16

Atlético Madrid defeated Valladolid 2-1 with Ángel Correa scoring a stunning and very important 11th goal of the season. Diego Simeone, who was emotional after the match, won his 8th title coaching “El Aleti.”

It was the last game of the season and Atlético Madrid knew they depended on themselves. With their competitors Real Madrid playing against Villareal simultaneously, and losing 0-1, Simeone’s team knew they had the cup in their hands. What looked to be an advantage was that they were playing against the last placed team in the standings. However, Atlético Madrid found themselves losing 0-1 in the first half.

Ángel Correa was a key player in his team’s comeback as he equalized for Atletico in the second half, following a fantastic individual play. The Argentine has become an important player for Atlético de Madrid, the club where he has been at since 2015. National team coach Lionel Scaloni has included him in the Argentina squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

Diego Simeone was probably the happiest man on earth after the final whistle. Or at least that is how he showed himself. In the post-match interview, this is what he had to say:

“The first thing that comes to me is a smile. It is a joy that comes from inside me.”

“Before the game, I was remembering when the Atlético fans asked me whether I was staying or leaving. I told them that I was going to stay because I believed in the future of the club, and I was not wrong.”

There are few tougher tasks in professional football than competing against Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. “El Cholo” took Atlético Madrid to an unparalleled level by turning the historic dual rivalry into a triple competition. Here are Simeone’s list of trophies with Atletico:

2 La Liga (2014, 2021)
2 UEFA Europa League (2012, 2018)
2 UEFA Super Cup (2012, 2018)
1 Spain Super Cup (2014)
1 Copa del Rey (2013)

Argentine government stops local football, Copa America not at risk

The Argentine Football Association and the Liga Profesional accepted the new measures from National President Alberto Fernández, who decided to suspend local football until May 30 because of the number of deaths that continues to rise due to Covid. Even though there’s been no official talk regarding the Copa America being played in Argentina in less than a month, the tournament would be played, for now.

This decision will freeze the semifinals of the Copa de la Liga, with matches supposed to be played this weekend, in addition to all the other local divisions and the youth categories. Independiente was going to face Colon this Saturday, and Boca Juniors would have played against Racing Club this Sunday. However, international competitions such as the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana would be played normally, even those games played on Argentine soil.

Latin America is going through an extremely difficult time. Social and economic problems have become worse in most of the countries due to the Pandemic and political decisions. It is definitely not the best context for a Copa America to be held, but the desire of the fans is still there.

Colombia no longer Copa America hosts, Argentina as possible solo hosts

Argentina could be the only hosts for the Copa America when it begins next month as Colombia will no longer be co-hosting.

It was announced on Thursday evening by conmebol that Colombia will not be hosting and that in the next few days, we will know where the matches will be played. For the moment, there are strong rumors that Argentina could host the tournament all alone but there are rumors that it could still be co-hosted.

Three additional stadiums in Argentina are being rumored to be added, should the entirety of it be played in Argentina. Per a report by TyC Sports, the three stadiums being la Bombonera, the Libertadores de America and the Bicentenario.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni comments on Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Sergio Aguero

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about Lionel Messi being part of the Argentina team, Paulo Dybala’s exclusion from next month’s World Cup qualifiers and Sergio Aguero.

Lionel Scaloni made headlines recently when he announced his squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers. Among the names of those included were Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero. However, what was surprising was who was left out and in this case Paulo Dybala.

The Juventus man has not had the best season. Having missed several matches due to injury, Dybala has found it difficult to get playing time. Speaking in an interview with ESPN, here’s what Scaloni had to say regarding Dybala’s exclusion:

“He is a player that we always had and we love but the lockers were almost complete and we had to make a decision. He hasn’t been playing the last few months and his club is going through a few problems with the standings and their game.

“It’s important that he joins us with rhythm, we will always have him in mind. Hopefully he’s able to regain his form and that he can play to be able to decide later on.

“You have to put aside the affection and empathy towards the players to put together a list of 23 players. We have to deal with Dybala, who always responded in the best way possible and put in the effort to play in positions that weren’t his. But the team always comes first.”

Scaloni also commented on star man and team captain Lionel Messi and his role in the team:

“We are excited because we believe that a base was achieved in which everyone understands. Everyone is playing well and it’s important for Leo (Messi) to be able to incorporate well.

“Unfortunately, we don’t see the players often and we can’t enjoy them the way we want. But in the training sessions and in a few parts during the matches, he gives us some joy. But the real joy is what he will give the team.

“He is the first and the most aware that today, you win with the team. He, along with his team mate need each other, the opposite will be very difficult.”

In addition, Scaloni commented on Sergio Aguero and his current situation:

“I spoke with Kun a month and a half ago and the three matches he played were very good. He gave us a good impression, he made us remember the best Aguero. I understand that he is not playing due to a contract situation. His future is being decided and we don’t get involved in that. We would like for him to be able to play before joining us, we saw him as quite fine.

And finally, Scaloni spoke about the possibility of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero playing together at Barcelona next season:

“They know each other by heart, it would be good for them and their friendship but regarding the Argentina national team, they know each other well and by memory. It does not benefit us nor does it harm us.”
