World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 26, Diego MARADONA

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 26 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in spot number 26 we have Diego MARADONA scoring his 26th goal for Argentina at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in a 2-0 win versus Belgium.

After suffering a 1-0 loss versus Belgium in their opening match at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Argentina were up against them once more, this time in the semi finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Carlos BILARDO’s men were full of confidence following a 2-1 win against England in the quarter finals and they were only 90 minutes away from their third appearance in a final of a FIFA World Cup.

Diego MARADONA scored his 4th and 5th goal of the tournament in the 2-0 win. A lovely toe poke chip finish by the number 10 gave his country the 1-0 lead. But it was the second goal which stole the match. Receiving a pass from midfield, Diego MARADONA picked the ball up and dribble in between several Belgium players (not unlike what he did to the English a match earlier) and scored one of the goals of the tournament. His 26th goal for Argentina meant that the team once more made the final of the World Cup.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:
18. Nery PUMPIDO
2. Sergio BATISTA
5. Jose BROWN
7. Jorge BURRUCHAGA
9. Jose CUCIUFFO
10. Diego MARADONA

Argentina XI from training with U20 players

Argentina coach Jorge SAMPAOLI put out an interesting eleven in training on Friday.

Eduardo SALVIO was placed as a right back in a four man back line with Javier MASCHERANO playing as a center back. Nicolas TAGLIAFICO as the left back and Sergio AGUERO as the number 9 up front.

ROFFO; SALVIO, MASCHERANO, Nehuen PEREZ, TAGLIAFICO; LOVERA, MORENO, AYALA, ALVAREZ; LANZINI, AGUERO.

Gabriel MERCADO: “I Was scared of missing the World Cup”

28

Gabriel MERCADO was the talking point of many in Argentina in regards to an injury which he sustained over the weekend.

The Sevilla defender was substituted off for his club last weekend due to an injury and thankfully for the player and his country, it wasn’t anything serious. Upon arriving to Argentina last Friday, Gabriel MERCADO spoke to the media about his recovery and how he felt about the possibility of not going to the World Cup

“I’M FEELING A LITTLE BIT BETTER NOW, ITS BEEN A FEW DAYS BUT THERE IS STILL SOME DISCOMFORT THOUGH IT’S JUST MINIMAL. FROM WHAT THE DOCTOR HAS REPORTED, I’M AVAILABLE.”

MERCADO was substituted in Sevilla’s match against Betis after suffering discomfort on his back. He admitted that he was scared about missing the World Cup.

“I WAS SCARED BECAUSE IT WAS A SIMILAR EPISODE THAT HAPPENED TO ME LAST TIME AND IT COST ME THE WORLD CUP. FIRST THING THAT CAME TO MY MIND IS THAT I COULD MISS THE WORLD CUP BUT THANK GOD IT WASN’T THE CASE THIS TIME.”

Despite this setback, MERCADO is confident that he is good to go to Russia.

“I’M VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING PART OF THE 23 PLAYERS IN JUNE. YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR JORGE (SAMPAOLI) TO RELEASE THE LIST EVEN THOUGH HE HAS ALREADY SPOKE TO US ON WHAT IS OUR ROLE AT THE WORLD CUP.”

However, MERCADO still remains cautious. He was originally named by Alejandro SABELLA for the World Cup in Brazil but did not make the cut for the final squad.

“YOU HAVE TO BE RESPECTFUL WITH YOUR TEAMMATES AND WAIT BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE ON THE LIST ONE DAY AND NOT THE NEXT. I UNDERSTAND THAT SITUATION VERY WELL EVEN THOUGH WE ALL HAVE AMBITIONS AND WANT TO WIN THE WORLD CUP.”

Finally when asked about Argentina’s farewell match that will take place at La Bombonera.

“WE ARE HERE TO SAY GOODBYE TO THE FANS AT THE VENUE CHOSEN BY THE AFA.”

Alejandro “Papu” GOMEZ: “It’s an ugly feeling, not going to the World Cup”

22

Alejandro GOMEZ spoke to Argentine sports media TNT Sports LA and confessed his disappointment of not being named in Jorge SAMPAOLI’s 35 player preliminary list for Russia.

Having started against Peru in the World Cup qualifier and also appearing in friendlies, he was excited about the prospect of going to the World Cup.

“It is an ugly feeling, to be so close yet not going to the World Cup. I was very excited because I started against Peru and almost played against Ecuador. Plus I also played several friendlies.”

Papu, as he is popularly known, did think about going to Russia leading in the hours leading to the announcement of the preliminary list:

“The truth is that I felt that I was an important player in the group.”

On what happened between himself and Lucas BIGLIA:

“It seems stupid to talk about an incident involving two Argentine’s on the pitch but thank God nothing happened to Lucas.”

In addition, he recounted everything that crossed his mind when he did not receive news about a call:

“I thought SAMPAOLI was testing on other players during his last tour because he knew me already. I had thousands of things going in my head but about the preliminary list; I thought I had a chance based on what we have done in the last few months.”

World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 27, Pedro TROGLIO

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 27 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 27th place we have Pedro TROGLIO scoring in the 27th minute against the Soviet Union (USSR) at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in a 2-0 win.

Following a surprising 1-0 loss against Cameroon in their opening match at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, the reigning world champions needed a win in the second match in order to have any hope to advance in the tournament. With the match being played at Diego MARADONA’s second home, the Stadio San Paolo, the game itself could not have started any worse than it did.

After only 11 minutes, starting goalkeeper Nery PUMPIDO had to be substituted off for Sergio GOYCOCHEA (who would later go on to become an Argentine hero). But the change in between the sticks brought good fortune for Carlos BILARDO’s team as Pedro TROGLIO would score Argentina’s first goal of the tournament in the 27th minute.

After a lovely juggle of the ball and cross into the area, Pedro TROGLIO jumped and headed the ball into the top of the corner. With the score at 1-0, one of the goal scorers of the 1986 FIFA World Cup final, Jorge BURRUCHAGA slid the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs to double the lead.

The two goals sealed the 2-0 victory and gave Argentina their first 3 points in Italy.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:

1. Nery PUMPIDO
2. Sergio BATISTA
4. Jose BASUALDO
7. Jorge BURRUCHAGA
8. Claudio CANIGGIA
10. Diego MARADONA
15. Pedro MONZON
16. Julio OLARTICOECHEA
18. Jose SERRIZUELA
20. Juan SIMON
21. Pedro TROGLIO
