Gonzalo HIGUAIN, Ever BANEGA, Lucas OCAMPOS and Franco VAZQUEZ all scored for their clubs in the UEFA Europa League.

AC Milan got their UEFA Europa League campaign off with a 1-0 win away from home courtesy of a goal by their number 9 Gonzalo HIGUAIN. The former Juventus man’s shot deflected off of the opposing defender and went passed the goalkeeper.

Ever BANEGA scored twice, one was a fantastic free kick and the other a penalty kick while Franco VAZQUEZ added one himself in Sevilla’s 5-1 win against Standard Liege.

Lucas OCAMPOS scored for Marseille in their 2-1 loss against Eintracht in the UEFA Europa League. With just three minutes on the clock, Argentine Lucas OCAMPOS opened the scoring for Marseille to give them the 1-0 lead.

Argentina Throwback Thursday: Diego MILITO’s multi-goal performance vs. Uruguay

0

Inter legend Diego MILITO is the focus of this week’s Argentina Throwback Thursday as we look at his only multi-goal performance in a sky blue and white shirt.

While personally not having the best of international careers as he was often overlooked for different number 9’s, Diego MILITO was still a lethal finisher. On July 16, 2003, Argentina hosted Uruguay in a friendly match which ended in a 2-2 draw but MILITO scored both goals for his country. Here was Argentina’s starting eleven for the match:

Franco COSTANZO
Daniel DIAZ
Gabriel MILITO
Clemente RODRIGUEZ
Andres D’ALESSANDRO
Luis GONZALEZ
Federico INSUA
Javier MASCHERANO
Cesar DELGADO
Diego MILITO
Federico DOMINGUEZ

Both of MILITO’s goals came in the first 9 minutes of the match. Diego scored in the 5th minute before Ernesto CHEVANTON equalized for Uruguay and MILITO made it 2-1 in the 9th minute. Diego MILITO’s brother, Gabriel, scored an own goal which lead to Uruguay equalizing.

MILITO scored a total of 4 goals in his Argentina career in 25 matches.

Last week’s Argentina Throwback Thursday saw Argentina dominating Chile in a 2002 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

Rumored names to make next month’s Argentina squad, Nicolas OTAMENDI, more

82

There’s been a change of plans in Lionel SCALONI’s call-up list for Argentina’s trip to Saudi Arabia next month.

Initially, goalkeeper Esteban ANDRADA of Boca Juniors was expected to make the Argentina team along with Sergio ROMERO of Manchester United and Franco ARMANI of River Plate. This would have meant that Real Sociedad’s Geronimo RULLI (who made his debut in Argentina’s 3-0 win against Guatemala) would miss out.

However, during Boca’s 2-0 win against Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores, ANDRADA picked up an injury which would reportedly rule him out for about two months. This would likely open the door once more for RULLI to get another chance with the Argentina National Team.

The one rumored name which at this point looks almost like a sure bet to be recalled to the squad is Manchester City’s Nicolas OTAMENDI. The defender sat out the last set of friendly matches.

Gabriel MERCADO of Sevilla is also another one who is expected to make the team. He was initially in Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI’s list for the matches against Guatemala and Colombia but he, along with Eduardo SALVIO, had to miss out due to injury.

There’s still a question mark on Angel DI MARIA as he could make the list but there is still a possibility that he misses out. SCALONI is reportedly happy with what he saw from Gonzalo MARTINEZ, Franco CERVI and Exequiel PALACIOS, which would make DI MARIA’s inclusion a little more difficult.

Lionel SCALONI will announce his Argentina squad on Friday.

Nicolas TAGLIAFICO scores twice, including wonder goal for Ajax in Champions League

Argentina international Nicolas TAGLIAFICO scored twice, one of which was a wonder goal for Ajax in their 3-0 win against AEK in the Champions League.

In his debut match in the Champions League, Argentina’s Nicolas TAGLIAFICO did not disappoint as he scored twice, the first goal of the match and the last one. The first one was a finish any number 9 would be proud of. Similar to Marcos ROJO’s goal for Argentina against Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, a side footed finish by TAGLIAFICO gave Ajax the 1-0 lead.

TAGLIAFICO’s second goal, the third of the match, was a wonder strike. In an advanced position, TAGLIAFICO lifted the ball and beat the goalkeeper to finish it off in style. An incredible match by the left back.

Nicolas TAGLIAFICO joins Lionel MESSI and Mauro ICARDI as the Argentine players to have scored in the Champions League this season.

Lionel MESSI not expected to make Argentina squad for the rest of the year

Lionel MESSI is not expected to make the Argentina squad for the rest of the year, this per several reports.

While there were rumors last week that the Argentina and FC Barcelona captain would make the Argentina squad for next month’s matches in Saudi Arabia. However, a few reports have come out today stating that the number 10 will not be included in Lionel SCALONI’s squad when it gets announced this Friday.

The Argentina coach is expected to speak with MESSI at the FIFA Best gala on September 24 to discuss his future with the Argentina team.
