Nicolas Otamendi gives Argentina press conference before quarter final match

Nicolas Otamendi spoke to the press prior to the team’s quarter final match.

Otamendi is expected to start for Argentina vs. Ecuacor in Saturday’s quarter final match. An experienced defender, Otamendi spoke to the press on Friday. Here’s what he had to say:

“The most important thing from a leader is being able to give information to the younger players, transmitting what it means to play for the Argentina national team.

“We are very focused on this Copa. We have a very good group, the 28 that are here feel important and we don’t relax.”

Regarding the defending:

“A solid defense gives you a better attack. With the potential in attack that we have, it’s important to give them (the attackers) some security for them to be able to attack with a peace of mind. We have to try and have order in defense to take advantage of the potential we have in midfield and up the pitch.

“We have to stay focused for 90 minutes and adjust details. Because of one detail, you could be eliminated and that is why we must be focused.”

On the Argentina team and the Copa America:

“We are taking on this new challenge with great enthusiasm. In every tournament, we have to think that we are here to win it and that’s what we are looking for.

“This shirt demands commitment and to win tournaments. One always wants to leave a mark on his country. We will try to do our best to keep moving forward.

“The group is very important when it comes to a long tournament. We are all available for the coach. We have to push ourselves for the training sessions to be good, to make it difficult for the coach to pick his team.

“Our mentality is to take this match by match. We have to give our all to continue advancing.”

At 4:30 PM, the whole squad will be heading to the Ezeiza airport, which is just 8 minutes away from Argentina’s training center. The estimated arrival to the city of Goiânia is 8:30 PM today and they will all have dinner at 9 PM.

Atalanta announce signing of Argentina goalkeeper Juan Musso from Udinese

Juan Musso has signed with Atalanta as the club made it official on Friday.

Atalanta announced the signing of the 27 year old goalkeeper from Udinese. Having joined Udinese from Racing Club in 2018, Musso played over 100 matches for the club and become one of the top goalkeepers in the league.

Presently with the Argentina national team at the Copa America, Musso appears to eb the fourth choice goalkeeper behind Emiliano Martinez, Franco Armani and Agustin Marchesin.

He has signed a four year deal with the club.

Atalanta reportedly asked Cristian Romero not to play Argentina quarter final game

Atalanta have reportedly asked Cristian Romero not to play in Argentina’s quarter final game.

Per several reports coming out of Argentina, Cristian Romero’s club Atalanta have contacted the player asking him not to take part in the quarter final match on Saturday. Romero is not yet fully fit and Atalanta don’t want him to risk the injury and potentially aggrevate it.

As we reported a few days ago, should Romero not be fit enough to start the match, it would be Pezzella who would replace him in the back line. However, per the reports, Romero wants to play the quarter final match on Saturday.

This would not be the first time an Argentine has received a player during a tournament from his club asking him not to play. Angel Di Maria infamously received a letter from Real Madrid prior to the final of the 2014 World Cup. They asked Di Maria not to play and reportedly even threatened legal action.
