Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni: “We can’t think Lionel Messi will win us a match”

3

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni gave an interview with Ole where he discussed the team having Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.

The first, second and third parts of the interview have already been translated and you can read them by clicking the links at the end of the article. In this part, Scaloni speaks about how it’s a team game and an individual cannot win you a match. Here’s what he had to say:

Despite having Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, the team isn’t among the top five in the world. But at the same time, it’s a learning process:

“I understand. But beyond the names, the two you just mentioned, more than any other time, now more than ever, football is a team sport. It always has been, it always will be, my entire life, I have always had that concept since I started playing but now more than ever.

“Today, there’s no way for one player to win you a match, there’s no way. Not even Leo can win you a match on his own but we know that if it was possible, he would. But we can’t go out on the pitch thinking that because we have him, he will win us a match.

“That, just to start off. For me France, who are world champions, everyone knows what they have to do. It’s why they won the World Cup. We have to achieve that and I think we are on the right track. Now if we were to start talking about individuals, that’s where we would be mistaken. That is the problem.

Scaloni was asked about how he has always said it’s about the team:

“When I played, I was always a team player who believe a lot in the group. I still believe that a good group will beat the best individuals. I think it and that’s why I always reaffirm it. And even having the best, the one who will help us win a match is the team. I continue to think that we have to put together a group. I think our biggest problem is thinking that any player of our can individually win a match.

“Thank God they understood that. From the first to the last player I have and they are aware of it. The players who play at that level know that today in football, it’s decided by details. A player could be substituted in with five minutes left and decide a match and 30 minutes before he was on the bench with no clue what was going to happen. And if that player is on the bench, he knows he can be important, that he can support the group. It’s what we are trying to transmit to the players. For us, they’re all important.”

When asked about how in the past if Sergio Aguero didn’t play for Argentina, it would have been a catastrophe:

“We are sincere, we call the players and explain to them. We don’t explain the way, we tell them the idea we have in mind and from there the player can react whichever way they want. In this case, the reaction was all positive on the part of both players (Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, when both were absent from the team). The players senses it, feels it and needs to know that he is being told the truth. There’s no doubt. When told the truth, it will hurt the second you say it but in one hour, it will hurt less and after that less.”

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni talks having Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, more when starting

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni gave an interview with Ole where he discussed what and how much has changed from his first day in charge until now.

The first and second parts of the interview have already been translated and you can read them by clicking the links at the end of the article. In this part, Scaloni speaks about what has changed from the first day to the present. Here’s what he had to say:

It’s a process of 21 games and if he’s comfortable with how the team has changed and grown:

“Yes and from a personal level as well. It’s only logical. The first game is not the same as match number 21. It’s a question of… Now I feel more relaxed, I know who we have, from a coaching staff level to the players, we created a good group. I believe that has made me more calm.

“It’s logical that there are things to improve but in terms of where we are right now, I am satisfied.”

If it appeared impossible two years ago to have a new base of Argentina national team players. If that’s what he was looking for:

“What I was really looking for was to be able to count on the older players who could play wearing the Argentina shirt. The names of Di Maria, Aguero, Messi, Otamendi, Romero, Tagliafico, they were players I knew, for the people they were players they knew and we needed to add people.

“I believe what we did, any coaching staff could have been able to do. Because it was something which was almost an obligation to do. It was a generation thing, there were players that had stated they did not want to continue. The other point is that there were young players that had been working. I think that in a way, yes, it’s true that it was an important change.”

Lionel Scaloni comments on how he became Argentina national team coach

3

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni gave a lengthy interview with Ole where he discussed a number of topics.

The first part of the interview has already been translated and you can read it by click here, where Scaloni discusses the past year and the upcoming year. In the other part of the interview, Scaloni was asked about his journey and how he became coach. Here’s what he had to say:

If he ever dreamed of being where he’s at now:

“If I remember correctly, when I started training the 14 year old players at Mallorca, I can’t remember if it was to my father or my mother but I told them: “How beautiful would it be to train the Argentina U20 team.” I would have liked it because I didn’t play with the U17 team but I did play in the U20 team and for me it was the best national team I saw. A spectacular category and it was an ideal age to make the jump.

“I said it back in 2015-2016 when I had just stopped playing. I ended up staying to coach the Argentina U20 team and then they gave me the chance for six months to continue as interim, which is something they never do. But for me, the Argentina U20 was an unattainable goal, something spectacular.

“Because for me, it’s a beautiful age group. It’s a privilege to coach those boys. The senior team is an objective I imagined a lot about, the highest goal and I started there.”

Scaloni was asked about how it was mentioned after the 2018 World Cup that he would become coach:

“When we travelled to L’Alcudia (for the U20 tournament), we got there and I was with Pablo (Aimar) and Martin (Tocalli). They called me from the AFA and asked if I would accept to manage two games. Initially because after two months, it would give them time to talk with… Pablo and I looked at each other and he told me: “I don’t know what to tell you. If you go, I’m going with you.”

“And that’s how it started, it was impossible. To think that I knew about it would be crazy. When I had the chance to stay with the Argentina U20 team where I still didn’t know if I would continue or not, if Sampaoli was leaving, if in the end they would give it to me, for me, coaching the Argentina U20 team was a reward. A spectacular age group.”

If after the two games, if he could have imagined everything that would have happened:

“When we finished the game vs. Mexico in Mendoza, we said our goodbyes to the guys. We didn’t think further than that, everything was said and done. Coaching the Argentina U20 team was a reward. Coaching the Argentina national team for six months was another reward. It was done there and the work we had done was for whoever was going to come next. For us, it was done, until that moment, we knew nothing. It was later given and welcomed.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni: “We can compete against anyone”

2

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni gave an interview with Ole where he discussed the team and where they stand going into the new year.

Lionel Scaloni is already preparing for 2020 but he also reflected on the past year. Speaking with Ole, here’s what he had to say:

“We started the year, after the games vs. Venezuela and Morocco before the Copa America, we we had a few doubts. We knew that we were doing things well but that we needed something more and at the Copa, the start wasn’t good. But we were always confident in what we had, that there was a way to get out of it.

“I think the best version was what we saw in the quarter finals, the semi finals and the third place match at the Copa America. And from there, the team started to understand the system. A lot more comfortable, with players that now felt like national team players and we finished the year in a good way.

“And on the other hand, I believe it’s logical that with players that still had not played many matches with the Argentina national team. But now, yes, we can say we have a good base.”

Where do we stand, going into 2020?

“Competing, we can compete against anyone. I have no doubt that today, Argentina and for the past two years, could compete against anyone. But from there to think that we can become world champion or winning a Copa America is easy, I believe that would be a mistake. It would be a mistake because I think it would be selling an idea that isn’t logical.

“To promise that right now is very difficult, especially in South America where I believe the World Cup qualifiers are the most difficult in the world. But yes, it’s normal to dream about the Copa in our country and in the qualifiers for us to be a difficult team to beat.

“We can’t promise more. Promising more would be reckless, it wouldn’t follow the path we have set. The truth is that we are a difficult national team to beat, we are an important national team but we can’t say that we can beat anyone.”

Angel Correa scores, assists for Atletico Madrid in win vs. Real Betis

Angel Correa scored and assisted for Atletico Madrid in their 2-1 win vs. Real Betis.

A substitute for Atletico Madrid, Correa scored at the start of the second half. He would steal the ball off the Betis defender, dribble around the goalkeeper and score into an open net. He would play a part in the second goal as he would provide the assist for the game winner.

Correa is often used as a substitute for Diego Simeone and since 2015-2016, he has scored 13 league goals since coming off the bench. No player has scored more.
