Argentine players at Benfica and Stuttgart on target in pre season matches

The European club pre-season is well under way and we already have a few goal scorers, those playing at Benfica and one at Stuttgart.

Eduardo SALVIO’s vacations were very short lived after his World Cup campaign with the Argentina National Team and he’s back scoring goals for his club side Benfica. It wasn’t just SALVIO who was on target but Franco CERVI as well as newly signed German CONTI. Benfica picked up a 5-0 win against Swindon Town.

Youngster Nicolas GONZALEZ found the back of the net twice for his new club Stuttgart in a 3-3 draw against FV Illertissen. The 20 year old former Argentinos Juniors man recently signed with the Bundesliga team earlier this month on a five year contract. While no video appears to be available of the goals, it’s not a bad way for a forward to introduce himself to his new club.

Javier ZANETTI: “If Argentina need me… I’ll help as much as I can”

One of Argentina’s most capped players of all time Javier ZANETTI has come out and given his support for his country.

The Argentina National Team and the AFA are, to put it lightly, a mess. Three different coaches in a year, a severe lack of planning across all age groups and a lack of resources (among other things) have left the federation in shambles.

However, the Inter legend has come stated that should his country and his team need him, he is there to help. Speaking to TyC Sports, here’s what ZANETTI had to say:

“I have always said that if the National Team needs me, I am fully available for my country and above all my National Team. I’ll defend it and help out as much as I can.”

ZANETTI also spoke about the World Cup and Lionel MESSI:

“It wasn’t a good World Cup and that’s normal because of how things have been the last four years. The changing of coaches, of managers. Qualifying for the World Cup in the last match. They didn’t get there with a calm head in order to be able to have a lot of time to work.

“Leo (MESSI) continues to be the best in the world. It wasn’t a good World Cup for Argentina as a team and if the team doesn’t do well, it’s complicated for Leo. But we have to take into account what he means for the world.”

Jose PEKERMAN’s name has been in the running as possibly taking over as director of football (who would oversee all age groups) but certainly having someone of ZANETTI’s stature can only help with everything.

Jose PEKERMAN contacted for Argentina director of football job

Former Argentina National Team manager Jose PEKERMAN has reportedly been contacted to take over the director of football job for his country.

Following the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Jose PEKERMAN announced his resignation as coach of the Colombian National Team. No stranger to high profile jobs, PEKERMAN was reportedly contacted to become Argentina’s director of football, this per multiple reports. According to Leo PARADIZO of Radio Continental, AFA president Claudio TAPIA met with PEKERMAN`s representative, Pascual LEZCANO in Europe in order to attract his client.

PEKERMAN managed the Argentina youth teams where he helped form several of the world’s top players and won three U20 FIFA World Cup tournaments (1995, 1997 and 2001). He managed the senior team at the 2005 Confederations Cup where he finished runner up and also at the 2006 World Cup.

Portland Timbers of MLS sign Tomas CONECHNY

One of Argentina’s brightest young talents has made the switch over from San Lorenzo to Portland.

The 20 year old is joining the MLS club on loan for the remainder of the season. Tomas joins fellow Argentine players Sebastian BLANCO and club legend Diego VALERI at the club. General manager Gavin WILKINSON spoke to the club’s official website and had this to say about the signing:

“We are pleased to announce the addition of Tomás Conechny to our group during this summer transfer window. He is a player we have been following closely, and we believe he has a bright future ahead of him as a player who can play any of the attacking positions. We have been looking to add a young, talented dynamic player and feel that, in Tomás, we have a player who can help contribute short-term, while also giving us a long-term solution in several positions. The opportunity to bring him to Portland was a unique one, and the fact he had already been watched live many times made this possible when we had to move quickly to acquire him.”

Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni SAVARESE said this

“We are excited to have the opportunity to include Tomás CONECHNY at this juncture in the season. Tomás provides our club with another quality, young player, and we look forward to working with him daily to maximize his development. He is a player who possesses very good attacking elements for his age, and we believe he has the tools to become a dangerous attacker in this league moving forward.”

For the Argentina team, the forward has represented his country at four different tournaments. The 2015 U17 Sudamericano, the 2015 U17 FIFA World Cup, the 2017 U20 Sudamericano and the 2017 U20 FIFA World Cup.
