A 3-4-3 for Argentina against Croatia at the World Cup

48

The National Team trained one last time in Bronnitsy ahead of their match against Croatia on Thursday and the plan appears to be a 3-4-3 against Croatia.

There will be several changes in players for the game as Marcos ROJO, Lucas BIGLIA and Angel DI MARIA all come out with a slight chance that Maxi MEZA starts on the bench as well. Per a report by TyC Sports, this will be Argentina’s starting eleven:

CABALLERO; MERCADO, OTAMENDI, TAGLIAFICO; SALVIO, MASCHERANO, MEZA or PEREZ, ACUNA; PAVON, AGUERO, MESSI

The only remaining doubt is that of Maxi MEZA or the veteran Enzo PEREZ in midfield.

Paulo DYBALA on Argentina and Lionel MESSI: “Obviously we can play together”

Paulo DYBALA and Cristian ANSALDI were the two Argentine players who spoke at a press conference on Tuesday.

Two players who didn’t play a single second in Argentina’s opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup spoke to the press about the team, the players and the World Cup. Here’s what DYBALA had to say about him not being in the starting eleven.

“I’ve played in many positions since I started playing football and I always felt comfortable. I’m optimistic. I still haven’t gotten in the starting eleven but I play every training session as if I were in it. I’m always thinking about possibly going on. One has to be prepared.

“I try to leave everything at every training session. If I get asked to come in, I want to be in the best possible shape. I always believed I was doing the right things to be at the World Cup. I think I have the same chances of coming in as my team mates.

“Giving up is impossible. I’m 24 years old and I am living one of the most beautiful moments of my career. One always dreams of scoring in a World Cup. Six years ago I was playing in the second division with Instituto, I am living a different life. Playing or not, I am enjoying it a lot just being here.”

Paulo DYBALA also stated that he and Lionel MESSI can play together.

“MESSI is the first one who wants to change the situation. We’re all here to support here. I believe we are all protagonists in the role that each one has. We have the best player in the owrld and we have to take advantage of that attack in a better way. MESSI has no substitute. Not here, not in any team in the world. Obviously we can play together.”

Criistian Ansaldi also spoke about what we are seeing at the World Cup.

“We are seeing a very even World Cup. All the big teams are having trouble winning. Croatia won’t sit back. It might be a back and forth match. We are calm.

“The World Cup is showing that you can’t underestimate any team. We are always looking to win, that is our objective. Our goal is to always play football, attack and play. Everyone is adapting to the team they play. There doesn’t exist the idea of always playing the same style of football.”

The defender also commented on Lionel MESSI.

“We all know what MESSI represents for our team. He’s not only the best on the pitch but also the best off it. He knows how to deal with all of this.”

ANSALDI also stated that the team is working hard to get a win.

“We are working hard to come back with a win. We are not watching what happens in the other matches. If we want to win the World Cup, we have to beat everyone. In modern football, the defender has to adapt quickly. All coaches have different ways of playing.”

Familiar referee for Argentina vs. Croatia at FIFA World Cup

45

Ravshan IRMATOV has been confirmed as the referee for the Argentina vs. Croatia match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

From Uzbekistan, the 40 year old referee was also in charge of the match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup when Argentina lost 4-0 to Germany. If you’re into superstition, it’s not a good omen for Jorge SAMPAOLI’s men.

In 2008 and 2009, IRMATOV was named as the best Asian referee by the Asian football federation. He has also taken part in the last two FIFA World Cup tournaments in South Africa and Brazil as well as the U20 FIFA World Cup in Canada where Sergio AGUERO lifted the trophy.

Cristian PAVON set to start for Argentina against Croatia

76

The match against Iceland brought nothing but headaches to Jorge SAMPAOLI and his Argentina team and it now appears as though the coach is set to go with a completely different starting eleven on Thursday.

As we reported on Monday, SAMPAOLI is reportedly thinking of changing the line-up against Croatia and if reports are to be believed, Cristian PAVON would certainly be coming in for Angel DI MARIA. Per TyC Sports, here’s the line-up which we could see on Thursday:

CABALLERO; MERCADO, OTAMENDI, TAGLIAFICO; SALVIO, MASCHERANO, MEZA or PEREZ, ACUNA; MESSI, PAVON, AGUERO

On paper, this would be more of a 3-4-3 with SALVIO and ACUNA in midfield acting as potential wingbacks. Gabriel MERCADO would slot in the three man back line in place of Marcos ROJO, it would be one of Maxi MEZA or Enzo PEREZ in midfield and Cristian PAVON comes in for DI MARIA.

