Xavi HERNANDEZ talks MESSI, Argentina, MARADONA and more

26

In a lengthy interview with La Nacion, football legend Xavi HERNANDEZ spoke about a number of topics regarding Lionel MESSI and the Argentina National Team.

Xavi HERNANDEZ has done it all. Multiple time European champion with Spain, a World Cup winner, several Champions League medals, in short, he had an illustrious career. He also spent most of his playing years alongside Lionel MESSI and even several seasons with Javier MASCHERANO. When asked about the two and the comparisons between Lionel MESSI and Diego MARADONA, he didn’t hold back. Here’s what he had to say:

About how MESSI does what Xavi did, playing, organizing…

“MESSI can do what Xavi does, what RAKITIC does, what BUSQUETS does, what INIESTA does, what SUAREZ does. He does everything well this kid. If you put him in the middle, he can be the best central midfielder in the world. If he wants to take the ball off you, he’ll steal it off. If he feels like dribbling you, he’ll dribble you. If he wants to give a pass, he’ll give the best assist in the world. If he takes a free kick, he’ll put in at the right angle. He’s a footballer that cannot be compared to anyone. He’s like MARADONA was in his time, how PELE was in his time. He’s the best player in history.”

Joking about how the only position that is safe is that of goalkeeper TER STEGEN:

“Exactly. He’s a mold on how to play football, he’s great. Furthermore, he is competitive, a winner, a hard worker, generous with the team. He shines in everything he does. We have to enjoy him until he can’t play anymore because there won’t be anyone else of his level.”

On if he thinks he or INIESTA should have won the 2010 Ballon d’Or:

“No, no, no. At the moment, when GUARDIOLA took the paper out and read MESSI, I had a feeling of justice. Simply because MESSI is the best. Better than INIESTA, XAVI, BUSQUETS. Why? Because he dominates everything he does. MESSI can do what Xavi does but Xavi cannot do what MESSI does. And the same for the rest of the players. It’s for that reason that the Balon d’Or in 2010 didn’t hurt. The truth is, we should give it to him every year.”

On MESSI and the Argentina National Team:

“He feels very Argentine, he is very patriotic about his country. He has the hunger and the necessity to win with Argentina. For him, it’s an enormous frustration having not won, the truth is it’s not just his frustration but the entire generation of Argentine footballers that have had bad luck in key moments. To lose two Copa’s America by penalty shoots, a final of the World Cup in extra time, ouf. If football was fair, Argentina is owe something. This generation of footballers deserves to win something. We will see at the World Cup in Russia, Argentina, no doubt are one of the favorites. I believe SAMPAOLI works really well and having MESSI and that entire generation, Argentina have a lot of chances of being champions.”

On if Argentina have taken advantage of MESSI the way Barcelona have:

“Yes, for sure but at the same time it is unfair to say that because they have reached finals and finals are won on details, key moments. We won a World Cup in 2010 but had ROBEEN scored off his shot, the one that CASILLAS saved with his foot, we would not be talking about Spain winning anything. It’s a very fine line between winning and losing. Argentina have the bad luck that Spain had before, when we would get eliminated off penaltyes, when the referee would make a mistake or it wasn’t our day.”

On how people think MESSI has to win a World Cup to be at the same level as MARADONA:

“For me, he’s not missing it, he’s already the best in history, I haven’t seen anyone better than him. I understand the talk about MARADONA, he was and is everyone’s idol. But there are people that say MESSI has not done what MARADONA did. I understand that, but on a footballing level, MESSI has done everything MARADONA did 30 years later, in 2018 it costs twice as much, from the tactical point of view, physically, technically and mentally, all the football players are better. And the same thing will happen 30 years from now, footballers will be better because live evolves. For me, there’s no debate; MESSI is the best player I have seen in history. And after that comes MARADONA.”

On if 2018 is the last World Cup for Lionel MESSI:

“No, I see him being capable of getting to Qatar 2022 because physically he takes care of himself more. Technically speaking, he won’t lose his talent. At 35 or 36, he can get there perfectly, why not? It would depend on him, his mentality, his eagerness to continue. And also what happens at the World Cup in Russia, I would think.”

On what he thinks of Javier MASCHERANO:

“He’s a friend like MESSI. We have a friendship, I have a lot of respect and love for him. MASCHERANO is a natural leader, a person that transmitted a lot to Barcelona. He was an example on how to conduct yourself, how to adapt to a new life and a new style of player; it wasn’t easy for him at first. Javi was an example, on and off the pitch to anyone who arrived to the team. Without wearing the captain’s armband, the last few years, he was a captain for Barcelona. I wish him all the best in his new life in China.”

On Argentina and Jorge SAMPAOLI:

“I believe Argentina have won a lot with SAMPAOLI, he’s a coach who has very clear ideas, is prepared and works well. His teams have an identity. We saw him with Sevilla and Chile, where he did great things. He has a great way of transmiting things. I believe that the identity and ideas that SAMPAOLI will give the group will be very good. And he has MESSI, he’s already a favorite for the title. And if with that you have all the good players that accompany him and a coach capable of lifting the team, Argentina are total favorites.”

Franco ARMANI on Argentina World Cup call-up: “I’m going to fight”

River Plate goalkeeper Franco ARMANI has zero caps to his name with the Argentina National Team but he has stated that he wants to get a chance to play at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Having spent most of his playing career in Colombia and only recently come back to Argentina, ARMANI has been flying under the radar in terms of Argentine goalkeepers. Making a name for himself at Atletico Nacional, it was only after having joined River Plate that he received his first call-up for his country. And for him, it could not have come at a better time.

With Sergio ROMERO injured and the goalkeeping position up for grabs, ARMANI wants to make that spot his own. Speaking with Radio 10, here’s the shot stopper had to say:

“Being on the list of 23 fills me with pride but I’m not satisfied and I’m going to fight for a spot. I have prepared myself in the best way possible and I want to get an opportunity (to play) in the World Cup.”

Despite all of the speculation in the media regarding which players would receive the call to go to the World Cup for Argentina, ARMANI mentioned that he didn’t know anything about it.

“I didn’t know anything about the call-up. I found out when the list came out.”

ARMANI then goes on to speak about Lionel MESSI and the team:

“The same quality he has in dribbling and finishing, he’s got it as a human. He’s an extraordinary leader.

“The idea and the dream of this group is to win the World Cup but to have a good World Cup would be to finish among the four best.”

Aside from winning the FIFA World Cup, the general idea among the players appears to be that finishing in the top four would be a good tournament. Lionel MESSI has said it, as has AFA president Claudio TAPIA and now Franco ARMANI.

Player Ratings for Argentina vs. Haiti

Argentina played a friendly “despedidamatch against Haiti last night, taking care of the Caribbean side 4-0 and leaving their home country with a good feeling and hope for the coming month-plus.

A total of 17 players took part in the match, as six substitutions were allowed. Notable players like Paulo DYBALA, Lucas BIGLIA and Gabriel MERCADO weren’t used, the latter two likely due to carrying knocks.

Here are the players who participated and their ratings for their performances in the match.

Starters

GK Willy CABALLERO

Didn’t get even a sniff of the ball outside of a few pass-backs. Not the best match to judge him on.

Rating: N/A

LB Nicolas TAGLIAFICO

Consistently got forward and provided another form of attack from the left flank. Tracked back well on defense when needed and showed passion and energy. Has earned his spot as the starting left back at the World Cup.

Rating: 8.5/10

CB Federico FAZIO

Wasn’t tested in defense, but he had a couple of loose passes and didn’t look all that comfortable. Still likely to start against Iceland, but Marcos ROJO looked more assured than him.

Rating: 6/10

CB Nicolas OTAMENDI

Like FAZIO, wasn’t threatened all that often, but he stepped up and cut out passes when the opportunity arrived. Also made some stellar long passes from his deep position.

Rating: 8.5/10

RB Eduardo SALVIO

Playing in an unnatural position, SALVIO held up well and consistently got forward with pace and dribbling ability. Committed one or two unneeded fouls and got himself into a few precarious situations with the ball, but played well overall.

Rating: 7/10

CM Javier MASCHERANO

Earning his Argentina record 143rd cap, MASCHERANO looked like the younger version of himself at times, making several important tackles in the midfield. He also created a fair share of chances with long passes. Perhaps El Jefecito isn’t over the hill just yet.

Rating: 7.5/10

CM Giovani LO CELSO

LO CELSO appears to improve as every match goes by. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has played center mid for both PSG and Argentina as of late. In this match, he seamlessly linked the defense with the attack and always made the right decision. His movement with the ball, great vision and ability to make sound tackles in defense has made him indispensable for SAMPAOLI.

Rating: 9/10

LM Angel DI MARIA

DI MARIA’s only saving grace at this point is that he’s willing to take on defenders and never gets tired, which allows him to track back on defense. His final touches/decisions are nothing short of terrible at this point and he doesn’t even look at TAGLIAFICO when he makes forward runs from his left back spot. Cristian PAVON did more in his first few minutes on the pitch than DI MARIA did in an hour. SAMPAOLI has a conundrum on his hands.

Rating: 4.5/10

RM Manuel LANZINI

Didn’t quite recreate the magic of his performance against Italy, but was solid with the ball at his feet and connected well with MESSI and the other attackers.

Rating: 6.5/10

CF Lionel Messi

What more is there to say about the guy? In the team’s farewell match, the captain notched a hat-trick and an assist and sent the team off in style. This might be the best condition and form MESSI has ever arrived to an international tournament in.

Rating: 9.5/10

ST Gonzalo Higuain

As has become customary, he missed one too many chances and just seems lost for confidence right now. He can’t be counted on as the starting number nine, especially for a team that’s starving for goals.

Rating: 5.5/10

Substitutes

CB Marcos ROJO

Like all of the other center backs, ROJO wasn’t given opportunities to defense, but seemed more comfortable than FAZIO. Made a couple of good passes and could prove to be a threat to FAZIO’s starting spot.

Rating: 7/10

RM Maxi MEZA

Came on for LANZINI and played more of a midfielder role than he did against Spain. Took on defenders at times and had a couple of link-ups with MESSI. Also tracked back well and covered for SALVIO when he got forward.

Rating: 7/10

LM Cristian PAVON

Seven minutes after stepping on the pitch, PAVON assisted MESSI’s third goal by weaving his way through three players and lacing a left-footed pass to the middle of the box. He was a bit unsettled at first, but got more comfortable as the nerves wore off. PAVON’s dynamism and clever decision making will force SAMPAOLI to give him a lot of playing time in Russia, possibly at the expense of DI MARIA.

Rating: 8/10

ST Sergio AGUERO

There should be no more debate as to who Argentina’s number nine needs to be. AGUERO’s goal 10 minutes after coming on was vintage, as he held off a defender with his impeccable lower body strength, caught up to a MESSI through ball and lifted his finish past the goalkeeper. Looked lively, both when making runs and when dropping back and passing. Argentina needs AGUERO to stay healthy for the entire World Cup.

Rating: 8.5/10

LB Marcos ACUNA

Got about 20 minutes of action, but Argentina was content to pass the ball around the middle of the field by that point.

Rating: N/A

CM Ever BANEGA

Only played 15 minutes, but he has fallen way behind LO CELSO in the pecking order. Still could prove to be valuable in Russia when Argentina needs to hold the ball with a lead.

Rating: N/A
