Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI’s press conference following the latest squad list is an interesting one, with names like Carlos TEVEZ, Paulo DYBALA and Fernando GAGO all mentioned.

With the coach releasing the latest squad on Thursday, the big talk was the exclusion of two European based heavyweights, Mauro ICARDI and Paulo DYBALA. Coach Jorge SAMPAOLI commented on it all. Here’s what he had to say:

Jorge SAMPAOLI’s press conference

“I don’t think it’s ideal to play against Spain, Italy and Israel and (AFA) president TAPIA already knows my opinion about it. I would have preferred that the game against Israel be played in Barcelona, but we have to comply. TAPIA told me that they are unavoidable commitments.

“We’re looking to call-up a right sided defender from the domestic league. If necessary, on current form, Carlos TEVEZ will be evaluated, just like a lot of other players.”

Jorge SAMPAOLI on Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup

“Most of the players on the list are starters with their teams. Heading into the World Cup and with the little time we have, we have to know that incorporating players that don;t have a connection with the rest is a risk. We are always analyzing the players called-up and how they can be used at the World Cup.

“The certainties I have in regards to the list is 80%, it’s the other 20% that’s the most difficult. We have to build something that fills us with enthusiasm. We are convinced that we can have a great World Cup. Nothing can distract me of my goal which is to call-up the best players and put together the best performance for the Argentina National Team. We are analyzing very closely every player. We want the best players to be there, the one’s with the most experience.”

“That MASCHERANO is able to play 90 minutes every Sunday to me is better. A World Cup is not easy and he has experience.”

Jorge SAMPAOLI on DYBALA, ICARDI, HIGUAIN

“DYBALA, GOMEZ and ICARDI are players that we know very well. We want to see others to continue to compare them. These two matches won’t define anything for anyone. Our job as coaches is that the team’s connection with MESSI is the best it can be. We have to take advantage of Leo. Paulo DYBALA is an extremely valuable player. He’s coming off an injury and we think it’s better for him to regain his form with his club and not be on the list. I saw a more mature HIGUAIN. The players give you a certainty that if put together, we could have a great World Cup.

“We won’t be playing for points but playing to progress as a collective unit that will give us more security. We will have opponents who are tough up front.

“I watched Fernando GAGO. I saw in him a very respected player with a lot of enthusiasm. Lautaro MARTINEZ is a player that we’ve been following for some time. His present form allows us to analyze his possible call-up. PAVON is a player that is part of our process and to us appears to be important in the way we see the play. The local based players we are going to keep watching. I’m watching them all.”

Jorge SAMPAOLI on Argentina’s goalkeepers

“We have been evaluating the goalkeeping situation for some time. I think that looking at someone who has never been called-up to get incorporated with the little time we have, is difficult. Sergio ROMERO is a player that when asked to play, he does it in an acceptable way. We talked with his coach and we hope he has more minutes ahead of the World Cup.”

Gonzalo HIGUAIN in, DYBALA and ICARDI left out

Gonzalo HIGUAIN makes his comback to the Argentina team, having been left out of the last three squads (the four final World Cup Qualifiers as well as the two friendly matches). With Mauro ICARDI and Paulo DYBALA left out, it could be an indication that Lautaro MARTINEZ would receive his first Argentina call while Cristian PAVON of Boca would continue to be included.

Interesting to note that Marcos ACUNA and Eduardo SALVIO have been put under the defenders list with Javier MASCHERANO put under midfielders.

The domestic based squad will be announced at a later date with Lautaro MARTINEZ and Cristian PAVON expected to make the list.

Willy CABALLERO, Ramiro FUNES MORI and a few other names are expected to make the Argentina National Team squad on Thursday with Mauro ICARDI and Paulo DYBALA both missing out.

It’s going to be an eventful Thursday for a number of Argentinian players and uneventful for two others, if the latest reports are to be believed. According to TyC Sports, Chelsea goalkeeper Willy CABALLERO is expected to make the Argentina squad. CABALLERO won’t be the only London based or even English based player to make the team with Ramiro FUNES MORI, Marcos ROJO and Manuel LANZINI all rumored to be making the list.

CABALLERO, an U20 World Cup winner back in 2001 with Argentina, has yet to play for his country at senior level. Ramiro FUNES MORI has been sidelined for nearly a year, having picked up an injury in Argentina’s World Cup Qualifying loss to Bolivia last year. Marcos ROJO has not been included in the Argentina team as well for some time due to his injury which came early last year as well while playing for Manchester United in the Europa League. Manuel LANZINI, who has been in and out of the team under coach Jorge SAMPAOLI is rumored to be back in this time around.

The big news is that both Mauro ICARDI and Paulo DYBALA are strongly rumored to be left out of this squad which will play against Italy and Spain in March. The two (for various reasons) have not been in the best of forms (with DYBALA having been injured) and SAMPAOLI will drop them come the list on Thursday.

As we reported a few days ago, Paulo DYBALA was expected to be left out of the team and with Lautaro MARTINEZ in fantastic form, we could see the Racing Club youngster in the squad at DYBALA’s expense.

A Lautaro MARTINEZ hattrick for Racing Club sealed a 4-2 victory against Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores.

Two goals in the first half and a thrid in the second gave Lautaro MARTINEZ his first Copa Libertadores hattrick in his first Copa Libertadores match. Not only one of the hottest prospects in Argentina but of South America, MARTINEZ’s value continues to grow and the week can get better for the Racing youngster.

With Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI once more in attendance, MARTINEZ gave the coach three more reasons to call him up for Argentina on Thursday. SAMPAOLI will announce his list on Thursday and with strong rumors that Paulo DYBALA of Juventus missing out, it could mean that MARTINEZ make it into the team.

A beautiful touch after a lovely cross sent into the area in the 14th minute gave Racing the 1-0 lead. Cruzeiro drew level in the 30th minute with a header to make it 1-1 before they hit the post in the 32nd minute.

Lautaro MARTINEZ gave Racing the lead right before the end of the half when the club from Avellaneda played a short free kick and MARTINEZ slotted the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half, the Brazilian’s came close to drawing level hitting the crossbar. With 18 minutes on the clock in the second half, MARTINEZ completed his hattrick off a flying header to give Racing a 3-1 lead. Cruzeiro pulled one back off a fantastic free kick. Racing eventually made it 4-2 with SOLARI scoring the final goal of the match.

Lautaro MARTINEZ hattrick

MARTINEZ is the latest 20 year told to score a hattrick in the Copa Libertadores. The last 20 year old to do it? A certain NEYMAR in 2012 against Internacional.

The team will play a match against Israel on June 9 in Tel Aviv.

Coach Jorge SAMAPOLI and his men will be based in Barcelona (while also training at FC Barcelona’s facilities) prior to flying off to Russia. SAMPAOLI wanted to stay based in Barcelona and play a friendly match at the Camp Nou, however there were change of plans and the team will make the 3 hour flight to Tel Aviv to play the match.

Argentina’s opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup will be on June 16 against Iceland, meaning the match comes exactly one week prior to their World Cup kick off.