Player Ratings for Argentina in 1-1 Tie vs. Iceland

Argentina played to a frustrating 1-1 ties against Iceland on Saturday. A stubborn Icelandic defense was increasingly tough to penetrate, and a Lionel MESSI missed penalty was a huge turning point in the match, because it likely would’ve given Argentina three points.

With a massive match against Croatia looming, Jorge SAMPAOLI’s men must shape up in order to keep their dream alive. Before that happens, let’s revisit how the players performed against Iceland.

Starters

GK Willy CABALLERO

Gave up a tailor-made rebound for Iceland’s goal, nearly another later on and provided no sense of security all match. Franco ARMANI should be starting, but don’t expect a change to be made.

Rating: 4/10

RB Eduardo SALVIO

Naturally, he left way too much space behind him and was out of position whenever Iceland had bodies in the box. Made some marauding, dangerous runs down the right flank. Given that he isn’t a right back, no one should be surprised by his poor defensive performance. One of SAMPAOLI’s experiments that did not necessarily work.

Rating: 5.5/10

CB Nicolas OTAMENDI

Took on Iceland’s aerial attack all by himself, consistently winning the ball in the air. He was great with the ball at his feet and made several passes that broke through Iceland’s defensive lines. Might have been slightly out of position on the rebound goal, but he was a rock in defense for the duration of the match.

Rating: 7.5/10

CB Marcos ROJO

Beaten for a good chance early in the match and then gave away a ball in his own area. Was more assured over the final 80 minutes, actually provided the “assist” on AGUERO’s goal and sprung some counter attacks by getting to the ball first on long passes from Iceland. Federico FAZIO should probably be starting, but against fast teams, FAZIO would get torched; so SAMPAOLI will have to stick with ROJO.

Rating: 5/10

LB Nicolas TAGLIAFICO

Was too reluctant to drive forward with the ball, instead passing backwards often, but had a few fantastic one-twos with MESSI. Also was caught out of position on a couple of counters, but played a solid game overall.

Rating: 6/10

CM Javier MASCHERANO

Showcasing his trademark aggression and bite in midfield, MASCHERANO consistently won the ball back and was a beacon in the defensive midfield for La Albiceleste. Controlled most of the offensive pace for Argentina with his passing, and should continue to start for Argentina going forward due to the team not having a defensive-minded midfielder in their reserves.

Rating: 7/10

CM Lucas BIGLIA

Offered nothing on offense except for five-yard passes, lost the ball countless times and didn’t make more than maybe one lone tackle. A terrible pass of his led to Iceland’s goal. He was a liability and shouldn’t step on the field again for Argentina in this World Cup.

Rating: 2.5/10

LM Angel DI MARIA

Was rather anonymous for his entire 75 minutes on the pitch and Argentina fans were put out of their misery once Cristian PAVON was subbed in for him. Will reportedly lose his place for the match against Croatia, something that has been long overdue given his recent performances with the national team.

Rating: 4/10

RM Maxi MEZA

Was too static when the ball was at his feet, and didn’t make his trademarks runs with the ball because Iceland was always packed tightly in their own half. His jumping ability and aerial prowess won the team a penalty, though, and gives the offense a different dynamic on long through balls.

Rating: 5.5/10

CF Lionel MESSI

Was confronted by multiple Icelandic defenders whenever he received the ball, which frustrated him occasionally. Was still Argentina’s main source of offense, but he could’ve put the game away by burying his penalty kick. Will need to play better–though it seems impossible considering he played very well overall–in order to get three points from Croatia.

Rating: 6.5/10

ST Sergio AGUERO

His goal was a thing of beauty, as he controlled the ball in the box, brought it onto his left foot and drilled his effort into the back of the net. AGUERO consistently held off defenders with his strength and fed short passes to streaking attackers. He was arguably Argentina’s best player and appears to be in for a fantastic World Cup.

Rating: 7.5/10

Substitutes

CM Ever BANEGA

The match changed in Argentina’s favor once BANEGA came in for BIGLIA, as Argentina began passing the ball forward instead of sideways. But BANEGA’s distinctly noticeable lack of pace isn’t enough to disorganize a defense. Despite that, he picked up Argentina’s offensive rhythm and could continue to prove to be a needed offensive substitution off the bench in close games.

Rating: 5.5/10

LM Cristian PAVON

Did more in 15 minutes than DI MARIA has done for the national team over the past few whole years. Provided dynamic pace and attacking bite that this old and slow Argentina side lacked on offense.

Rating: 7/10

ST Gonzalo HIGUAIN

Didn’t play enough to make a real impact.
