Guido Rodriguez scores winner for Argentina vs. Uruguay at Copa America

Guido Rodriguez scored the only goal of the match in Argentina’s 1-0 win vs. Uruguay.

Argentina have broken their run of three consecutive draws with a win against their eternal rivals. This was Uruguay’s first match of the Copa America and are well rested, as opposed to Argentina who played on Monday.

Rodriguez, who was not even supposed to be starting for Argentina, replaced Leandro Paredes in the eleven and showed his worth. A cross into the penalty area by Lionel Messi found Rodriguez who headed the ball onto the post and into the net.

Lionel Scaloni made two changes early in the second half. Joaquin Correa came on for Lautaro Martinez, who once more looked out of form. The second change was Exequiel Palacios for Gio Lo Celso. The team kept their shape and kept Uruguay at bay with Uruguay getting close to scoring once, as a cross was sent into the penalty area but it missed everyone.

Angel Di Maria was brought in for Nicolas Gonzalez who put in a solid effort, making runs and attacking the Uruguayan back line. Lionel Messi had the ball inside the penalty area a few times but his efforts were blocked.

The final change was German Pezzella for Rodrigo De Paul as Argentina held on to the 1-0 win.

It was a solid showing by Lionel Scaloni’s team as Uruguay had zero shots on target and three efforts off target.

Argentina will line-up vs. Uruguay in a 4-3-3 with three changes from the team that started the first Copa America match.

Lionel Scaloni has made three changes from the last match as Nahuel Molina replaces Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero replaces for Lucas Martinez Quarta and Guido Rodriguez for Leandro Paredes. Molina replaces Montiel which means he will be able to link-up with Udinese team mate Rodrigo De Paul.

Cristian Romero is back following a muscle strain and replaces Martinez Quarta, who did not have a particularly good match. Guido Rodriguez is in for Leandro Paredes who is suffering from a knock to his ribs. Here is the starting XI:

Emiliano Martínez; Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Otamendi, Marcos Acuña; De Paul, Guido Rodríguez, Lo Celso; Messi, Lautaro Martínez and Nicolás González.

The five players left out of the squad are Lisandro Martínez, Agustin Marchesín, Julián Alvarez, Nicolás Domínguez and Angel Correa.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni does not yet appear to have selected a starting XI for the team’s Copa America clash on Friday.

There are at least four doubts for tonight’s match, including a possible change of formation, this per a report by TyC Sports. In comparison with the starting XI which started vs. Chile, Lisandro Martínez, Cristian Romero, Marcos Acuña, Guido Rodríguez, Exequiel Palacios, and Ángel Di María could be in, while Martínez Quarta, Nicolás Tagliafico, Leandro Paredes, Giovani Lo Celso, and Nicolás González could be out.

In case Scaloni chooses to play with a 4-3-3 formation vs. Uruguay, this would be the lineup:

Following TyC Sports’ report, Marcos Acuña currently has more of a chance to be a starter than Nicolás Tagliafico, while we are almost sure that Guido Rodríguez will begin in the place of injured Leandro Paredes.

Who will start between Nicolás González and Ángel Di María is still uncertain. Even though Fiorentina’s recent signing had a good game in Argentina’s Copa America opener vs. Chile, the experienced PSG player came off the bench and saw a lot of the ball. On the other hand, Giovani Lo Celso appears to have a better chance of starting than Exequiel Palacios.

The reason why there are so many doubts regarding Argentina’s lineup has to do with the fact that coach Lionel Scaloni took the decision, since the beginning of Copa America, to not confirm the starting XI before each game until an hour or two before the kick-off.

Here is what he said during Thursday’s press conference:

“The team is almost confirmed, I will not give it, but it will be similar to the one from the other day (vs. Chile). There will be one or two modifications thinking about the number of matches ahead.”

It looks like there may be a few more changes than the ones Scaloni mentioned yesterday. The Argentina coach got upset when, prior to the last World Cup qualifying match vs. Colombia, the press found out about Argentina’s lineup before he announced it. This is something that has always happened in Argentine football during the last 20 years.

Nicolás González to Fiorentina for €23 million plus bonuses

Despite being very close to joining Brighton, Nicolás González to Fiorentina is reportedly a done deal.

It would be a transfer of €23 million with González agreeing to a 5-year contract. Per a report by Nicolo Schira, González will sign a contract until 2026 where he would be making €2.7 million a year.

The transfer would be €23 million plus four million in bonuses with medicals to be done in the next few days.

Leandro Paredes with pain in his ribs, could be replaced by Guido Rodriguez for Argentina

Leandro Paredes has suffered a knock in his ribs and is a doubt for Argentina vs. Uruguay.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni has something to think about as Leandro Paredes is currently suffering from a knock. Paredes is feeling some pain in his ribs due to an old knock and could be replaced by Guido Rodriguez, this per a report by TyC Sports.

Guido has represented Argentina 10 times with his last match for being in the 2-1 win vs. Bolivia in the South American World Cup qualifiers last year where he replaced Paredes.

As we reported earlier, Cristian Romero will be replacing Lucas Martinez Quarta in the eleven vs. Uruguay while Nicolas Gonzalez is a doubt for the match.
