Argentina, Barcelona legend Javier Mascherano retires from football

16

Argentina and Barcelona legend Javier Mascherano has called an end to a magnificent career.

Javier Mascherano was one of a dying breed. One that would give it his all in every match, not matter the shirt he was wearing, no matter the opponent. The last true warrior. He may not have been the most talented on the ball, but his intelligence on the pitch along with the heart and desire he brought was unparalleled.

Making his Argentina national team debut prior to making his senior River Plate debut, the 36 year old would go on to play 146 times for his country. For the Olympic team, Mascherano was selected twice, the first coming in 2004 and the second in 2008 four years later. The outcome was Argentina winning gold twice and Mascherano becoming the first Argentine athlete to win gold at two separate Olympic games.

With the senior side, he may not have scored many goals but his participation on the pitch ensured that Argentina would go far in tournaments. The heart beat of the Argentina national team for over a decade, the would truly leave it all on the pitch. The best seven matches of his entire career came in 2014 at the World Cup. Those four weeks in Brazil defined what Mascherano was for Argentina. A leader. Not that there was any doubt about it.

From keeping the midfield afloat in the group stages, to the iconic picture of himself standing in front of two much larger Belgium players, Mascherano proved it wasn’t the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog which mattered.

Arguably Mascherano’s most famous match with his country came in the semi finals of the 2014 World Cup vs. the Netherlands. He would be knocked out, dazed but it wouldn’t phase him. He would continue to play and in a last second tackle, the legendary number 14 would extend a foot in and block Arjen Robben’s shot, taking it out for a corner kick. Not only did he block what looked to be a goal but he also tore his anus.

But the heroics weren’t done yet. It was Lionel Messi wearing the captain’s armband but that wouldn’t stop Mascherano from motiving his team. The match was going to penalty kicks and he took goalkeeper Sergio Romero aside. His words of advice?

“Today, you become a hero.”

And he was right. Romero would go on to save two penalty kicks as Argentina were off to the World Cup final. No less than they had deserved.

Despite Argentina not winning that final and subsequently making two more Copa America finals and destiny not being in their favor, Mascherano’s influence on the team would continue to show. He would play his last match for his country at the 2018 World Cup vs. eventual winners France as he would call it quits after the final whistle.

Winning a total of 21 major trophies through his illustrious career, Mascherano’s legacy and impact on the teams he played for cannot be counted by numbers. Not by the amount of trophies won, or the amount of tackles put in. You can’t put leadership into numbers. And that’s what he was. A leader. Diego Maradona once famously said his team was “Mascherano and 10 others”. Some laughed and questioned Maradona’s sanitiy when he used that phrase. However, looking back, one can’t say he was fully wrong.

A career spanning 17 years at the biggest clubs in the world. River Plate, Corinthians, a short stint at West Ham, Liverpool and Barcelona, Mascherano had been there and done that at club level. He did it all. From la liga titles, to Champions League medals, even a treble, he has the credentials to prove it all. A stint at Hebei China Fortune saw him join Estudiantes where he would end his career.

Mascherano truly was one of the greats. Thank you for everything.

Nicolas Tagliafico set to return, Argentina possible eleven

Nicolas Tagliafico, who missed Argentina’s 1-1 draw vs. Paraguay is set to return to the team’s eleven vs. Peru in the World Cup qualifier.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni recover some good news as the left back is set to get the green light and return to the team. The 28 year old missed the World Cup qualifier vs. Paraguay due to foot injury in his left foot.

The entire Argentina squad also tested negative for COVID ahead of the game vs. Peru. Per a report by TyC Sports, should Tagliafico be back in the eleven, it wouldn’t mean that Nicolas Gonzalez would be out. The Stuttgart man impressed and could find himself started ahead of Lucas Ocampos up front. Per the report, here is the rumored eleven vs. Peru in the World Cup qualifier on Tuesday:

Armani; Montiel, Quarta, Otamendi, Tagliafico; de Paul, Paredes, Lo Celso; Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Ocampos or Nicolas Gonzalez

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni talks about 1-1 draw, VAR, more

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about his team’s 1-1 draw vs. Paraguay in the World Cup qualifiers.

It was Nicolas Gonzalez who scored Argentina’s only goal of that match as Lionel Messi had his ruled off by VAR due to a foul. Scaloni spoke at a press conference after the match. Here’s what he had to say:

“The team didn’t start off well in the first 15 minutes. After the penalty, I think it was all us, honestly. The team reacted, created chances, they did what they had to do. We achieved the draw. The second half was all us and looking passed that we didn’t win, we have to value a lot what we did well.”

Regarding the foul on Exequiel Palacios:

“We are left without a player for several days or months, the knock was there and VAR didn’t review it. Balbuena was inside the area for the Paraguay penalty. There were a lot of passes before the disallowed goal.

“No one likes football like that. I believe that they have to look for a way to unify the issue with VAR. I’m not saying good or bad, just that to clarify the criterias.”

Lionel Scaloni also spoke about Nicolas Gonzalez:

“We always had the option of Nicolas Gonzalez in mind, we believed he could fill that spot. It’s great joy for him. I’m happy that he played the way he did.”

Scaloni commented on not winning:

“We’re leaving with a bittersweet taste because Argentina did everything to win. In the second half, we pushed the opponents back. We have to value the attitude of the team, that always believed in the win.”

Argentina draw 1-1 vs. Paraguay as Lionel Messi goal is disallowed

Argentina were able to get a draw as Nicolas Gonzalez scored while Lionel Messi had a goal disallowed.

Lionel Scaloni’s team did not have the best first half as Paraguay were controlling the ball. A penalty meant it was 1-0 for Paraguay. Exequiel Palacios had to be substituted off in the first half following double knees to the back. His substitute Gio Lo Celso came on and instantly had a good impact.

It was an Argentina corner kick as Gio Lo Celso took it. His cross found Nicolas Gonzalez who would head the ball to draw Argentina level. The first half would end in a draw.

The second half saw Argentina much more in control. Lo Celso looked to have had his second assist of the match as he played a cut back to Lionel Messi who scored. The team would celebrate but the referee would go to VAR and disallow it as there appeared to have been a found 12 passes prior to the goal.

Lionel Messi would come close to giving Argentina the lead through a free kick which hit the post. Scaloni would make three more substitutions as Angel Di Maria would come on for Lucas Ocampos, Rodrigo de Paul off for Lucas Alario and Nicolas Dominguez on for Lautaro Martinez.

Following the 1-1 draw, Argentina are now on seven points after three matches with the next one against Peru in a few days.

Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Lucas Ocampos start for Argentina

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni has his starting eleven with a change at left back.

As we reported earlier, Nicolas Tagliafico was a doubt for the match and he will not be starting. Instead, it’s Nicolás González who will replace him, despite being a forward. Here’s the starting eleven:

Franco Armani; Gonzalo Montiel, Lucas Martínez Quarta, Nicolás Otamendi, Nicolás González; Rodrigo de Paul, Leandro Paredes, Exequiel Palacios; Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez and Lucas Ocampos.

The formation could also mean a back three and a midfield of four with Messi, Lautaro and Ocampos up front. The three players who did not make the bench are Agustín Marchesín, Leonardo Balerdi and Lisandro Martinez.
