mac ALlister
Barco
Gaich

A slight change from the eleven which started vs. Australia as Ortega was shown a red card in that match, while Colombatto and Valenzuela were also dropped for this one.

Argentina were applying the pressure from the first minute and Adolfo Gaich came close to opening the scoring. A shot from outside of the penalty area but his effort hit the woordwork. Despite the early pressure, a stubborn defensive Egypt were able to keep Argentina out.

Egypt nearly took the lead themselves had it not been for Ledesma who pulled off a great save from close range. The first half would end score less.

The second half would finally bring Argentina’s first goal of the Olympics. What looked to be a shot or a cross by Mac Allister into the penalty area hit the post as the ball fell to Medina who scored to give Argentina the 1-0 lead and the three points.

Here are the current standings:

Spain: 4 points
Australia: 3 points
Argentina: 3 points
Egypt: 1 point

Coach Mauricio Pochettino extends his contract with PSG until June 2023

56

Last Friday, Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino extended his contract with Paris Saint-Germain until June 2023.

Speaking with the press, Pochettino showed his happiness about the renewal. This is what he had to say:

“I am really happy. For us, it is very important to feel the support and trust of the club. We will do everything possible to make the fans proud of us. 20 years ago I was the captain, and now I am the coach. It is a dream come true.”

In addition, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi also spoke with the press about the deal:

“We are happy that Mauricio is continuing his adventure at PSG. He was captain 20 years ago; he shares the club’s values, ambition, and vision for the future.”

As in previous years, Paris Saint-Germain’s main goal is winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time. That is what Mauricio Pochettino will try to reach next season with his players. The Parisian club has already signed some good names with that objective in mind: Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Danilo Pereira.

Pochettino arrived in PSG in January of 2021, replacing Thomas Tuchel, and signed until June of 2022. This means that he still had one year left on his contract.

In terms of results, his first months coaching PSG were normal, taking into consideration the club’s potential. Although lifting the French Super Cup by beating 2-1 Olympique de Marseille, and winning the French Cup, defeating AS Monaco 2-0 in the final, they finished in second place of the Ligue 1, one point below LOSC Lille. They also reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals, where they lost both legs vs. Manchester City.

With three Argentine’s within the squad (Leandro Paredes, Ángel Di María, and Mauro Icardi), Mauricio Pochettino will go in search of a great 2021/2022 season with Paris Saint-Germain.

Giuliano Simeone makes Atletico Madrid debut, assists in win

Giuliano Simeone made his Atletico Madrid debut as he provided an assist in their 1-1 but penalty shootout win vs. Numancia.

Only 18 years old, the left winger found himself being coached by his father, the legendary Diego Simeone. It was a high ball from deep into the Numancia penalty area as Simeone fought with the defender. Winning the ball and with the goalkeeper approaching, he dove in and passed the ball to Mario Soriano who scored the open net.

The youngest of Diego Simeone’s sons, Giuliano has an older brother, Giovanni, who is 26 years old, playing with Cagliari in Serie A.
