Lionel MESSI out against Spain, new line-up for Argentina

Lionel MESSI is out for Argentina’s match against Spain while there’s the rumored line-up.

The Argentina captain will not be risked, despite his desire of wanting to play. Jorge SAMPAOLI will not risk him and will instead give the captain a rest. Instead, his former FC Barcelona team mate Javier MASCHERANO will wear the armband tonight, just as he did when the two teams met last time around in 2010 in Argentina’s 4-1 victory in Buenos Aires as well as in their 2-1 loss to Spain in 2009 in Madrid. Here’s the rumored line-up which Jorge SAMPAOLI will reportedly go with:

Argentina probably line-up vs. Spain

ROMERO; BUSTOS, OTAMENDI, ROJO, TAGLIAFICO; MEZA, MASCHERANO, BIGLIA, LO CELSO; BANEGA; HIGUAIN

It’s rumored to be a 4-4-1-1 with Ever BANEGA playing behind the front man Gonzalo HIGUAIN who will look to find the back of the net for Argentina this time around. Giovano LO CELSO would start for a second consecutive match while Lucas BIGLIA refinds his 2014 World Cup final buddy Javier MASCHERANO. Maxi MEZA will get his first cap for his country as he’ll start in midfield with the two veterans alongside him. As we reported yesterday, SAMPAOLI will opt with Marcos ROJO instead of Federico FAZIO as the Manchester United man plays his first match for his country since coming back from injury.

In the full back position remains Fabricio BUSTOS and Nicolas TAGLIAFICO as Manchester City man Nicolas OTAMENDI completed the back four with club rival Sergio ROMERO as the goalkeeper.

Argentina eleven from training, MESSI, BANEGA in

Argentina’s latest eleven from training included Lionel MESSI and Ever BANEGA.

Jorge SAMPAOLI held a training session behind closed doors on Monday afternoon in Madrid. After speaking with Fox Sports and stating that he’s hopeful of playing on Tuesday, Lionel MESSI appears to be getting his wish granted as he was part of the team which trained on Monday. Here were the eleven players:

ROMERO; BUSTOS, OTAMENDI, ROJO, TAGLIAFICO; MASCHERANO, BANEGA; MEZA, MESSI, LO CELSO; HIGUAIN

Five players who started the 2-0 win against Italy would once more be in the starting line-up, that is to say Fabricio BUSTOS, Nicolas OTAMENDI, Nicolas TAGLIAFICO, Giovani LO CELSO and Gonzalo HIGUAIN. Ever BANEGA who came on as a substitute and scored against Italy would also start.

Sergio ROMERO would regain his starting position in between the goal posts while full backs Fabricio BUSTOS and Nicolas TAGLIAFICO get a second consecutive run out. It could be that SAMPAOLI is looking to see if they can both cement their spots in Russia. Marcos ROJO gets a rare start in the center of the back line as the Manchester United man is usually deployed as a left back. He would start alongside Nicolas OTAMENDI.

In midfield., Javier MASCHERANO comes in place for Lucas BIGLIA as the veteran is included in the eleven. Ever BANEGA who impressed after coming on against Italy gets the start. MEZA would receive his first ever cap for his country and what opposition and what an opportunity it is for him to impress the boss. Lionel MESSI needs no introduction as he is likely to play only 45 minutes. Giovano LO CELSO gets a second run out while Gonzalo HIGUAIN gets the nod ahead of Lautaro MARTINEZ.

While this line-up is not confirmed, it is the eleven which trained on Monday afternoon and bar any possibly small changes (should MESSI not start), this looks to be the starting eleven who will play in Madrid.

Lionel MESSI: “My idea is to play against Spain”

Argentina captain Lionel MESSI wants to play on Tuesday against Spain.

After having missed out on Argentina’s 2-0 win against Italy on Friday, Lionel MESSI has stated that he would like to play against Spain on Tuesday. Speaking with Fox Sports Argentina, here’s what MESSI had to say:

Lionel MESSI on Fox Sports Argentina

“My idea is to play vs. Spain, there’s only missing the last training session to see how I’ll be. I wanted to play against Italy but yesterday (Sunday) I trained normally, I felt good and hope to play.”

There were rumors on Sunday that should MESSI play on Tuesday, he would only play 45 minutes (media reports had mentioned him only playing in the second half). Per the tests which were done on Sunday, MESSI showed no sign of injury but did show some potential risks which could occur.

TNT Sports claims that Lionel will play from the start on Tuesday but that has yet to have been confirmed by anyone from the coaching staff publicly. It remains to be seen whether he’ll end up playing and if he does, how long he would play for against Spain. However, the decision seems to be with MESSI himself, more than anyone.

Juan RIQUELME: Lionel MESSI and Andres INIESTA the best

6

Hailed as the “last real number 10”, Juan RIQUELME gave an interview to Spanish newspaper Marca where he commented about Argentina’s match vs. Spain, the World Cup and more.

Having played alongside both Lionel MESSI and Andres INIESTA, the Boca legend weighed in on what he thinks of the two players. The following is the interview from Marca.

You will see the Spain v Argentina match on television at home. How do you see this game going?

“Argentina are very excited and I hope MESSI can play to the fullest. And I hope INIESTA too as he’s the one who plays the best ball of all. If those two monsters are on the pitch, fun is assured. We’ll see something nice, for sure.”

For you, Leo and Andres, are still the two best, right?

“For me and for all football fans, I think. Messi is the best in the world and Andres, the one who understands the game better, the one who sees down there on the pitch everything we see sitting in the stands or in the armchair at home. He sees the same thing… but being on the grass and with the ball! Amazing.

“They are the two best. I love watching them play and all I want is for the time of the game to arrive and for people to enjoy and have fun, because that’s what football is for.”

Has Andres been at the same level over the years?

“INIESTA is unique, and you have to enjoy him a lot, because when he doesn’t play anymore, we will miss him. I don’t know if we will be lucky enough to see something similar. Did you see the pass that he gave to RODRIGO against Germany? It was fabulous.

“Only he does that. What happens is that we get used to it and it looks normal, but when he’s not there, we’ll say: ‘Do you remember the passes Andres gave?’ Nobody else is going to give them. For me, seeing him control the ball, pass the ball… it’s a luxury. Those who like to watch football should be grateful to Andres.”

How do you see the battle of styles between La Roja and your country?

“Spain has a known style, always trying to have more possession than the opponent. And Argentina is still looking for a way to play. The World Cup is short and SAMPAOLI is still trying to complete the squad list, and then build a team. The match is very good for my country to know what level it is at and if it can compete with the best.

“I hope that Argentina will improve, but the style of Spain has been defined for some time. Argentina is still in that process of finding a team, which is the most difficult.”

What about Lautaro MARTINEZ, the new pearl from Argentina? Is he that good?

“We are excited about him. In the Argentine league he makes the difference. I hope he keeps growing, learning from HIGUAIN, MESSI and AGUERO.”

The ’10’ of Argentina is MESSI, but, conceptually, it’s RIQUELME…

“This team is still being formed. We hope that in those 30 days of the World Cup, MESSI is well. If Leo is fine, he is capable of everything. For the first time he comes rested to a World Cup, without having played everything, and that is an advantage. He will be physically better than in other World Cups.”

Do we expect an offensive Argentina on Tuesday?

“I hope it is a great game, that Argentina try to attack and play well, because we know that Spain will not change. They may miss BUSQUETS, but if MESSI plays, there is an obligation to attack. We are very happy that Leo is Argentine.”

If he had chosen Spain…”

[Laughs] Surely, with him, Spain would have had more chances to win another World Cup. He has many colleagues from Barcelona, he trains there every day, they know each other. He would be an advantage, but… he’s Argentine!”

Do you see any other favourites?

“I see Brazil as very strong. They’re playing well and have NEYMAR. Germany can do well and always fight. France, too… but Brazil are very strong.”

Besides Messi, is there not another player like Neymar?

“MESSI, Cristiano RONALDO and NEYMAR are on a level above the rest. These players will not be repeated anymore. They can make a difference in the World Cup.”

On the topic of RIQUELME, here’s a fun little fact from the 2006 FIFA World Cup:

Argentina rumored line-up against Spain on Tuesday

A first rumored line-up is out for Argentina as preparations continues ahead of Tuesday’s friendly match against Spain.

After having missed out on training with the squad on Saturday, captain Lionel MESSI participated in the training session on Sunday at Real Madrid’s training complex. However, more bad news hit the team in terms of injuries. Zenit St. Petersburg’s Leandro PAREDES and West Ham United’s Manuel LANZINI both picked up knocks in their right legs and are not fully fit. It remains to be seen if they will take part in the match on Tuesday. With the already injured Sergio AGUERO, Angel DI MARIA and a not fully fit Lionel MESSI, this brings the list of injury hit players to five.

A photograph by Spanish media AS was taken of Jorge SAMPAOLI’s notebook with the names of players on it. That photograph included one team consisting of six players and another team consisting of seven players. On one side, these were the names:

Team 1 ahead of Spain match:

ROJO, OTAMENDI; MASCHERANO, BIGLIA; PAVON, HIGUAIN

Team 2 ahead of Spain match:

FAZIO, FUNES MORI; BIGLIA, PEREZ; MEZA, MARTINEZ, PEROTTI

MESSI as the wild card. BUSTOS and TAGLIAFICO’s names were put in as the ful backs with ACUNA, MERCADO and CORREA’s names put in on the side.

However, La Nacion is reporting that this could be the eleven to start against the 2010 World Cup champions:
ROMERO; BUSTOS, OTAMENDI, ROJO, TAGLIAFICO; LO CELSO, MASCHERANO, BANEGA; MESSI, HIGUAIN, PAVON

All three goalkeepers, that is to say Sergio ROMERO, Willy CABALLERO and Nahuel GUZMAN, all did specific training sessions.
