Emiliano Dibu Martínez comments on Argentina’s World Cup group draw

4

Emiliano Dibu Martínez spoke about Argentina’s World Cup group draw for Qatar.

Dibu Martínez and the Argentina national team have been drawn in Group C at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. They will play their opening match against Saudi Arabia and their second against Mexico with their third match against Poland.

Martínez stated what the players of the Argentina national team think of the draw. Speaking in an interview with Ole, here is what he had to say:

“Everyone in the group is happy. It’s nice to think of what is to come. Still, we are taking it one match at a time.

“There comes a moment where you don’t know if the rival picked is good or bad. I got more nervous than in a game. There is a lot of anxiety about it being my first World Cup. It’s going to be a f****d up group but a nice one.

“I don’t remember watching Saudi Arabia, so maybe I can watch them now. The other day I saw Poland and we might play Mexico in a friendly match.

“If you don’t win the first match, you’re full of questions. Some raise their level in the group stage. At a World Cup, you have to beat them all. We have to finish first in the group.”

He was also asked about a Whatsapp group and mentioned what Ángel Di María told him during the Copa America:

“It happened after the Copa, we were all sending each other pictures of where each one of us was, if we were having a barbecue with the family or those things. The group on Whatsapp is called Copa America, we put it for the group and it stayed like that. Paredes put it together for a barbecue and it stayed.

“Di María told me I was sick after the match against Colombia. Ángel didn’t understand how I could be talking to a Colombian player while he was shooting, hehe.”

Sergio Agüero won’t join Argentina national team for World Cup, Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez

17

Sergio Agüero will not remain with the Argentina national team for the 2022 Qatar World Cup as he spoke about Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez.

Agüero was set to be part of the Argentina national team coaching staff for the World Cup. He, along with Lionel Scaloni and AFA president Chiqui Tapia had spoken about it. However, speaking in an interview with ESPN on Thursday, Agüero stated that will not be happening. Here is what he had to say:

“I spoke to Chiqui (AFA president Tapia), I was clear. My idea is to come (to the World Cup) to enjoy it, as a fan. I have a good relationship with everyone but I don’t see myself being with the coch staff and the boys on a day-to-day basis.

“I get along very well with my team mates and I want to continue like this. What they ask for is a different role and I’m not here to do that.:

He was also asked about Lionel Messi and winning the Copa America:

“The title we were all waiting for but above all, him. It gave an extra joy to everyone. Especially to him. He took that weight off him that he had for so many years of wanting to win a title with the national team. It shows on the pitch, the joy, the people… He enjoys it much more.”

In regards to Julián Álvarez:

“He is mature because he is playing at River. I mean… I think that over time he will continue to learn things, like his finishing, why he didn’t kick before or why he didn’t touch it before… That’s going to happen to him all the time.

“The player learns in matches. But it’s already noticeable that he has a maturity and is learning a little more each time. City bought him for a reason.”

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni on Angel Di Maria, opponents

7

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about Angel Di Maria and playing against countries from different continents.

Lionel Scaloni will want to make it two trophies won as coach of the national team. When he took over as coach of the Argentina national team, many players had retired or were reaching the end of their cycle. One of those players was Angel Di Maria.

However, Di Maria is arguably playing some of the best football ever for the Argentina national team. In an interview with TyC Sports, he spoke about the World Cup draw and the possibility of players being left out of the team. But he also spoke about Angel Di Maria. Here is what he had to say:

“I don’t know if it’s Di Maria’s best moment with the national team but it is the one in which he is most recognized. He has played unforgettable matches but when he wins a title, it just magnifies it all.

I remember some of his matches in 2012, 2013, 2014, they were honestly unforgettable. It would not be fair to say that this is his best moment but yes, the most recognized because he won (a trophy) and he won it with his goal.

Scaloni also commented on what he told Di Maria after the 2018 World Cup:

“When the 2018 World Cup ended, I was the one who told him: “You don’t have to quit the national team, in any case, let it be the coach who doesn’t call you” and after that, the coach who would end up not calling him was me.

In regards to not calling him to the team:

“We never doubted him as a player or as a person, we have a great relationship. In that time (2019), we had a reason for his absence. Nico Gonzalez started wearing the shirt of the national team and we saw them in the same position, on the left.

“After that, we had Angel on the right because he gave us balance to defend and unbalanced when attacking, so at that moment, we prefered for him not to be called up but nothing more than that happened. We always knew that he was going to be with us.

“He asked to play, something which is logical for any football player and even more for someone of his level.

Regarding the team and opponents:

“At the 2019 Copa America, we played good matches, we had our moments against Brazil, we lost. We started the qualifiers well and then came the Copa America that we won, which we started by not playing well, with some shortcomings in the second halves. That the team could not continue playing in the same way.

“The opponents played us differently than now, they respect us more now. After winning the Copa, everything was gone (the pressure) and we started to play more freely. Everything that we asked of them, they did for 60, 70, 80 mintues or the entire match and now it’s more consolidated.

“I don’t know if there is a disadvantage of not playing against other continents during these years, we would have liked to play them but I wouldn’t call it a disadvantage. We were fortunate to play Germany but they changed coaches. We would have liked to have played against national teams from different continents but I am convinced that our team will face every match the same way and will show face against any rival.”
