On this day in 1986, Argentina won their second World Cup

On this day 35 years ago, Argentina won their second FIFA World Cup in Mexico 1986, after beating West Germany 3-2 in the final. With Diego Maradona as the leader on the pitch, and coach Carlos Bilardo commanding from the sidelines, the national team would reach eternal glory.

On June 29 of 1986, Argentina would face West Germany at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City with an attendance of 114,600, which remains to this day the second largest World Cup final attended (only behind the 1950 final, at the Estadio Maracana, Brazil).

Jose Luis Brown would score with his head to give Argentina the lead after a precise cross from Jorge Burruchaga, a cross that Germany goalkeeper Harald Schumacher was not able to intercept.

In the second half, Argentina would go on to extend the difference to two goals when Jorge Valdano found himself face to face with Germany’s goalkeeper. A class finish, opening his right foot at the last moment, placing the ball at the far post.

Argentina was up by two with 30 minutes left and it seemed that the team was heading towards a comfortable victory. The second ever World Cup finals win in the history of the national team was closer than ever. The players just needed to hold on.

But Germany would score the 1-2 at the 74’ and tied up the game at 2 at the 82’.

Fortunately, Argentina’s desperation didn’t last long as three minutes after Germans drew level, Jorge Burruchaga scored Argentina’s winning goal, following a memorable run.

Argentina’s captain and legend, Diego Maradona, lifted the trophy with immense joy. Argentina’s center-back during that tournament, Oscar Ruggeri, told many times afterwards that it was impossible to take the trophy from Maradona’s hands as he was carrying it all along the fly back to Argentina.

Oscar Ruggeri, today working on the Argentine TV, recently affirmed that the players and coaching staff from that historic team are in a Whatsapp group called “Champions 86”, where they are all still in touch.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni: “We had to win”

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke to the press following the team’s 4-1 win vs. Bolivia at the Copa America.

Lionel Scaloni saw his team win three and draw on in the group stage as they qualified for the quarter finals as group winners. In regards to the match, here’s what Scaloni had to say:

“The idea was to create a lot of goal scoring opportunities, even if the pitch conditions were not ideal. The players understood the message, we had to win and I liked the team’s attitude.”

Scaloni also spoke about his Argentina team:

“The balance is positive: We played against strong rivals and we faced matches in the best way. We believe that a lot of the players who had played very little minutes deserved this opportunity.

“Everyone showed that they can be in the team but only 11 play at a time. A lot of players are at a good level. The team was always the protagonist. There are times where you could be tired and show something else, you can’t dominate for 90 minutes. It’s logical that there are things to improve but we are satisfied.”

In regards to Ecuador who Argentina will face on Saturday:

“We have the utmost respect for Ecuador, they have shown to be a good team, young and dynamic.”

Lionel Messi scores twice in 4-1 Argentina win vs. Bolivia at Copa America

Lionel Messi scored twice for Argentina in their 4-1 win vs. Bolivia.

It was the Lionel Messi show as he had two goals and one assists in a changed looking Argentina starting eleven. The first half saw three goals with the first one coming from Papu Gomez.

Angel Correa receive the ball and drove towards the middle playing a pass onto Messi. He would play a chip over the Bolivian back line onto Papu Gomez who would strike the ball to give Argentina the 1-0 lead.

Papu Gomez would play a role in the second goal as he was tripped up inside the penalty area and the referee would award a penalty kick. Up stepped Messi and he would score as he placed the ball to the side of the net.

Messi wasn’t done just yet. Sergio Aguero would play a dink pass and Messi would time his run perfectly and a first time finish by Messi as he would chip the goalkeeper for his second, Argentina’s third of the match. He has now scored 75 goals and is the most capped player ever for Argentina on 148 matches

The second half would see Bolivia pull one back as Lisandro Martinez over committed and was caught out of position. A low pass into the penalty area and the strike would beat Franco Armani.

Lautaro Martinez would replace Sergio Aguero in the second half and find the back of the net. Messi would start the play as he would pass the ball wide to Acuna. His pass into the penalty area would find Julian Alvarez as his effort was blocked. The loose ball would fall to Lautaro and he would score from close range to give Argentina the 4-1 lead.

Lionel Scaloni would make several changes. The first one saw Julian Alvarez on for Papu Gomez early in the second half. After that was a double substitution as Lautaro Martinez was brought on for Aguero and Gio Lo Celso for Angel Correa. Scaloni would make two more, five in total as Leandro Paredes was substituted on for Guido Rodriguez and Nicolas Dominguez for Exequiel Palacios.

Argentina top their first and will play Ecuador on Saturday in one of the quarter finals of the Copa America.
