Congratulations to Cholo SIMEONE, Atleti Europa League Campeone!

8

He’s done it this time!

After being disappointed on two occasions in the UEFA Champions League Final, Diego SIMEONE and Atletico Madrid have redeemed themselves by clinching the Europa League title. They defeated Marseille 3-0 at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

This was the club’s third Europa League title in eight years. Impressive enough it was also El Cholo’s sixth trophy in eight major finals with Atleti. But on this occasion, he had to watch his team from the stands (alongside his children) after receiving a touchline ban during the semi-final. As such his assistant, German BURGOS took charge from the side-line and did a great job in executing every plan they’ve been working on for this final.

Angel CORREA started the game for Atleti and played until the 88th minute while Axel WERNER was on the bench. Lucas OCOMPOS started for Marseille but only lasted until the 55th minute.

A big congratulations to El Cholo, Mono BURGOS, Angel, Alex and also not forgetting Atleti’s goalkeeping coach Pablo VERCELLONE!

Gonzalo HIGUAÍN on playing for Argentina: “We always give everything”

31

In a candid interview with TNT Sports LA, Gonzalo HIGUAÍN spoke about the goal that wasn’t in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final, the critics and more.
Argentina’s number 9 has been under heavy criticism since 2014 and he has revealed that he would still like to be the goal scorer of the World Cup. Here’s what he had to say:

Gonzalo HIGUAÍN on the Argentina National Team:

“We always give everything for our country. Hopefully I could be the top goal scorer of the World Cup. I always want to help Argentina.”

Gonzalo HIGUAÍN on nearly quitting football:

“The critics don’t bother me. My mother’s the one that suffered the most. […] I was at the point of quitting football. My mother’s the one that gave me strength to continue playing.”

Gonzalo Higuain on not scoring in the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup:

“I scored a more beautiful goal and that is having a daughter and a wife. And for me, that’s more important. Everything else comes secondary after being a father.”

Five names reportedly confirmed for Argentina’s World Cup squad

Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI has reportedly already confirmed to five players they will be going to the World Cup.

Per a report by TyC Sports, SAMPAOLI told the five players himself that they will be in the squad. Those five players would (obviously) join Lionel MESSI as the list would be at six players. The five players are:

Sergio AGUERO (Manchester City)
Javier MASCHERANO (Hebei Fortune)
Manuel LANZINI (West Ham United)
Nicolas TAGLAIFICO (Ajax)
Eduardo SALVIO (Benfica)

All five were present (among a few others) and training today (bar AGUERO, who is doing rehab work separately from the rest of the team).

Esteban CAMBIASSO joins Jose PEKERMAN in Colombia team

3

Former Argentina international Esteban CAMBIASSO has joined the Colombian National Team.

Colombia, currently coached by Argentine Jose PEKERMAN, will get another Argentine in their coaching staff as Esteban CAMBIASSO will be part of the team for the World Cup. CAMBIASSO will join the team in Italy at the end of this match.

Jose PEKERMAN coached Esteban CAMBIASSO at more than one level with the Argentina National Team with the two men having won the 1997 U20 FIFA World Cup. PEKERMAN then coached CAMBIASSO at the senior level, most notably at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

CAMBIASSO isn’t the only former Argentina international who will be at the World Cup as Pablo AIMAR joined the Argentina National Team where he will work alongside coach Jorge SAMPAOLI.

World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 29, Argentina out in 1982

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 30 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 29th place we have Argentina playing in their 29th group stage match at a FIFA World Cup.

It was a disastrous World Cup for Cesar Luis MENOTTI and his team. Five matches, two wins, three losses, seven goals scored and a big red card for Diego MARADONA.

Brazil had one of the strongest midfields, if not the strongest midfield in the world. Zico, Socrates and Falcao just to name a few. When the two South American teams clashed, it was an all out war. A ridiculous free kick by EDER saw his shot come off the crossbar and it was Zico in the 11th minute who got to the end of it and scored.

The second goal by Serginho was a classic Brazilian goal, one that ripped Argentina to shreds. The third saw Zico cut through the Argentina back line with a pass which landed to Junior’s feet and the Brazilian made no mistake.

At 3-0, they were comfortably ahead and Diego MARDONA eventually got himself red carded in the 85th minute. Oddly enough, for minutes after the sending off, Argentina got their first and only goal of the match with a shot from outside the area by Ramon DIAZ.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:

7. Ubaldo FILLOL
1. Osvaldo ARDILES
3. Juan BARBAS
4. Daniel BERTONI
5. Gabriel CALDERON
8. Luis GALVAN
10. Diego MARADONA
11. Mario KEMPES
14. Jorge OLGUIN
15. Daniel PASSARELLA
18. Alberto TARANTINI
