Lautaro MARTINEZ and Mauro ICARDI score in Inter draw against Zenit

There were plenty of Argentine players on display but only two scored as Inter drew 3-3 against Zenit.

Lautaro MARTINEZ and Mauro ICARDI will form a formidable partnership if these early beginnings are anything to go by. The Inter captain scored Inter’s second of the match as the goalkeeper went the wrong way off a penalty as ICARDI gave his team the lead.

In the 65th minute, Lautaro MARTINEZ was substituted on for ICARDI and it took him just 10 minutes to make his mark. With just over 15 minutes left in the match, Lautaro drew his new club level with a predatory like finish from inside the penalty area.

For Zenit, Leandro PAREDES, Matias KRANEVITTER and Sebastian DRIUSSI all played for the Russian club.

Benjamin GARRE from Argentina made his debut for Manchester City in a 1-0 pre-season friendly loss to Borussia Dortmund.

With Manchester City coach Pep GUARDIOLA being unable to count on Sergio AGUERO and Nicolas OTAMENDI as they have yet to rejoin the team following the World Cup, there was still one Argentine representative.

Despite losing 1-0 to a Mario GOTZE goal, Pep gave the 18 year old winger his debut. The positive news for Argentina fans is Pep’s track record not only in integrative youth players into his teams but also giving them full confidence and making them grow as a player.

He is the grandson of Oscar GARRE, World Cup winner in 1986 with Argentina.

Matias ALMEYDA: “Argentina hasn’t had an identity for years”

Former Argentine midfielder Matias ALMEYDA spoke about the his desire to manage to National Team and also on other issues, in a recent interview with TyC Sports.

“Some of us would go swimming just to join the National Team. I have a great passion for our country, for the National Team. I have strong desire to contribute”.

He was quick to remind that it will take time and a lot needs to be done.

“I believe we need to implement a project. We have great players, obviously there are some good replacements too. Problem is, Argentina hasn’t had an identity or a game plan for years”.

“The Argentina team have to be a combative team. It’s what we tried to do at Banfield; to have a process and to train. For me, the style is simple: Everyone runs, everyone plays.

On the challenges of managing  the current group of Argentine players.

“There are no such thing as a difficult groups to manage. I like to treat everyone equally. Even the players who don’t like you can make a differences. If you work together as a team, you can empower (Lionel) MESSI”.

On what he felt about Argentina’s performance at the World Cup in Russia.

“Argentina arrived at the World Cup the same way just as how it left. We have stop expecting for MESSI to save us every time”.

He also went to question about the team’ selection.

“I thought it was very weird to see Argentina play the most important matches at the World Cup without a number 9 (striker). We have the best strikers in the world and yet we choose play without one.”

Cesar MENOTTI of Argentina: “It made me want to grab a revolver and kill them”

The AFA recently rolled out a plan to buy training facility in Marbella, Spain that will be used to house the Argentine national team & develop European based players. This idea didn’t go down well with 1978 World Cup winning manager, Cesar Menotti. In an interview with TyC Sport, El Flaco didn’t hold back what he had to say.

“The AFA bought a piece of property in Marbella in hoping they can find the next MESSI when the clubs here do not even have running water. And who bought this mansion? They say that the players are going to have to train there from now on wards? What do the players based abroad have that is not available here?”

The project that annoyed El Flaco will see that the Marbella Football Center to be used as a training centre not just for players who were called up for the senior team but also age category side, ranging from the Under-13 to the Under-20. It is estimated between 800-1000 Argentine kids are attached to European clubs.

The property in question, is owned by two Spanish businessmen, Enrique Pérez SERICHOL  and Andrés Roldán CONEJERO. It has four football fields & another four smaller fields, all equipped with artificial light, four dressing rooms for the players and three for coaches.

Other facilities includes four tennis courts, four archery training areas, a gymnasium, a grandstand with a capacity for 1,000 spectators, a VIP terrace and a press room. The AFA also plan to construct a housing complex with 135 rooms for the player’s concentration.

MENOTTI on the other hand shot down the whole idea as it is deliberate attempt from the AFA to ignore the plight the domestic league & the development of home based players.

“This is terrible, the truth is that I am ashamed. I want to go to hell or to go live in Uruguay, this can not be endured. They spent a fortune on an estate in Marbella, so that the coach of the National Team can put together a European side. Those who are playing here are totally being screwed then.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw that on the news today. I started to feel much worse, my throat started to hurt. It made me want to grab a revolver and kill them (referring to those people in the AFA).”

Argentine players at Benfica and Stuttgart on target in pre season matches

The European club pre-season is well under way and we already have a few goal scorers, those playing at Benfica and one at Stuttgart.

Eduardo SALVIO’s vacations were very short lived after his World Cup campaign with the Argentina National Team and he’s back scoring goals for his club side Benfica. It wasn’t just SALVIO who was on target but Franco CERVI as well as newly signed German CONTI. Benfica picked up a 5-0 win against Swindon Town.

Youngster Nicolas GONZALEZ found the back of the net twice for his new club Stuttgart in a 3-3 draw against FV Illertissen. The 20 year old former Argentinos Juniors man recently signed with the Bundesliga team earlier this month on a five year contract. While no video appears to be available of the goals, it’s not a bad way for a forward to introduce himself to his new club.
