Gonzalo Montiel joins Argentina team, Aguero, Foyth missing

Gonzalo Montiel has joined the Argentina national team as the squad continues to train in preparation of the World Cup qualifiers.

Montiel is the latest to join Lionel Scaloni’s team following a PCR test for COVID. The River Plate right back  received the medical green light on Thursday after having caught COVID, as he was one of over a dozen River players who was hit with the virus.

There are only two players which haven’t joined the Argentina team yet. Sergio Aguero and Juan Foyth, both of which are involved in European cup finals will be the last to join. Foyth, who won the Europa League with Villarreal, who will join on early Saturday. The right back position for Argentina vs. Chile on June 3 appears to be between Montiel and Foyth.

Sergio Aguero will be the last one to join the team as Manchester City are involved in the Champions League final on Saturday.

CONMEBOL allows 28 player squads for Copa America

CONMEBOL announced on Thursday night that coaches will be able to select a squad of 28 players for the Copa America.

An additional five players will be allowed for the Copa America per team, up from the original number of 23 players. Furthermore, coaches can add 10 players to their provisional list of 50, meaning it could go up to a list of 60 players.

The deadline to add the provisional players is the 1st of June.

It was definitely a great performance from the Argentine clubs in CONMEBOL competitions during thie first semester of 2021.

Defensa y Justicia, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Racing Club, Argentinos Juniors, and Vélez Sarsfield all overcame the Copa Libertadores group stage. In the Copa Sudamericana, there was Rosario Central, Independiente, Arsenal de Sarandí, and Lanus which finished among the best in their respective groups and moved on to the next round.

There were three Argentine clubs which didn’t make it to the next round in the Copa Sudamericana. San Lorenzo, Newell’s Old Boys, and Talleres de Córdoba finished 3rd in their groups and were eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana.

Both CONMEBOL tournaments will resume with their final stages in mid-July, after the Copa
America, and will have their round of 16 draws next Tuesday. The teams that finished first in
each group will be matched up with the ones that finished second.

Argentina presents a “strict protocol” to CONMEBOL to host 2021 Copa America

Argentine President Alberto Fernández presented to CONMEBOL a “strict protocol” to host the 2021 Copa America 2021. The proposal was presented during a meeting held on Wednesday afternoon at the Quinta de Olivos, with the president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez.

The tournament is scheduled to run from June 13th to July 10th on Argentine soil. Below is the official statement by CONMEBOL:

“The Argentine government presented a strict protocol to CONMEBOL for the realization of Copa America 2021, to be held in the country. In a meeting that took place at the Quinta de Olivos, the organizational and logistical aspects were evaluated -with the eventual authorization of additional venue’s- and everything concerning the sanitary protocols.”

“The analysis of this CONMEBOL Copa America and its sanitary protocols, so that it can be organized in the country, will remain under the rigorous study of officials of the Ministry of Health of the República Argentina. This was agreed by the President of the República Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and the head of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez.”

With Colombia having already withdrawn as one of the two hosts due to several social conflicts in the country, and Argentina immersed in a sanitary crisis because of COVID-19, CONMEBOL is seriously considering moving next month’s Copa America to the United States. All of them will begin to be inquired by the Argentine justice from next Monday, and none of them will be able to leave the country during the process. Per the report, the people responsible violated their duties and responsibilities. This led to a fatal outcome which could have been avoided.
