Time for Paulo Dybala to cement his spot in the Argentina national team

Paulo Dybala has been selected for the Argentina national team for the first time in close to two years.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was regularly selecting Dybala in his squads since taking over as coach three years ago. However, it’s been nearly two years since the jewel has put on an Argentina shirt.

Since that time, Argentina played two World Cup qualifying matches and lifted the Copa America trophy, two things which Dybala has missed out on. Already 27 years of age, Dybala will be 28 in November and he is still not a regular in the national team.

He first made his national team debut in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss vs. Ecuador nearly six years ago. Since that time, he has been sent off, not selected for the 2016 Copa America, not selected for the 2021 Copa America and missed a handful of matches due to injuries. On paper, he has two goals in 29 matches.

On the pitch, there’s no doubting Dybala’s talents. He could walk into any club in the world and instantly make them a better team. But with his country, he struggles to get into the starting eleven when selected. He once infamously stated that it is difficult to play alongside Lionel Messi, a comment which left a sour taste in the mouths of many and made it seem as if he wasn’t capable of playing next to the best player in the world.

However way you want to comprehend Dybala’s comments about playing with Messi, he proved the doubters wrong at the 2019 Copa America. It was the third place playoff and coach Lionel Scaloni started a front three of Sergio Agüero, Lionel Messi and Paulo Dybala. It was a match where Messi was controversially red carded but also a match where Dybala scored and he showed that he can play alongside Messi.

Last season was one filled with COVID and injuries. One which saw not only Dybala struggle but Juventus going trophy less. This led to, as mentioned earlier, the 27 year old missing out on being included in the Argentina squad, a team which won the Copa America.

But this time around could be different. A summer off to rest and train, the Argentine posted several social media pictures of himself getting into better shape and elected as vice captain of Juventus, the pressure is on Dybala to step up his game this season. And the first match of the season saw Dybala wearing the armband for Juventus, scoring three minutes into the match and assisting the other goal.

Lautaro Martínez, who won Serie A with Inter and was the starting number 9 for Argentina when they won the Copa America, is just coming back from a knock. Lucas Alario, who was previously preferred over Dybala, has been left out of the Argentina squad. Sergio Agüero, the veteran, is injured and out until October. And Mauro Icardi, who was rumored to be selected for September’s squad, injured his shoulder and is out for 3-4 weeks.

The stars are aligned for Dybala to cement himself and show that, once and for all, he belongs in the Argentina national team. In excellent form and with the summer off, there is no reason for him not to shine if given the chance.

In addition to World Cup qualifying matches in September, there will be three more of them in October and two more in November. And with three months at the start of next season to show their worth before the World Cup, the time is this season and it’s now where Dybala must prove himself to coach Lionel Scaloni that he should be selected.

Argentina squad announced for World Cup qualifiers, Paulo Dybala included

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has announced his squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers and Paulo Dybala has been included.

Dybala is the big name inclusion as he has not been selected for the national team in three years. With the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Lucas Alario with knocks, Sergio Aguero out until October and Mauro Icardi out for 3-4 weeks, Scaloni has opted for the jewel from Juventus.

In addition, with goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin having undergone surgery on his knee, Geronimo Rulli of Villarreal has been included. Juan Foyth, who was part of the two World Cup qualifying matches prior to Argentina winning the Copa America, is also back in the team. Emiliano Buendia of Aston Villa is included after, like Foyth, he missed out on the Copa America.

The squad for the September qualifiers is very similar to that which won the Copa America but with some new additions.

PSG confirm Mauro Icardi out for 3-4 weeks, will miss Argentina matches

Mauro Icardi will miss 3-4 weeks for PSG, also ruling him out of the Argentina squad for September’s World Cup qualifying matches.

Icardi started the season off with two goals in just as many matches for PSG before injurying his shoulder on the weekend. With the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Lucas Alario not being fully fit and Sergio Aguero out until October, Icardi was reportedly going to be included in the Argentina team for the September matches.

However, PSG have confirmed that his shoulder injury which he sustained on Saturday will keep him out for three to four weeks.

Argentina play three World Cup qualifying matches in September. An away match vs. Venezuela on September 2 being the first one. After that comes a repeat of the Copa America final, away vs. Brazil on September 5 and the last one on September 9, at home vs. Bolivia.

Lazio reportedly lower Joaquin Correa price tag as Inter make offer

Joaquin Correa has been in the news for a few weeks as a possible move away from Lazio remains a possibility.

Correa could be leaving Lazio with Inter as the possible destination as Lazio has reportedly lowered their price tag. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Lazio have lowered their price tag from €40 to €35 million for the Argentina.

Per the report, Inter have offered a loan plus an obligation to buy for €30 million.

A Copa America winner with Argentina, Correa has been at the club since 2018 but a move to Inter would mean that we could see both Lautaro Martinez and Correa playing alongside each other at club level.

Angel Correa scores third goal of the season for Atletico in 1-0 win vs. Elche

Angel Correa cannot stop scoring as he managed his third goal of the season for Atletico Madrid in their 1-0 win vs. Elche.

Correa, who scored two goals in Atletico’s opening match of La Liga, added a third one today and once more, it was the match winner. With both Correa and Rodrigo De Paul in the starting eleven, the two Copa America winners with Argentine combined for the only goal of the match. He finished last season with 9 goals in the league.

Rodrigo De Paul provided a very similar assist to the one he gave Angel Di Maria in the final of the Copa America with Argentina. A cross from deep as the goalkeeper came out, Correa controlled it and he hit the ball with the outside of his foot for the goal.

Nehuen Perez was an unused substitute for Diego Simeone while Lucas Boye and Ivan Marcone started for Elche. Guido Carrillo was brought on for Elche as was Dario Benedetto who made his debut for the club.
