Argentina vs. England – 2005 friendly: Hernan Crespo, Juan Riquelme, Walter Samuel, David Beckham

Argentina vs. England – 2005 friendly, Juan Riquelme, Walter Samuel, David Beckham

Always one to entertain, Argentina vs. England from 2005 was the last time these two countries met in a football match.

There’s the clash in 1966 at the World Cup, the Diego Maradona show in 1986, the World Cup classic in 1998 and tthe not-so-classic sequel four years after that. However, back on November 12, 2005 in Geneva, these two served up a friendly match to remember.

Five goals, a match full of stars and for Argentina, despite being on the losing end, it was a match which showed how dominant they can be. Both teams had qualified for the 2006 World Cup which was coming up the next year and both teams had fielded a very strong squad.

Jose Pekerman managed Argentina with the following line-up:

Roberto Abbondanzieri
Roberto Ayala
Juan Pablo Sorin
Javier Zanetti
Martin Demichelis
Walter Samuel
Maxi Rodriguez
Juan Roman Riquelme
Hernan Crespo
Esteban Cambiasso
Carlos Tevez

Javier Saviola, Fabricio Coloccini, Julio Cruz and Lucho Gonzalez would come on as substitutes.

Of those 15, Javier Zanetti, Martin Demichelis and Walter Samuel would miss out on the big show in Germany a few months later.

The opening 10 minutes saw Walter Samuel completely boss David Beckham off the ball with this challenge.

Argentina would create a lot of chance and it would be Hernan Crespo who would score first and give Argentina the 1-0 lead. Maxi Rodriguez would play a pass into the penalty area which would take a deflection and Crespo with a poacher like finish would score his 29th goal for his country.

Wayne Rooney would equalise five minutes later as it would be 1-1 going into half time.

Argentina would be awarded a free kick in the second half. Up stepped Juan Roman Riquelme as the Villarreal man would send a cross in which would find Demichelis and he would head the ball towards the net but it would be Roberto Ayala who would score to give re-give Argentina the lead.

Juan Roman Riquelme would boss the midfield and dictate the match. From passes to crosses to shielding the ball, this was a vintage Riquelme performance. Riquelme would be substituted off in the 84th minute for Lucho Gonzalez and England would score twice afterwards, with less than 6 minutes left on the clock. A foreshadow of things to come at the World Cup.

Here are the match highlights and the full match.

Oscar Ustari: “Questioning Lionel Messi is outrageous”

48

Oscar UStari gave an interview with Super Mitre Deportivo where he spoke about Lionel Messi.

Ustari won the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2005 and the 2008 Summer Olympic games with the Argentina national team. A team mate of Lionel Messi with both, Ustari has played alongside Messi as well as against him at club level. Speaking in an interview, Ustari had this to say about the Argentina captain:

“Questioning Messi is outrageous.Things may or may not go to plan, but I can tell you that I saw him crying like a baby because of what happened in the national team.

“It’s very difficult to be in his shoes. I remember at the 2011 Copa America when I was recovering from my knee and when lost I went to see him at the Ezeiza estate and saw him as I had never seen him: destroyed.

“I have no doubt that if Messi does not become world champion, football will be unfair.”

Juan Sebastian Veron talks lack of Argentine defenders, Paulo Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, more

24

Juan Sebastian Veron gave an interview with Sky Sport in Italy where he spoke about the lack of Argentine defenders, his career in Italy, Paulo Dybala and Lautaro Martinez.

Veron knows a thing or two about great defenders. Having played with many of them, both with the Argentina national team as well as during his playing career, he now looks for them as president of Estudiantes de La Plata. And according to him, there’s a lack of players who want to be defenders.

“Sadly, the kids, and I see it at the club I’m at when I go to watch players, they all want to play positions of central midfielders and up the pitch. It’s difficult to find good defenders or defensive midfielders.

“I don’t want to say that there aren’t any good Argentine defenders but in the past, there were many of them like Fabian Ayala, Walter Samuel, Gabriel Heinze, Javier Zanetti, Mauricio Pochettino, Diego Simeone.

“Now, there are positions which Argentine kids don’t see. It’s clear that they’ll see a Messi, Aguero, Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez, the youth wants to play in those positions.”

Regarding his club career in Italy, here’s what Veron had to say:

“I was lucky enough to play in Italy. Italian football is very tactical, it helps you to change the way you understand this sport. It’s difficult to say which is the strongest team I played in. Maybe with Lazio, the team I won the Scudetto with. It was unique feeling. I have a link to every team I played in. I’m very attached with the clubs in Italy. I was fortunate enough to write history with those clubs along with my team mates.”

He was also asked about Paulo Dybala and Lautaro Martinez:

“For me, they’re different. Dybala is a player who can not only play as a forward but also as a number 10. Lautaro no. But in the penalty area, he’s a player who hardly fails. They could play together, they could get better.”
