Copa America knock out changes, no extra time, only in final

Changes have been made to the format of the Copa America knock out stages.

The format will be reverted back to the 2015 and 2016 editions. That means in case of a draw in the quarter finals and semi finals of a Copa America match, the game would go straight to penalties. There would not be extra time if a match were to be tied after 90 minutes.

However, extra time would be available in the final. That means in the final, if a match is tied, it would go to extra time, followed by a penalty shootout if necessary.

This was not the case in 2019 where extra time was available in the semi finals and final but not the quarter finals.

Should Argentina vs. Ecuador be drawn after 90 minutes, that means the match would go to penalties.

Lucas Alario out of the Argentina Olympic team due to injury

Lucas Alario is out of the Argentina Olympic team due to injury.

Alario, who was initially selected for the Copa America squad by coach Lionel Scaloni, had to be dropped from the squad because of an injury. After being dropped from the squad, Argentina U23 coach Fernando Batista selected the 28 year old for the Olympics.

Initially one of three overage players in that team, the official Argentina Twitter account have stated that he is out of the team due to an injury.

Lionel Scaloni’s doubts in Argentina lineup for quarter-finals vs. Ecuador

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has some doubts regarding the starting eleven he will choose for next Saturday’s game vs. Ecuador in the quarter-finals of the Copa America. Some players seem to have their place secured for the next match, while in other positions the starters are still uncertain.

Per a report by TyC Sports, Emiliano Martínez would be the goalkeeper, not Armani, who played last game vs. Bolivia. Martínez was rested in the last match to protect him from receiving his second yellow card in the competition.

Regarding the defense, Nahuel Molina would play as right-back, while Nicolás Tagliafico and Marcos Acuña fight for a place in the left-back position. Nicolás Otamendi seems to be another that has his place secured, whereas Cristian Romero, who is recovering from a knock on his knee and Germán Pezzella appears to be a doubt for now. While the belief is that Romero should be good to go, he might not be fully fit. Should he not be ready, it would be Pezzella in his spot.

In the midfield, Lionel Scaloni will have to decide between Leandro Paredes or Guido Rodríguez. On the other hand, Rodrigo De Paul would be a starter, while Giovani Lo Celso and Alejandro Gómez fight for the same spot.

The only doubt in the attack is whether Nicolás González or Ángel Di María, who is also recovering from a knock on his knee, will start as left-wing. Lionel Messi would play as right-wing and Lautaro Martínez would play as striker.

Here, Argentina’s lineup to play Ecuador:

Cristiano Romero, Angel Di Maria to be fit for Argentina quarter final match

Cristian Romero and Angel Di Maria are both expected to be fit for Argentina’s quarter final match on Saturday.

Both Romero and Di Maria were left out of the Argentina squad for their 4-1 win vs. Bolivia on Monday due to fitness issues. Per reports coming out of Argentina, both will be available for Saturday’s quarter final match.

Di Maria had a knock on his knee which kept him out of the win vs. Bolivia while Romero, who also had a knock to his knee, missed the match.

Argentina play Ecuador on Saturday in a quarter final match of the Copa America.

On this day in 1986, Argentina won their second World Cup

On this day 35 years ago, Argentina won their second FIFA World Cup in Mexico 1986, after beating West Germany 3-2 in the final. With Diego Maradona as the leader on the pitch, and coach Carlos Bilardo commanding from the sidelines, the national team would reach eternal glory.

On June 29 of 1986, Argentina would face West Germany at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City with an attendance of 114,600, which remains to this day the second largest World Cup final attended (only behind the 1950 final, at the Estadio Maracana, Brazil).

Jose Luis Brown would score with his head to give Argentina the lead after a precise cross from Jorge Burruchaga, a cross that Germany goalkeeper Harald Schumacher was not able to intercept.

In the second half, Argentina would go on to extend the difference to two goals when Jorge Valdano found himself face to face with Germany’s goalkeeper. A class finish, opening his right foot at the last moment, placing the ball at the far post.

Argentina was up by two with 30 minutes left and it seemed that the team was heading towards a comfortable victory. The second ever World Cup finals win in the history of the national team was closer than ever. The players just needed to hold on.

But Germany would score the 1-2 at the 74’ and tied up the game at 2 at the 82’.

Fortunately, Argentina’s desperation didn’t last long as three minutes after Germans drew level, Jorge Burruchaga scored Argentina’s winning goal, following a memorable run.

Argentina’s captain and legend, Diego Maradona, lifted the trophy with immense joy. Argentina’s center-back during that tournament, Oscar Ruggeri, told many times afterwards that it was impossible to take the trophy from Maradona’s hands as he was carrying it all along the fly back to Argentina.

Oscar Ruggeri, today working on the Argentine TV, recently affirmed that the players and coaching staff from that historic team are in a Whatsapp group called “Champions 86”, where they are all still in touch.
