Speaking in an interview with 90 Minutos de Fútbol, here’s what the Argentine had to say about Scaloni:

“Us, who are part of the generational change, we’re hand in hand with him. He is very lose to us and very open, if you want to ask him something, he has no problems.”

Paredes also spoke about his place in the team:

“I’m confident in my position and the coach too. That’s what is important. The rest can think what they want.”

Regarding the team:

“There’s a very nice group being put together with very good people and incredible players. It’s important for any national team to be that united.”

On this day in 1999, Gabriel Batistuta scores thunderous goal for Fiorentina vs. Arsenal

7

Gabriel Batistuta was known for his rocket like shots and on October 27, 1999, the Argentine lit up the old Wembley.

Batistuta was among the best number 9s to ever grace a football pitch. For Argentina, he was by far and large the best of his generation and no one has matched him since. Spending much of his career with Fiorentina, Batistuta scored many memorable goals. One of which happened on this day 21 years ago.

It was a Champions League match involving Fiorentina and Arsenal, a group B match with Fiorentina winning 1-0 and knocking Arsenal out. With the score at 0-0, Batistuta would receive the ball right on the edge of the penalty area. A drag forward with his left foot, acceleration from the Argentine and goal with his right foot. A thunderous shot would give Fiorentina the 1-0 lead and the winner.

Diego Maradona: “I want to score with my right hand vs. England”

Diego Maradona, who turns 60 years of age on Friday, mentioned that he would like to score one more goal vs. England.

Maradona, regarded by many as the greatest to ever grace a football pitch, turns 60 in a few days and he recently sat down with France Football for an interview. Speaking with the publication, Maradona commented on a few things and also revealed his birthday wish. Here’s what he had to say:

“I dream of scoring another goal against England but with my right hand.”

In a tongue in cheek comment, Maradona was obviously referring to his Hand of God goal which he scored against England at the 1986 World Cup. He also commented on a potential move to Marseille:

“Those in charge of Marseille were in contact with me and offered to double my salary. I was playing at Napoli and president Ferlaino told me that if we were to win the UEFA Cup, he would let me go.

Bernard Tapie (president of Marseille at the time) and Michel Hidalgo (his sporting manager) even came to see me in Italy to make an offer and for us to discuss it together. Once I returned to Naples (the meeting took place in Milan), I said to Ferlaino:”

“Thank you president for all the beautiful years, I’m leaving.”

“At that moment, he started to play dumb as if he didn’t understand and he backed off. End of story.”
