61

Lionel Scaloni spoke on Sunday at a press conference and commented about the national team, in addition to confirming the starting eleven on Monday’s last group stage game against the already-eliminated Bolivia.

Coach Scaloni commented on Brazil, complimented Lionel Messi, talked about the dispute in the left-back position of the national team, and minimized Argentina’s 16 games unbeaten streak.

Here is what Argentina’s coach had to say:

“We are aware that any opponent will be difficult. What we want is to reach the highest in this cup.”

“Honestly, the number of games without losing is not that important for me. I am interested that the team is doing well. It leaves us calm that we are a solid team, although there are always things that we would like to improve.”

Regarding Argentina’s left-back position:

“(Marcos) Acuña and (Nicolás) Tagliafico are players we like; we are happy with both. We can rotate them through the games, and we are satisfied with both players.”

About Lionel Messi:

“I think that in regards to Messi, everything has been said. We are proud to have him and convinced that he will give us more joy.”

In addition, Lionel Scaloni added that Lionel Messi is the only player who always has a place secured inside the starting eleven:

“In this team there is only one player who has a place secured in the starting eleven and everyone knows who he is. The rest have to earn it. For us, it is important that no one relaxes and that they continue to demonstrate game after game. They know it very well.”

Regarding the possibility of facing Brazil in a hypothetical final, here is what Scaloni had to say:

“The last game that Brazil lost was with Argentina; it was an even match. Between two such powerful teams, anything can happen. They are a consolidated team, but nothing should be ruled out.”

Finally, Scaloni gave hope to the Argentine fans for what is to come:

“We believe that we can compete to the maximum with all the teams. We are convinced that this is the way to go.”

On this day, Argentina with a 4-1 win vs. United States at 2007 Copa America

On this day in 2007, Argentina managed a 4-1 win vs. the United States at the Copa America.

It was Argentina’s opening match of the Copa America against visitors United States. Alfio Basile had taken over Jose Pekerman after the 2006 World Cup and numbers were on Basile’s side. Coco Basile was and remains the last manager to coach Argentina to a trophy, having won the 1993 Copa America.

Not only is Basile the last coach to win a trophy, he had a 100% undefeated record at a Copa America. He had yet to lose a single match in the tournament. Basile fielded a strong team to start the tournament in Venezuela:

Roberto Abbondanzieri; Gabriel Heinze, Gabriel Milito, Roberto Ayala, Javier Zanetti; Esteban Cambiasso, Javier Mascherano, Juan Seba Veron; Juan Roman Riquelme, Hernan Crespo and Lionel Messi

It was a diamond shaped team with Mascherano as the defensive midfielder, Cambiasso and Veron as the central midfielders and Riquelme as the playmaker. However, despite the strong team, it was the United States who took an early lead.

Gabriel Milito with a foul and a penalty as Eddie Johnson would score passed Abbondanzieri. With the United States taking the lead, it didn’t take long for Argentina to draw level.

A free kick taken short by Veron to Riquelme as he would cross it into the penalty area. A scramble and it would find Crespo for his first of the tournament. The second Argentina goal would come in the second half.

Lionel Messi would play a lovely ball into Crespo and a predator like finish by Hernan gave Argentina the 2-1 lead.

Alfio Basile would make three changes as Pablo Aimar, Carlos Tevez and Fernando Gago would all be brought in. And two of those three would score.

Crespo with a pass to Heinze who made the overlapping run and his cross found Aimar who made an unmarked run inside the penalty area and his header would make it 3-1 for Argentina.

Riquelme would create the fourth goal. His cross found Tevez who had beat the offside trap and he was one on one with the goalkeeper and would score his first goal of the tournament.

Argentina to play Colombia or Ecuador in quarter finals of Copa America

Argentina will play one of Colombia or Ecuador in the quarter finals of the Copa America.

Lionel Scaloni’s team have secured a top two finish in the group which means that the only way they can play Brazil would be in a potential final. However, before even getting to a final, there’s the matter of a quarter final and a win there would still mean a semi-final match.

While we know that Argentina will finish in the top two, we also know the final standings of the other group. Brazil top the group to no one’s surprise, while Peru finish second. Third and fourth places go to Colombia and Ecuador respectively while Venezuela finish last in the group and miss out on the knock out rounds.

Should Argentina finish first in their group, they would play Ecuador in the quarter finals. But a second place finish means a match vs. Colombia in the quarters.

A win in the quarter finals for Argentina would mean a match vs. Colombia or the second runner up in Argentina’s current group. That is one of Paraguay, Chile or Uruguay.

The final matches in the group will be played on Monday as Argentina are up against Bolivia and Uruguay against Paraguay.

Argentina rumored XI vs. Bolivia, Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero to start

Lionel Scaloni has many things to take into consideration when thinking of his starting eleven vs. Bolivia for Monday’s Copa America match. He presently has six players on yellow cards and should any one of them get another yellow, they would miss the quarter final clash.

The other thing is Lionel Messi. There have been rumors that Scaloni would be resting Messi for the match but it appears as if that will not be the case. There remains a few doubts in the team regarding the eleven but most are apparently confirmed. Per a report by Ole, this will be the starting eleven:
